If WhatsApp’s Chats, Updates, Communities or Calls tabs disappeared or moved, first update WhatsApp, install any pending phone update and restart the device. WhatsApp is changing navigation through staged releases, so a different order can be an intentional rollout rather than a fault. Android users can then force-stop WhatsApp and clear its cache; iPhone users should close and reopen the app. Do not clear Android storage or delete WhatsApp on an iPhone until your chats and account access are protected.
There is no documented WhatsApp setting that lets you drag, hide or restore the navigation tabs manually. If the layout remains different after the non-destructive steps, treat it as a possible account or release variation, document your software versions and contact WhatsApp through its in-app Help route.
Why WhatsApp tabs can move or disappear
WhatsApp’s Help Center describes the Android navigation bar as four tabs—Chats, Updates, Communities and Calls—at the bottom of the screen. It also identifies Chats as the first screen shown when WhatsApp opens. That description is a guide to the current Android design, not a promise that every account will display an identical layout at every moment.

A staged rollout can alter navigation for some accounts before others, or change what appears inside a tab. A phone that shows a different order from a friend’s phone is therefore useful for comparison, but it does not by itself prove that your installation is broken.

Separate a true missing tab from a tab that has moved:
- Moved tab: all expected labels are present, but their positions differ from the documented Android order or from another device.
- Hidden by the current design: the tab is not visible on the first screen but may be represented by a button, menu or changed section.
- Local display problem: labels are blank, the bar does not render, or the interface is frozen after an update.
- Account or rollout difference: the app works normally, but the navigation design differs consistently from another user’s version.
Use the least destructive fix first. An update or restart preserves local WhatsApp data; clearing storage or deleting the app can remove data held on the phone.

1. Check whether WhatsApp is rolling out a different layout
Before changing app data, inspect the whole screen rather than assuming the old order is required. On Android, the documented order is Chats, Updates, Communities and Calls in the bottom navigation bar. If those labels are all present but arranged differently, the difference may be intentional.

Compare the right things
- Check the WhatsApp version number on both phones, not just the phone model.
- Note whether both phones run Android or both run iOS; the platforms do not expose identical controls.
- Compare the entire navigation area, including any profile or account control, rather than looking only for one label.
- Use another device only as a diagnostic. A friend’s layout may be on a different account, release channel or rollout stage.
Do not uninstall WhatsApp solely because another account has a different order. A local reset cannot make a server-assigned experiment or staged interface revert to an earlier design.

2. Update WhatsApp, update the phone and restart
WhatsApp’s own Help Center gives two first-line actions when a control cannot be found: check that you are using the latest version and restart the device. Apply both platform and app updates before moving to repair steps.
- Open Google Play on Android or the App Store on iPhone.
- Search for WhatsApp and install an available update. If the store shows an Open button, check again later; updates can be released in stages.
- Install any pending Android system or iOS update offered in the phone’s software-update settings. Keep the phone charged and connected to Wi-Fi when practical.
- Close WhatsApp, restart the phone, unlock it and open WhatsApp again.
- Check whether the navigation bar now renders and whether the expected labels are available.
An update can contain a user-interface change, so success does not necessarily mean that the old order returns. The goal of this step is to place the app and operating system in a supported, consistent state.
3. Android: force-stop and clear the cache
Android provides two controls that are useful for a local WhatsApp display problem. Force stop ends the running process. Clearing the cache removes temporary files that Android can recreate. The exact wording varies by phone manufacturer, but the usual path is Settings > Apps > WhatsApp.

Force-stop WhatsApp
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, App management or a similarly named app-list entry.
- Select WhatsApp.
- Tap Force stop, confirm, then reopen WhatsApp from the home screen or app drawer.
Force stopping does not change your account or delete chats. It simply makes WhatsApp build its screen again instead of continuing a stuck process.

Clear only the cache
- Return to Settings > Apps > WhatsApp.
- Open Storage or Storage & cache.
- Tap Clear cache. Do not tap Clear storage at this stage.
- Launch WhatsApp and inspect the tabs.
Cached data is temporary. Removing it can correct a damaged local UI state, but it cannot guarantee a different navigation order when WhatsApp is assigning that design from its servers.
What Android’s Clear storage button does
Google Android Help distinguishes cache from storage: Clear storage permanently deletes all app data. Depending on your backup and account state, that can remove local WhatsApp information and require setup again. Treat it as a reset, not as a routine tab-order fix. Only consider it after confirming that your chats are protected and that you can receive the account verification code.
4. iPhone: close, restart, update and only then redownload
Apple’s official troubleshooting sequence for an app that is not behaving correctly is to close and reopen it, restart the device, check app and iOS updates, and delete and redownload the app if the problem persists. iOS does not offer Android’s separate force-stop and cache buttons, so follow Apple’s sequence instead of looking for those controls.
Close and reopen WhatsApp
- Open the iPhone app switcher. On Face ID models, swipe up from the bottom edge and pause; on models with a Home button, double-click Home.
- Find the WhatsApp card and swipe it up to close it.
- Return to the Home Screen and tap WhatsApp.
If the bar was missing because the process had stalled, reopening may restore it without touching your data.

Restart and update
- Restart the iPhone using its normal power-off and power-on controls.
- Open the App Store, tap your account picture and install any pending WhatsApp update.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update and install an available iOS update if your phone supports it.
- Open WhatsApp again and check the complete navigation area.
Delete and redownload only after protecting chats
If the interface is still defective, Apple’s next step is to delete and redownload the app. Apple warns that deleting an app may lose data stored in that app. Before doing this, confirm that WhatsApp’s chat backup is current, that you know the phone number and verification method on the account, and that any required two-step verification information is available.
- Verify your latest WhatsApp chat backup from WhatsApp’s chat-backup settings while the existing installation still opens.
- Confirm that you can receive SMS or calls for account verification and that you have access to any two-step verification credentials.
- Delete WhatsApp, reinstall it from the App Store and complete account verification.
- Restore the offered backup only after checking that it is the intended account and date.
Reinstallation may repair damaged local files. It cannot guarantee that WhatsApp will show the former tab order if the account is part of a current interface rollout.

The official WhatsApp and platform guidance reviewed for this problem does not document a setting that lets users drag, hide or restore the navigation tabs. Android’s standard order is documented as Chats, Updates, Communities and Calls, but that documentation does not provide an editing control. Meta’s 2026 rollout announcement also demonstrates that navigation-related changes can arrive as product updates.

Be cautious with unofficial modified clients, accessibility overlays or “tab customizer” utilities that claim to force a layout. They are not an official repair path, can expose account data and may create compatibility or account-security problems. Use the supported WhatsApp app and platform tools while diagnosing the issue.

Distinguish a local repair from a rollout difference

A useful diagnostic pattern is consistency. If WhatsApp opens normally, messages send and receive, and only the position of the tabs differs, a rollout is more plausible than corrupted storage. If labels flicker, the bar is blank, or the app closes when you switch tabs, local troubleshooting is more justified.
Protect your chats before any destructive reset
Navigation troubleshooting should not create a data-loss incident. Before clearing Android storage or deleting WhatsApp on iPhone, complete these checks:
- Open WhatsApp and verify that recent conversations are present.
- Check the date and account shown in WhatsApp’s chat-backup screen.
- Make sure the destination cloud account has enough space for the backup.
- Confirm the phone number can receive the verification SMS or call.
- Keep two-step verification information available if it is enabled.
- Do not proceed if the app cannot open and you have no verified backup; contact WhatsApp support first.
A cache clear is not the same as clearing storage. Android’s wording matters: the storage command permanently deletes app data, while cached data is temporary. On iPhone, deleting the app carries Apple’s warning that data stored in the app may be lost.
What information to collect if the order is still wrong
If updates, a restart and the platform-specific repair steps do not change the layout, make a concise record before contacting support:
- WhatsApp version shown in WhatsApp’s settings.
- Phone make and model.
- Android or iOS version.
- Country or region, if the rollout appears limited to your account or location.
- The exact labels that are missing or moved.
- Whether the problem began immediately after an update.
- A screenshot showing the complete navigation area, with private message content hidden.
- Whether another account on the same phone, or another phone on the same platform, shows a different design.
Use WhatsApp’s in-app Help route and describe the behavior as a possible rollout or platform variation rather than insisting that the documented order must be restored. Include the version and screenshot so support can distinguish a design change from a rendering defect.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming a different order is malware: Meta has publicly described ongoing feature rollouts, so a changed layout can be a normal release difference.
- Clearing storage first: this is the most destructive Android button and is unnecessary for a simple order change.
- Deleting an iPhone app without checking backup: Apple explicitly warns that app data may be lost.
- Comparing only screenshots: different WhatsApp versions, operating systems and accounts can receive different interfaces.
- Installing unofficial clients: they are not an official way to customize tabs and can introduce security and compatibility risks.
- Repeating the same reset: if a clean reinstall produces the same order, the cause is more likely a rollout than leftover cache files.
When to wait and when to escalate
Wait for a rollout to settle when every expected function works and only the arrangement differs. Continue troubleshooting or contact support promptly when a tab is absent from every relevant menu, the bar is blank, WhatsApp crashes when switching sections, or messages and calls are also failing.
The practical boundary is simple: updates and restarts are safe attempts; Android cache clearing is a low-risk local repair; Android storage clearing and iPhone deletion are destructive resets; and no documented official control lets you choose a custom tab order. Once the supported steps are exhausted, support—not another reinstall—is the appropriate next action.
