Epic Games announced the Small Shield Potion, commonly called a Mini Shield, for Fortnite Battle Royale on December 19, 2017. At introduction, each potion restored 25 shield, but a player could not use it to go above 50 shield. Epic’s announcement documents the item’s original Battle Royale mechanics; later Creative documentation describes its use in that mode, but does not establish whether it is currently in Battle Royale’s loot pool.
When were Mini Shields added to Fortnite?
Epic announced the Small Shield Potion for Battle Royale on December 19, 2017, describing it as an item “for the survivor on the go.” The announcement is the earliest dated evidence in the official sources covered here that the item was introduced. Epic Games’ Small Shield Potion Update
Battle Royale had entered public testing earlier: Epic’s September 12, 2017 v1.6 notes announced the public test and said the mode was planned to become officially available on September 26. Those notes do not mention the Small Shield Potion, so they provide context about the mode’s early period—not evidence that Mini Shields were available then. What were the Mini Shield’s original Battle Royale mechanics?
Epic’s December 2017 announcement specified the following launch details:

- Stacking: drops came in stacks of three, and the maximum stack size was ten.
These are the specifications Epic published at introduction. They should be read as historical launch rules, not assumed to describe every later version of Battle Royale.
What does Epic’s Creative documentation say?
Epic’s Fortnite Creative documentation lists the Small Shield Potion as restoring 25 points, filling the shield bar only up to 50, and having a two-second delay before its effect applies to a player. Those details support an explanation of the potion in Creative. They do not verify its current availability, rarity, or loot sources in Battle Royale, which has its own mode-specific item pool.

How complete is the documented Mini Shield timeline?
The official material establishes a clear introduction date and original Battle Royale specifications, plus later-accessed Creative documentation describing the item’s effect. It does not provide a complete, item-specific record of subsequent Battle Royale balance changes, vaulting, returns, or present-day loot-pool status. A full version-by-version chronology—or a claim about current availability—cannot be established from these sources alone.
