No authoritative WhatsApp or Meta source confirms a new one-tap “Request Location” button. The design currently circulating is a personal UX concept, while the wording appears similar to an existing Apple Messages workflow. As of 16 October 2026, WhatsApp has not published a rollout date, supported country list or beta-build number for such a feature.
Is WhatsApp adding a one-tap “Request Location” button?
There is no verified evidence that WhatsApp is developing or rolling out the alleged control. The closest match is a post by designer Poojitha Baddigam describing a hypothetical “Request Location” control. Her post explicitly identifies it as a personal UX concept rather than an existing WhatsApp feature.
Indexed WhatsApp beta coverage from WABetaInfo discusses other Status changes, including sharing a Status with recently contacted unsaved numbers and controls for resharing. Those reports do not verify a location-request tool. No reliable statistic exists for testing, adoption or rollout of the alleged feature.
Why are people seeing the phrase “Where are you?”
It may come from Apple Messages
Apple’s official Messages documentation describes a workflow in which someone sends a message ending with “Where are you?” and then taps “Request Location.” That is an Apple Messages action, not a WhatsApp capability. Similar wording can therefore be mistaken for a WhatsApp announcement or copied into a concept mock-up.

It may be a concept rather than a leaked feature
A polished interface image or design post can look like a product leak even when it is speculative. In this case, the creator’s own description is the key qualification: the proposed control is a personal UX idea. It does not establish that WhatsApp has built, tested or approved the feature.
What WhatsApp currently documents
WhatsApp’s official Status documentation says users can share photos, videos, voice notes and text. Status posts disappear after 24 hours; users select who can see each post and can mention contacts. None of those documented controls is a one-tap request for another person’s location.

WhatsApp’s official calling information says voice and video calls are free, although mobile-data charges may apply. Calls are end-to-end encrypted, work across iOS, Android and the web, and support both one-to-one and group conversations. Calling availability does not imply a location-request feature.

Meta said in a June 2025 newsroom announcement that WhatsApp’s Updates tab contains Status and Channels and that 1.5 billion people used the tab each day globally at that time. The announcement described the scale of Status and Channels, not a location-sharing request control.

What you can do instead
Ask in chat and share a location manually
- Open the WhatsApp conversation with the person.
- Ask where they are and explain why you need the information.
- Have them open the attachment or plus menu, choose the location option and select either a one-time location pin or live location, where available on their device and account.
- For live location, the sender chooses an expiry period and can stop sharing before it expires.
The exact menu label and placement can vary by operating system and app version. A recipient must actively choose to share; a message cannot silently obtain their location.
Use a normal location pin when a live trail is unnecessary
A one-time pin communicates a place without continuously updating. It is usually the better choice for a meeting point, delivery address or “I’m here” message. Live location is intended for a journey or time-sensitive meetup and should be stopped when it is no longer needed.

How a real WhatsApp location-request feature should be evaluated
If WhatsApp confirms a feature later, these are the details that determine what it actually does:

| Request or manual sharing? | A request could reduce steps, but the recipient should still give explicit consent. |
| One-time pin or live location? | These provide different levels of precision, duration and privacy. |
| Stop-sharing controls | Live sharing needs a clear way to end access immediately. |
| Expiry duration | An automatic end time limits accidental long-term sharing. |
| Platform support | Availability may differ between Android, iOS and web. |
| Geography and build | A staged beta or regional test is not the same as stable release availability. |
How to verify claims about the feature
- Look for an announcement or help-page update from WhatsApp or Meta, not only a screenshot.
- Check whether a report names a specific beta or stable version and explains how to enable the control.
- Confirm the country or region covered; staged tests may not appear for every account.
- Distinguish a designer’s concept from a WhatsApp interface shown in an official build.
- Do not install unofficial modified apps or grant unnecessary location permissions to test an unverified button.
Bottom line
The “Where are you?” WhatsApp feature is not confirmed as of 16 October 2026. The matching “Request Location” design is explicitly a personal concept, and the phrasing may have been borrowed from Apple Messages. WhatsApp users can still request a location in ordinary chat and rely on the recipient to send a one-time pin or live location, but there is no verified WhatsApp one-tap request control, release date, geography or beta version to install.
