Open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Privacy to control who can see your activity, profile details and Status, who can add you to groups, and how unknown callers are handled. The Privacy Checkup in the same area walks through the most important choices. Menu labels and rollout timing can differ between Android, iPhone, Web and individual accounts, so use the wording visible in your app.
Start with WhatsApp’s Privacy screen
On most current versions, tap Settings, then Privacy. WhatsApp groups the controls by the information other people can see and the ways they can contact you. If you are unsure what each item does, choose Privacy Checkup from this screen and work through its prompts. It is a guided tour, not a separate privacy mode, so you can still open each setting directly afterward.
Some controls are account-wide, while others apply only to a particular feature. For example, the setting for your profile photo is separate from the audience you choose for a Status update. A change also may affect what you can see about other people; privacy is sometimes reciprocal rather than one-way.

WhatsApp’s general visibility controls commonly provide four choices: Everyone, My contacts, My contacts except…, and Nobody. Select the setting you want to change, choose an audience, and confirm. The exact list can vary slightly by platform and account.
#1 Best Overall
| Control | What it governs | Available audience choices described by WhatsApp |
|---|---|---|
| Last seen and online | When you were last active and whether you are currently online | Everyone, My contacts, My contacts except…, Nobody; online visibility can follow a separate choice linked to last seen |
| Profile photo | The image shown on your account | Everyone, My contacts, My contacts except…, Nobody |
| About | The short text attached to your profile | Everyone, My contacts, My contacts except…, Nobody |
| Links shared on profile | Links displayed as part of your profile information | Use the audience choices offered in your app |
| Read receipts | Whether one-to-one chats show that a message has been read | On or off rather than a contact-by-contact audience |
WhatsApp’s current help guidance describes profile photo, read receipts and online status as visible to any user by default in the relevant account configuration. It also describes contacts as able to see Status, About, profile links and last seen by default, while unknown callers can call. Defaults and labels can change, so check your own Privacy screen instead of assuming a newly created account has the same configuration.
Understand the last-seen and online trade-off
If you stop sharing your last seen or online information, WhatsApp says you will not be able to see other users’ last seen or online information either. This is not a way to hide your activity while continuing to monitor everyone else’s. You can narrow the audience to selected contacts with My contacts except…, but the reciprocal effect still applies to the information you elect not to share.
Understand read receipts before turning them off
Turning off read receipts removes the blue read indicator from your one-to-one chats and also removes your ability to see other people’s read receipts. WhatsApp says read receipts are always sent in group chats, so this switch does not make group conversations anonymous. Delivery indicators and other activity signals can still reveal that a message reached a device.
Set a separate audience for Status
Status has its own privacy menu. Open Settings > Privacy > Status (or open the Status privacy option shown in your app) and choose one of three audiences:
- My contacts: all contacts covered by your account’s Status rules.
- My contacts except…: everyone in your contacts except the people you exclude.
- Only share with…: a list you select for that Status audience.
A Status audience change is not retroactive. It governs future sharing and does not change who could see a Status you already posted. If an old update needs a different audience, delete it and post it again after changing the setting.

Exceptions created by mentions and groups
A person or group mentioned in a Status can see it even when they are outside the audience you selected. If you mention a group, all members of that group can see the Status. A Status posted to a group is visible to that group’s members regardless of the selected Status privacy setting. Treat a mention as an intentional expansion of the audience, not merely as a notification.
WhatsApp also says people or groups mentioned in a Status can reshare it to their own audience. The help guidance states that such a reshare does not reveal the original poster’s name, profile information or phone number. That does not prevent the reshared material itself from reaching people you did not choose, so avoid posting anything that would be harmful if copied.

Control who can add you to groups
In Settings > Privacy, open the groups control and choose Everyone, My contacts or My contacts except…. The most restrictive practical choice is to allow contacts and exclude specific people. If someone who cannot add you tries, WhatsApp can provide an invitation flow instead of placing you in the group automatically.
You can leave a group you do not want and use WhatsApp’s reporting option when the group or its content violates your boundaries or the service’s rules. Group privacy settings reduce unsolicited additions; they do not erase information already visible to group members.
Know the phone-number limitation
WhatsApp’s official help page states: There is no way to hide your phone number when using WhatsApp.
In groups, members can see one another’s numbers when they are added. Changing profile visibility, blocking someone or restricting group invitations does not conceal your number from people who share a group with you.
Rank #3
Block, report and silence unknown callers
Blocking a specific account prevents that account from sending you messages, calling you or viewing your Status updates through the blocked relationship. Reporting sends information about the account to WhatsApp for review. These actions are useful for a persistent contact, but they are not the same as making your account unreachable through every route or hiding your number in a shared group.
Silence unknown callers is a separate privacy control. It can prevent calls from unknown numbers from ringing while keeping them visible in your call list. Because it is separate from blocking, review both settings when dealing with repeated unwanted calls.
Inspect the additional privacy controls
The Privacy screen also lists protections that are easy to overlook. They address different risks, so enabling one does not make the others unnecessary.
- Default disappearing-message timer: sets a default duration for new chats that support disappearing messages. It does not guarantee that a recipient cannot preserve a copy.
- Live-location sharing: review active shares and stop any that you no longer need. Location sharing is a chat feature, not a blanket location shield for the phone.
- Protect IP address in calls: an advanced call setting intended to reduce exposure of network information during calls. It can affect call routing or quality.
- Disable link previews: removes automatic previews for links you send, reducing the extra preview request associated with a shared URL.
- Block high volumes of unknown messages: helps reduce message floods from unfamiliar accounts; it is not a promise that every unwanted message will be stopped.
Check these controls after an app update because their location, wording and availability can vary by platform and account rollout.
What end-to-end encryption protects—and what it cannot
WhatsApp’s Privacy at a Glance explains that personal messages, calls, Status updates and location shared in chats are end-to-end encrypted. In that model, only you and the intended chat participants can read, hear or see the protected content while it is handled as an encrypted conversation.
Rank #4
Encryption does not control a recipient’s device. WhatsApp’s safety guidance warns: When you share a chat, photo, video, file or voice message with someone else on WhatsApp, they’ll have a copy of these messages.
A recipient can take a screenshot, record a call or screen, photograph another device, forward a message or reshare a Status. Disappearing messages and a restricted Status audience cannot undo those actions.
Encryption also does not mean WhatsApp collects no information. Its privacy overview describes information users provide, technical information, and information received from other users. It also discusses circumstances in which information may be shared, including group membership and cloud backups to an iCloud or Google Account. Decide what to post with both the encrypted transport and the later handling of the content in mind.

Privacy settings control what other people can see; account protection helps prevent someone else from taking over the account. WhatsApp’s current two-step-verification guidance describes a transition from a six-digit PIN toward a password and includes controls for changing the credential, updating the email address and reviewing trusted devices.
This change is rollout-sensitive. Follow the labels and prompts shown in your own app and the current WhatsApp Help Center rather than assuming every account has the same password screen. Use an email address you can access, review trusted devices regularly, and never share a verification credential with someone who contacts you unexpectedly.

A practical privacy setup sequence
- Open Settings > Privacy and run Privacy Checkup if it is offered.
- Set Last seen and online, Profile photo and About to the narrowest audience that still works for you. Remember the reciprocal effect for last seen and online.
- Decide whether read receipts are worth the trade-off. Disabling them also hides other people’s one-to-one receipts, while group receipts remain on.
- Open Status privacy separately. Choose a default audience and review the list before posting anything sensitive.
- Check the groups control and exclude people who should not be able to add you automatically.
- Turn on silencing for unknown callers if you do not want unfamiliar numbers to ring, then block or report specific accounts that continue contacting you.
- Review disappearing-message defaults, live-location shares, call IP protection, link previews and high-volume unknown-message blocking.
- Open the account-security area, configure the current two-step-verification option shown to you, and inspect trusted devices.
- Before posting, ask whether a recipient could copy, record or reshare the material. No audience setting can remove that possibility.
Common privacy mistakes and fixes
- Assuming a Status change protects an existing post: it does not. Delete the old Status and repost after changing the audience.
- Forgetting group and mention exceptions: a mentioned person, a mentioned group’s members, or members of a group where the Status was posted can see it outside the ordinary audience.
- Expecting blocking to hide a phone number: blocking affects contact from that account; it does not hide your number from members of a shared group.
- Turning off read receipts without expecting a reciprocal loss: you will not see other users’ one-to-one read receipts either, and groups still send receipts.
- Treating encryption as a guarantee against copying: recipients can retain and redistribute what they receive.
- Assuming every device has identical labels: Android, iPhone, Web and staged account rollouts can present different wording. Look for the equivalent Privacy or account-security control in your version.
The right mental model for WhatsApp privacy
WhatsApp privacy is a collection of audience, contact and account controls rather than a single private-mode switch. Profile and presence settings determine routine visibility; Status has its own audience and exceptions; group membership exposes information to people in the group; blocking and call silencing address different kinds of unwanted contact; and encryption protects the chat content in transit while leaving recipients in control of copies. Set each layer deliberately, then reassess after major app updates or changes in who you communicate with.
