No: not every spacecraft needs every component to be space-grade. Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) parts can be appropriate when their capabilities and supporting evidence fit the mission. The decision depends on the operating environment, mission lifetime, performance needs, consequences of failure, and the verification the project can support—not on a label alone.

What does “space-grade” mean in practice?

“Space-grade” is often used as shorthand for components designed, screened, or qualified for demanding space applications. It is not, by itself, proof that a component suits a particular spacecraft. A part still has to meet the project’s requirements for temperature, radiation exposure, lifetime, performance, and reliability, with evidence appropriate to the risks.

Likewise, “COTS” describes a commercial sourcing and product context; it does not automatically mean unsuitable—or suitable—for space. NASA’s 2022 guidance says properly selected COTS can offer performance and availability advantages, but selection should account for evidence of quality and reliability, manufacturer information, datasheet limits, and mission-appropriate verification. NASA’s Phase II report provides recommendations for NASA missions rather than blanket approval of commercial components.

How should mission risk shape the choice?

NASA’s recommendations vary by mission risk class. These are recommendations in its 2022 report, not a universal rule for every space program.

  • IMPRESSIVE 28" DISPLAY CENTERPIECE - Standing nearly 28 inches tall, this model delivers a striking vertical display that commands attention in any room, office, or collection.
  • SKILL LEVEL 4 – ADVANCED BUILD EXPERIENCE - Designed for experienced hobbyists ages 12+ seeking a challenging, rewarding project with intricate parts and detailed assembly.
  • READY FOR CUSTOM PAINT FINISH - Molded in light gray plastic so you can paint and detail to your exact preferences for a museum-quality appearance. (Paint & glue required, not included.)
  • Classes A and B, and human-rated missions: Consider a design based on MIL-SPEC parts. The report allows established COTS parts to be considered when equivalent MIL-SPEC parts do not meet functional, size, weight, power, or performance needs, or are unavailable.
  • Class C: Choose among MIL-SPEC parts, COTS, or a combination based on the mission’s needs and risks.
  • Classes D and Sub-D: NASA recommends considering a System of COTS approach.

Risk class changes the assurance posture; it does not replace an assessment of the particular part and its role. The same component may call for different verification effort on missions with different risk tolerances.

Which factors matter more than the label?

Evaluate the component in the context of the spacecraft and mission. A part that meets its datasheet limits on paper may still need further evidence or mitigation if failure would be difficult to detect or costly to the mission.

  • PERFECT GIFT & DISPLAY PIECE - A great gift for Star Trek fans, collectors, and sci-fi enthusiasts, creating a display-worthy model once completed.
  • Environment: Check expected temperature conditions and radiation exposure, including whether the component’s documented limits match the actual mission.
  • Lifetime and performance: Compare the mission duration and required function with the part’s specifications and available reliability evidence.
  • Failure consequences: Consider the component’s role, the mission’s risk classification, whether the mission is human-rated, and the consequences if the part fails.
  • System design: Account for redundancy, fault mitigation, and verification at the component, board, and spacecraft levels.
  • Supply and fit: Weigh availability, manufacturer and lot information, and functional needs against size, weight, power, and performance constraints.
  • Assurance capacity: Decide whether the project has the resources and expertise to evaluate evidence, conduct needed screening or verification, and manage residual risk.

NASA’s Small Spacecraft Systems guidance notes that low Earth orbit (LEO) microsatellites and CubeSats often face more favorable thermal and radiation conditions than deep-space missions and commonly use COTS where risk permits. Orbit and spacecraft size are context, not a substitute for component- and mission-specific requirements.

Why a NASA listing or qualification label is not enough

NASA’s Parts Selection List (NPSL) provides product-assurance reference levels; it is not a project-approved parts list. A listing does not guarantee radiation hardness unless that individual listing specifically says so. The project must still determine whether the part meets its own requirements, involving radiation-assurance experts when applicable.

More broadly, neither a listing nor a “space-qualified” description establishes that a part is suitable for every orbit, mission duration, or consequence of failure. Check the specific item, its evidence, and the project’s approval requirements.

What is the practical decision process?

  1. Set mission requirements: Define the environment, lifetime, performance, reliability, and risk posture for the component’s intended role.
  2. Compare candidate parts: Review datasheet limits, manufacturer information, lot evidence, availability, and fit against functional, size, weight, and power constraints.
  3. Identify evidence gaps: Determine what is known about quality, reliability, and radiation behavior, and what must be established through screening or verification.
  4. Plan assurance and mitigation: Set verification at part, board, and system levels, and decide how redundancy or fault mitigation addresses credible failures.
  5. Approve residual risk: Document the remaining risks and confirm that the project’s responsible engineering and assurance authorities accept them.

The point is not to choose the least expensive or most rigorously qualified part by default. It is to match the part’s demonstrated capabilities and the project’s assurance effort to the mission’s needs and the consequences of getting the decision wrong.

What standards context should buyers and engineers know?

ISO/FDIS 25286 was shown by ISO as a Final Draft International Standard in the approval phase and under development at the time of the cited status. Its stated scope is quality-assurance requirements for COTS electrical, electronic, and electromechanical (EEE) components used in space applications. It should be treated as a draft under development, not as a published, in-force standard. ISO’s page for ISO/FDIS 25286 is the place to check its status.
