WhatsApp Live Location usually stops updating for one of five reasons: the sender’s sharing timer ended, sharing was stopped, the phone denied background location access, battery controls suspended WhatsApp, or the phone cannot obtain a usable network or location signal. First open the chat and verify that the live share is still active. If the timer has ended, the sender must start a new share. If updates appear only while WhatsApp is open, investigate background permissions and battery restrictions on the sender’s phone.
The quickest way to narrow it down is to identify the symptom: a static card after a completed share, no location at all, or updates that work only in the foreground. The sender’s phone generates the coordinates, so most fixes must be made there rather than on the recipient’s device.
What a “stuck” WhatsApp Live Location actually indicates
Live Location is a temporary stream from the sender’s phone, not a permanent pin. The sender selects a duration when sharing. When that duration expires, or when the sender stops sharing, WhatsApp stops sending new coordinates. There is no single published update interval or failure rate that can diagnose every handset. Results depend on the phone model, operating-system version, WhatsApp version, permission state, battery policy, connectivity and location conditions. Treat the tables as a decision aid, not as proof of one universal WhatsApp defect.
Run these checks before changing settings
- Check the share status on the sender’s phone. Open the WhatsApp chat that contains the live location. If the duration has finished or the sender chose to stop sharing, the old card is no longer a live feed. Start a new live-location share with a new duration.
- Confirm that you are checking the correct chat. Live Location is shared with specific people or a group. A different conversation may contain an older, static location card.
- Test the sender’s connection and location signal. The phone needs working mobile data or Wi-Fi and a usable GPS/location signal to determine and transmit its position. Move to an area with a clearer signal if the phone cannot obtain a fix.
- Observe foreground behavior. Have the sender leave WhatsApp open briefly, then move a short distance and check the card. If the position changes only while WhatsApp is visible, that points to a background restriction rather than a recipient-side display problem.
- Do not treat the thumbnail as proof of a current position. After a share ends, WhatsApp deliberately retains a static thumbnail and the last updated location. The recipient cannot turn that old card back into a live stream.
- Check both ends of the conversation. Ask the sender to read the share status and ask the recipient to confirm the exact chat and person or group. This avoids changing the recipient’s settings when the sender’s timer has simply expired.
Fix Live Location on an iPhone
1. Turn on Location Services
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security, then Location Services.
- Turn Location Services on.
Apple states that when Location Services are off, apps cannot use location from Location Services in either the foreground or the background. A disabled system switch therefore prevents WhatsApp from obtaining a live position regardless of the permission selected for the app.
2. Give WhatsApp an appropriate location permission
- Remain in Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Tap WhatsApp.
- Choose the access level required for live sharing. WhatsApp’s iPhone guidance uses Always for continuous background updating when that option is available.
The exact choices shown can depend on the iOS release. If WhatsApp has only limited or foreground access, a share may stop being refreshed after the app is no longer active. Read the wording on your phone rather than assuming every iPhone presents the same options.

3. Send a fresh test share
- Return to the conversation.
- Start a new live-location share and select a duration.
- Leave WhatsApp open during the first test; do not force-close it from the app switcher.
- After confirming that a new position appears, lock the phone or switch apps and check whether updates continue.
This test separates an expired share from a background-access problem. A new share is necessary because an old card cannot resume once its duration has ended.
4. If the iPhone still stops updating
Record the iOS version, WhatsApp version, iPhone model, network type, signal conditions and whether the location changes when WhatsApp is brought to the foreground. No universal iOS-version defect has been identified in official guidance, so these details are needed before attributing the symptom to a software bug. If the location works in the foreground but not after locking the phone, concentrate on permission and background behavior rather than repeatedly reinstalling WhatsApp.

Fix Live Location on Android
1. Allow WhatsApp to use location
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, choose WhatsApp, then open Permissions.
- Tap Location and grant an allowed option.
Android releases and handset makers use different labels. Depending on the device, you may see Allow only while using the app, Ask every time or Don’t allow, along with an option that permits broader background access. WhatsApp warns that disabling permissions can remove functionality. Select the level that allows the continuous sharing behavior you need.
2. Enable the phone’s Location setting
Permission for WhatsApp does not override a disabled system Location switch. Turn Location on from the device’s Settings or Quick Settings, then create a new live share and test again. A permission can appear correctly configured while the system-wide switch still blocks every location request.

Android’s power controls can suspend work that occurs after you leave an app. Review these areas for WhatsApp, using the names provided by your handset:
- Battery Saver: turn it off for the test. Android documents that Battery Saver changes how location behaves.
- Battery optimization: set WhatsApp to an unrestricted or not-optimized mode if your phone offers that choice.
- Background data: allow WhatsApp to use data in the background.
- Auto-start or startup management: permit WhatsApp to start and continue operating when the manufacturer provides such a control.
These controls are not universal Android menus. A setting may be located under Battery, App battery usage, Mobile data, Security or a manufacturer-specific device-care screen. Do not assume that instructions for one manufacturer use the same labels on another.
4. Understand Android background-location requirements
Android 10 (API level 29) and later require a separate background-location permission declaration for apps that access location while running in the background. The permission model and labels vary by release, but the practical test is consistent: if the position changes only while WhatsApp is open, inspect background permission and battery policy before concluding that the app itself is defective.

5. Test with a new share
- Open the chat and start a new live-location share.
- Keep WhatsApp in the foreground long enough to confirm that a position is sent.
- Switch away from WhatsApp and check the share again after moving.
- If it freezes only after switching apps, return to the battery, background-data and auto-start checks rather than repeatedly sending the same expired share.
When updates work only while WhatsApp is open
Foreground-only updating is a useful diagnostic clue. It means the phone can obtain and send a position when WhatsApp is active, but something changes when the app is backgrounded. On iPhone, review Location Services and the permission level assigned to WhatsApp. On Android, review background location, Battery Saver, optimization, background data and manufacturer startup controls.

Foreground-only behavior is evidence of a permission or handset-policy issue, not proof of a single WhatsApp defect. Different manufacturers impose different background rules, and the same Android version can expose different controls on different devices.
Fix “WhatsApp can’t find my location”
If WhatsApp cannot find any location, begin with the phone rather than the recipient’s app:
- Turn on system Location Services.
- Confirm that WhatsApp has an allowed location permission.
- Check that mobile data or Wi-Fi is working.
- Move where the phone can obtain a usable GPS/location signal.
- Create a new live-location share after the checks.
Map display and place-name resolution are separate from the live-sharing permission. WhatsApp says that Facebook Places and Google Maps provide map and place information and directs users to those providers when a location cannot be found. A map-label problem therefore does not by itself prove that the live-coordinate service is broken.
Why the recipient sees a static thumbnail
A static thumbnail is the expected result after live sharing stops. WhatsApp keeps the last updated location visible in the chat instead of deleting the card. The recipient cannot force new coordinates from that card, and reinstalling the recipient’s app will not restart a share that ended on the sender’s phone.

Ask the sender to open the conversation, review Privacy > Live location, and start a new share. Only the sender can create the new stream. WhatsApp says Live Location is end-to-end encrypted, so only the people included in the share can see it. The encryption statement describes who can see the live location; it does not keep a share running after its timer expires.
Requirements and common pitfalls
- Timer confusion: A live card is not permanent. Select a duration that covers the journey or meeting, and start another share when it ends.
- Stopping the share manually: The sender can end sharing before the selected duration. The recipient will still see the last update and may mistake it for a delay.
- Wrong device: Permission changes on the recipient’s phone cannot repair a coordinate stream that the sender’s phone is no longer producing.
- Force-closing WhatsApp: Avoid swiping the app away during a test, especially on iPhone, because the test is meant to measure normal background behavior.
- System switch versus app permission: Both must permit location. Granting WhatsApp access while the phone’s Location switch is off is insufficient.
