Most cows can be checked about 28–30 days after the last possible breeding with transrectal ultrasound or a pregnancy-associated glycoprotein (PAG) blood test. Skilled transrectal palpation is usually scheduled later, around 35–40 days or more. Count from the final date a cow could have conceived—not simply from the day you first saw a bull—and remember that an early positive confirms pregnancy at that moment, not a guaranteed live calf.

Start the clock with the last possible breeding date

Pregnancy diagnosis is only as reliable as the date used to schedule it. In a defined breeding season, record the day the bull was removed or the last day a cow could have been bred. If cows had access to a bull after that date, use the later possible breeding opportunity. A test scheduled too soon can miss late conceptions.

For example, if the final possible breeding date was January 31, an ultrasound or PAG blood test window beginning around February 28 (28 days later) to March 2 (30 days later) is a reasonable initial target. A palpation appointment would generally be later, around March 7–12 (35–40 days after January 31), depending on the practitioner’s experience and local practice rules.

These are broad scheduling windows, not guarantees for every animal or test. Follow the instructions for the particular blood test, and ask the veterinarian or qualified operator whether a later confirmation is preferable for your management decision.

Which method gives the answer you need?

Method Broad earliest window Information available Practical limits
Transrectal ultrasound About 28–30 days after breeding in extension guidance Immediate assessment; can visualize embryonic or fetal structures and, at suitable stages, provide fetal-age, twin, sex or reproductive-tract information Requires equipment, safe handling facilities and a trained operator; an early exam cannot rule out later pregnancy loss
PAG blood test Commonly about 28–30 days after breeding, subject to the product label Detects pregnancy-associated glycoproteins without an internal examination Usually provides less staging information; samples may need shipping or laboratory processing; residual PAG after calving can cause a false positive
Transrectal palpation Often about 35–40 days or later Immediate result; an experienced practitioner may estimate gestational age and assess the reproductive tract Early accuracy depends heavily on skill, anatomy and uterine condition; rules may restrict who performs early palpation
Progesterone monitoring Low progesterone around days 21–24 after breeding can support an “open” finding Useful evidence of non-pregnancy and as part of heat-detection programs A high progesterone result by itself is not direct confirmation of a maintained pregnancy

Ultrasound: earliest visual confirmation

Transrectal ultrasound is often chosen when a producer wants an early answer plus information beyond pregnant or open. At roughly 28–30 days after breeding, an experienced operator may identify embryonic or fetal structures. The same examination can sometimes provide an estimate of fetal age, identify twins, or reveal other reproductive-tract findings when the pregnancy is far enough along and the images are adequate.

Ultrasound does not eliminate timing risk. A very early scan can confirm a pregnancy that is subsequently lost, and image interpretation is operator-dependent. Physical differences among cows, uterine position and fluid can make an examination more difficult. A fluid-filled uterus is not automatically proof of pregnancy.

Operations with frequent pregnancy-checking needs may consider a portable veterinary ultrasound scanner, but the equipment is specialist capital, not a requirement for every owner. It is useful only when a trained person can operate it, interpret images and handle cattle safely. Hiring a veterinarian or qualified reproductive professional is often more practical for seasonal work.

PAG blood testing: a non-invasive option

PAG tests detect pregnancy-associated glycoproteins in a blood sample. They are commonly used around 28–30 days after breeding, provided the chosen test’s instructions allow testing at that interval. The method avoids a rectal examination and can suit a herd that has dependable sampling, shipping and laboratory logistics.

A blood result generally answers the pregnancy-status question rather than staging the pregnancy. If you need fetal age, twin detection or a visual check of the reproductive tract, ultrasound or skilled palpation supplies information a blood test usually does not.

Why days since calving matter

PAG can remain in circulation after a previous pregnancy. Testing a cow too soon after calving can therefore produce a false-positive result. Check the test label for its required days-post-calving interval and tell the testing provider when each cow calved. When a result conflicts with the breeding record or the cow’s appearance, obtain veterinary interpretation or repeat testing at an appropriate interval rather than treating the first number as definitive.

Palpation: later, immediate and highly operator-dependent

Transrectal palpation is commonly scheduled around 35–40 days after breeding or later. A skilled practitioner may detect pregnancy earlier in some cows, but early palpation requires particular expertise. The examiner evaluates changes in the uterus and reproductive tract and may estimate gestational age.

The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences recommends that palpation before 45 days be performed only by licensed veterinarians or embryologists because of risk concerns. Oklahoma State University Extension notes that state veterinary-practice acts can govern who may perform specialized palpation or ultrasound. Requirements differ by location, so confirm local rules before arranging an examination.

Do not equate a low-cost or rapid appointment with a reliable diagnosis. Early examinations are especially sensitive to training, cow anatomy and the quality of the handling facility. Use a chute and restraint system appropriate for the cattle, and ask the practitioner what date range they consider dependable for your herd.

What “reliably pregnant” means at different dates

An early positive is a snapshot: the cow met the test’s criteria on the day of examination. It is not a promise that a calf will be born. K-State veterinarian Bob Larson explains, “Timing really matters when it comes to pregnancy diagnosis.” He adds, “If you check too early, you may identify pregnancies that won’t be maintained or miss pregnancies that occur later.”

Early embryonic or fetal loss is part of normal biology. Alabama Cooperative Extension reports that approximately 5 percent of cows diagnosed pregnant before 60 days may experience early fetal death. That is the extension article’s approximate estimate, not a universal rate for every herd, breed, season or test. If your management decision depends on a maintained pregnancy rather than the earliest possible detection, discuss a later confirmation with your veterinarian.

Nebraska Extension reports a 1–3.5 percent pregnancy-loss range in research involving palpation or ultrasound at 40–75 days of gestation. The available summary provides limited study detail, so treat that range as context from the cited research rather than a prediction for an individual operation.

Choose the test by the decision you must make

Need to sort cows into pregnant and open quickly

A PAG blood test can fit a simple status decision when the cows meet the test’s postpartum requirement and sample logistics are dependable. Ultrasound or palpation provides an immediate result during the cattle-handling session.

Need age, twins or reproductive-tract information

Choose ultrasound or an experienced palpator. These methods can provide information beyond a binary result; a blood test generally cannot stage the pregnancy or show twins.

Need the earliest practical confirmation

Plan for ultrasound or a PAG test around 28–30 days after the last possible breeding, using the exact instructions for the chosen test. An early positive should be tracked for possible loss.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Need the strongest management confidence

Consider an initial check in the early window followed by a later confirmation when the economic or welfare decision is important. The correct interval depends on the herd’s breeding records, calving history, test instructions and veterinary advice.

A practical scheduling and examination workflow

  1. Close the breeding window. Record bull removal, artificial-insemination dates and any later exposure to a bull. Identify the last possible conception date for each group.
  2. Record calving dates. For every cow considered for a PAG test, note days since calving so residual PAG does not invalidate the interpretation.
  3. Define the decision. Decide whether you need only pregnant/open status, an immediate on-site answer, pregnancy age, twin information or a reproductive-tract assessment.
  4. Select a qualified provider and method. Confirm operator training, equipment, sample handling, expected turnaround and any state or provincial practice requirements.
  5. Schedule at the method’s window. Use approximately 28–30 days for ultrasound or PAG testing and approximately 35–40 days or later for palpation, unless the practitioner recommends a different date.
  6. Prepare safe handling. Use appropriate restraint, keep identification records and minimize stress. Early internal examinations should not be attempted by untrained personnel.
  7. Record the result and timing. Store the cow ID, last possible breeding date, calving date, method, operator, test date and result together. The date explains what an early positive does—and does not—mean.
  8. Plan follow-up. Recheck early positives when a maintained pregnancy matters, and investigate cows with results that conflict with breeding records, postpartum status or physical findings.

Costs, equipment and logistics

Published extension estimates illustrate the relative cost categories, but they are not current universal quotes. University of Florida IFAS gives an estimated blood pregnancy-test cost of approximately $5 per animal, varying with sample count and test. The same source estimates ultrasound diagnosis at $10–$20 per head and rectal palpation at $2–$10 per head, with substantial variation based on equipment and service costs.

Those figures should be evaluated alongside labor, cattle gathering, shipping or laboratory fees, travel and the cost of a missed late conception. A blood test may be financially attractive when many cows can be sampled together; ultrasound or palpation may be more efficient when an operator is already visiting and an immediate result is needed. For a recurring large-herd program, owning a portable scanner can change the cost calculation, but only if trained operation and maintenance are available.

Historical USDA National Animal Health Monitoring System data from 2017, reported by Oklahoma State University Extension in 2023, found that 19.3 percent of operations used palpation, 8.8 percent used ultrasound and 3.5 percent used blood testing. Those are historical operation-use shares, not current adoption rates and not measures of diagnostic accuracy.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Counting from the wrong date: Use the last possible breeding, not the first observed service or the day the bull was introduced.
  • Testing a fresh cow with a PAG assay: Check the test’s days-post-calving requirement because residual PAG can create a false positive.
  • Using early palpation without qualified help: Arrange a licensed veterinarian, embryologist or other legally authorized professional, particularly before 45 days.
  • Assuming a positive guarantees a calf: Record the result as an early pregnancy diagnosis and account for possible loss.
  • Treating any uterine fluid as pregnancy: Ultrasound and palpation findings must be interpreted by an experienced operator.
  • Choosing a method without considering the decision: A status-only question, a need for fetal age, and a need to identify twins call for different evidence.
  • Ignoring local law: Veterinary-practice acts may restrict specialized palpation or ultrasound. Verify the rule where the cattle are located.

Bottom line for scheduling

For most breeding programs, mark the last possible breeding date and arrange ultrasound or a properly timed PAG blood test at about 28–30 days. Use palpation around 35–40 days or later with a qualified practitioner. Interpret early positives as time-specific findings, account for postpartum PAG limits, and schedule a later confirmation when the decision depends on a pregnancy being maintained.
