Lightcloud says it is building ICE, an infrastructure tool, as a desktop app because its intended work resembles using an editor or terminal more than opening a shared document: operators may spend long sessions in it, rely on persistent context, and need access to local resources. That is a design rationale, not proof that ICE is faster, safer, or more reliable than a browser-based alternative.

The practical question behind “Why build a desktop app in 2026?” is whether those capabilities matter enough for a particular tool to justify installation, updates, signing, and cross-platform maintenance.

Why Lightcloud says ICE should be a desktop app

In its August 24, 2026 post, Lightcloud describes ICE (Integrated Cloud Environment) as an infrastructure tool in development and says the desktop decision has been made. Its central distinction is between a shared document and a professional instrument. A document often benefits most from a link that makes it easy to share and edit together. An editor, terminal, or debugger is used repeatedly, often for extended sessions, and may benefit more from a stable workspace, keyboard-driven interaction, and access to local resources.

The author turns that distinction into a practical question for people responding to an incident: “The last time you were paged, how long did you spend finding the right console tab and re-authenticating before you could even look at the problem?” The comparison is with how quickly an editor opens from the dock. It is a rhetorical framing of the intended workflow, not a measured result for ICE.

What desktop delivery can offer—and what it costs

Decision factor Why a desktop app may fit Why a web app may fit
Reach and collaboration Useful when a person’s established workstation is the main place they work. A link is easy to distribute, and collaborators can work around shared artifacts. Figma is cited by Lightcloud as an example of link-based collaboration.
Local capability Can be appropriate when a workflow needs sustained local compute, filesystem or process access, or deeper operating-system integration. Browser sandboxing can limit access to local resources.
Continuity Local context or workflows may remain useful when offline or when a cloud control plane is impaired, if the application is designed to support that. Browser-based access depends on the web service and connectivity for many workflows.
Credentials and security boundary ICE’s stated goal is to keep infrastructure context and credentials locally, rather than route cloud credentials through a vendor backend. Where credentials are stored and whether they pass through a service provider depend on the specific product’s design.
Maintenance Requires packaging, signing, updates, and support across target operating systems. Updates can be deployed centrally, without users managing an installation.
Workflow Can suit long sessions, keyboard-heavy work, customization, and persistent state. Can suit quick access, broad availability, and work centered on shared online content.

These are trade-offs, not guarantees. A desktop app is not automatically usable offline or more secure; those outcomes depend on how it is built. Likewise, a browser app can be a strong fit for many professional tools.

How the 2025 developer-tool figures fit the argument

Lightcloud’s post reports the following shares from the Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2025 for development environments. It describes the question as multi-select, so the percentages are not meant to add up to 100%.

When a desktop app is better than a web app

A desktop-first choice is easier to justify when the core task depends on capabilities that a browser-based product cannot provide as well, and when the benefits outweigh the extra deployment work. The Hooman Studio comparison published November 28, 2025 frames web as the stronger default for reach, fast iteration, and discoverability, while desktop can make sense for sustained local processing, offline use, or deeper hardware and operating-system access.

  • Choose web-first when users need easy access by link, collaboration around shared work, or updates that do not require an installation.
  • Consider desktop when users work in sustained sessions and need local compute, access to files or processes, OS integration, or continuity that can be designed to survive a network or service disruption.
  • Check the security boundary by asking where credentials are stored and whether they transit the vendor’s service. The delivery format alone does not answer that question.
  • Count the operating burden of packaging, signing, updates, and maintaining each supported platform against the user benefits.

Martin Kleppmann, Adam Wiggins, Peter van Hardenberg, and Mark McGranaghan’s 2019 Ink & Switch essay “Local-first software” is quoted in the Lightcloud post with the fragment: “…the availability of another computer should never prevent you from working.” It captures the continuity principle behind the argument, but it does not establish that ICE already works offline or remains available during a control-plane outage.

What is—and is not—established about ICE

Lightcloud’s post establishes the company’s stated rationale and says ICE is in development. It describes local storage of infrastructure context and credentials as a design goal intended to help operators retain access if a cloud console is impaired and to avoid sending cloud credentials through a vendor backend. Those are product intentions, not independently verified security or availability properties.
