Gaming is a healthy hobby for most people. It can provide enjoyment, social connection, learning, distraction from pain, and—in some carefully designed programs—support alongside clinical care. The point at which gaming becomes a health concern is not a universal number of hours. It is the effect on your sleep, physical and psychological health, relationships, school, work, and other responsibilities, together with whether you can choose when to stop.
If play repeatedly causes significant distress, feels beyond your control, or displaces important parts of daily life, consider talking with a qualified health professional. This article explains how to distinguish ordinary enthusiasm from a pattern worth discussing, without diagnosing you or treating games as a substitute for care.
What the evidence says about gaming and mental health
The World Health Organization (WHO) describes video gaming as a healthy hobby for most users. A minority develop a pattern associated with marked distress or impairment, and that functional impact—not enthusiasm by itself—is the central concern. WHO also notes that estimates of “problem gaming,” used as a proxy for gaming-disorder prevalence, vary considerably because studies do not all use standardized assessment tools. Its overview reports a range of 1.3% to 9.9% across populations; this is not a single worldwide rate or an estimate of your personal risk.

The American Psychological Association (APA) says some appropriately designed games can have educational value, mental-health benefits, or a role during therapy. That statement applies to particular games and contexts, not to recreational gaming in general and not to a claim that games treat mental illness. The Mental Health Foundation’s 2022 Mind Gaming report similarly says casual gaming may be linked to improvements in anxiety and low mood, while emphasizing that the relationship is complex. Feeling unwell may also increase the risk of problematic play, so an association does not prove that gaming caused an improvement.

Think of gaming as one activity in a wider life rather than as a treatment. Enjoyment, connection, and recovery time can coexist with good mental health when the activity remains flexible and does not crowd out essentials.
Can video games help with anxiety or low mood?
Possible everyday benefits
A game can offer a manageable goal, a sense of competence, a creative outlet, or contact with friends. Short, intentional play may provide a break after demanding work or study. Casual play has been associated with better anxiety or mood symptoms in some research, but the finding is not a guarantee and does not establish a dose, a particular genre, or a cause-and-effect pathway.
Benefits depend on the pattern around play
Ask what happens before and after a session. If you feel refreshed and return to sleep, meals, movement, relationships, and responsibilities, gaming may be functioning as recreation. If you routinely feel more distressed, stay awake far later than planned, skip obligations, or withdraw from people, the same activity may be part of a worsening pattern. The relevant outcome is your functioning over time, not whether a game is labeled relaxing.

How can video games be used in therapy or health care?
Some commercial games and specially designed programs have been used to inform patients about a condition, teach self-management, distract from chronic pain, or support an official treatment program. In a 2021 WHO/Europe article, David Drummond, assistant professor at Necker Enfants Malades Hospital, University of Paris, explained: “Video games can be used in health care, and they are already used in some official treatment programmes. They can either inform and teach patients how to live with their medical condition or help to distract them.”
He immediately added the boundary that matters for consumers: “But from what is known today, games could work only as part of a broad approach based on more traditional interventions. In other words, games will not replace people in the health sector.” A game you buy or download is not automatically a therapy, and gaming hardware, timers, or accessories do not treat a mental-health condition. Use any game-based intervention only as your clinician or program specifies.
How much gaming is too much?
There is no evidence-backed universal hour limit that determines whether someone needs help. WHO guidance focuses on gaming that excludes other daily activities or coincides with changes in physical or psychological health and social functioning. Two people can play the same number of hours with very different outcomes, and one person’s pattern can change during exams, illness, a new job, or a period of stress.

| You choose when to play and can stop, even if stopping is disappointing. | You repeatedly try to stop or cut back but feel unable to do so. |
| Gaming fits around sleep, meals, movement, relationships, school, and work. | Gaming displaces sleep, self-care, exercise, social contact, study, or paid work. |
| Interest in other activities remains available. | Gaming receives increasing priority over other interests and obligations. |
| A missed plan is occasional and repaired. | You continue or escalate play despite conflict, poor performance, health symptoms, or other negative consequences. |
| Your health and relationships remain broadly stable. | Sleep, mood, physical health, or social functioning is worsening in connection with play. |
This comparison is a prompt for reflection, not a self-diagnosis checklist. A professional considers the duration, severity, context, and other possible causes of a problem.
How can I tell if gaming is affecting my mental or physical health?
Check the areas gaming can displace
- Sleep: delayed bedtimes, short sleep, or daytime exhaustion after trying to fit in “one more” session.
- Physical activity and meals: long sedentary periods, skipped meals, or a less balanced diet.
- Eyes, hearing, and muscles: eye strain, hearing concerns from loud audio, neck or back pain, or hand and wrist discomfort. WHO lists eyesight or hearing problems and musculoskeletal problems as concerns associated with gaming behaviour, not inevitable effects for every player.
- Relationships: repeated arguments, secrecy, or withdrawing from family and friends.
- School or work: missed deadlines, falling performance, lateness, or inability to concentrate after playing.
- Mood and control: marked irritability or distress when unable to play, or continued play despite recognizing harm.
Look for a sustained pattern, not one difficult week
Keep a brief, private record for one or two weeks: when you intend to play, when you actually stop, what was postponed, and how sleep, mood, and relationships felt the next day. The purpose is to notice trends and give a clinician useful information—not to create a pass/fail score. Consider other explanations too, such as depression, anxiety, pain, attention difficulties, medication effects, or a stressful environment.
When should I get help for gaming?
Consider making an appointment with a qualified health professional when gaming repeatedly interferes with sleep, relationships, responsibilities, school, or work; when you feel unable to control it despite negative consequences; or when distress or health changes persist. You do not need to wait for every area of life to be affected. A primary-care clinician, psychologist, psychiatrist, counselor, or another licensed professional can discuss the whole situation, including mood, sleep, substance use, stress, and physical symptoms.

- Describe what is happening in concrete terms. Mention the pattern, how long it has lasted, attempted limits, and specific effects such as missed classes or chronic sleep loss.
- Bring context. Note other symptoms, medicines, medical conditions, major stressors, and whether gaming is your main way of coping.
- Ask for a full assessment. The goal is to understand causes and options, not to assign a label based on hours alone.
- Agree on a practical plan. This might address sleep, routines, social support, treatment for another condition, or safer limits around play.
- Review progress. Revisit the plan if functioning does not improve or if consequences increase.
WHO’s description of gaming disorder centers on marked impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational, or other important functioning and associated psychological distress. APA’s 2024 summary describes the related behavioral features as impaired control, increasing priority given to gaming over other activities, and continuation or escalation despite negative consequences. These are reasons to seek a conversation, not instructions to diagnose yourself.

Small changes can reveal whether your pattern is flexible, but they are not a replacement for care when impairment is significant.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Set a stopping cue before you start: an alarm, the end of a match, or a planned bedtime. Stop at the cue rather than resetting it repeatedly.
- Protect non-negotiables first: sleep, meals, medication, school or work deadlines, movement, and agreed time with other people.
- Keep screens and consoles out of bed if late-night play is shortening sleep.
- Use breaks for water, eye rest, stretching, and a change of posture; reduce volume to a comfortable level.
- Tell a trusted person what limit you are testing and ask them to check in without policing every session.
- Add another enjoyable activity so gaming is not your only reliable way to regulate mood or connect socially.
If a limit repeatedly fails, treat that information as a reason to seek support rather than as a moral failure. A clinician can help identify what the game is doing for you and build alternatives that fit your circumstances.

Risks that deserve wider attention
WHO/Europe’s Kremlin Wickramasinghe has noted risks ranging from concealed advertising for unhealthy products inside gameplay to effects on sedentary lifestyles and mental health. These concerns vary by game, platform, age, and exposure; they do not mean every player will experience harm. Check privacy, spending, chat, and advertising settings, especially for children and teenagers, and involve a caregiver or clinician when symptoms or functioning change.
What the evidence cannot yet tell us
Current sources do not establish a causal effect size for ordinary recreational gaming on mental health, a safe number of hours for everyone, or a particular game that treats a disorder. WHO calls for better international research and sound assessment instruments, and the 2022 Mind Gaming report is not a current clinical guideline. WHO/Europe’s 2021 treatment discussion illustrates possible uses and limits rather than proving that a specific title works for a specific condition. APA’s 2024 feature is a synthesis and reported article; its cited findings should be read in their original study contexts.
If you are in immediate danger or having thoughts of self-harm, contact local emergency services or a crisis service available in your country now, or go to the nearest emergency department. Gaming should never delay urgent help.
