WhatsApp’s most useful privacy and security controls are easy to miss. The seven features below let you protect selected conversations on a shared phone, limit how long messages remain available, secure cloud backups, reduce account-takeover risk, screen unknown callers, and control who can see or add you. Feature names and menu locations can vary by Android or iPhone version, language, and rollout stage, so update WhatsApp before looking for a setting.
End-to-end encryption remains the foundation: WhatsApp says personal messages and calls are protected so only the intended participants can see, hear, or share them. The controls below address different risks around that encrypted conversation—such as someone handling your unlocked phone, a backup stored in iCloud or Google Drive, or an unwanted caller.
1. Turn on Advanced Chat Privacy for sensitive conversations
What it changes
Advanced Chat Privacy is designed for chats and groups where participants should have tighter control over what leaves the conversation. WhatsApp says it can block chat export, stop automatic media downloads to participants’ phones, and prevent messages from being used for AI features.
How to enable it
- Open the individual chat or group.
- Tap the chat or group name at the top.
- Tap Advanced Chat Privacy and switch it on.
WhatsApp announced this feature on April 23, 2025, and said it was rolling out to everyone on the latest version. If the control is missing, update the app and check again later; availability can still depend on staged rollout and platform version.

2. Lock selected chats—and hide the Locked Chats folder
Chat Lock versus an app lock
Chat Lock protects chosen conversations, placing them in a separate Locked Chats folder. An app lock, by contrast, protects WhatsApp as a whole. Use Chat Lock when you need privacy for particular conversations while leaving ordinary chats accessible.
Practical setup
- Open the conversation you want to protect and use its chat details to turn on Chat Lock.
- Authenticate with the phone’s screen lock or supported biometric method when prompted.
- In the Locked Chats area, enable the option to hide the folder if your version provides it.
Hiding the folder reduces obvious clues that protected chats exist, but it does not make the phone itself secure. Use a strong device screen lock and avoid leaving the phone unlocked with WhatsApp open.
3. Use disappearing messages to reduce retained history
Choose retention deliberately
WhatsApp lets you choose which messages stick around and for how long. Set disappearing messages for a chat when keeping a permanent transcript is unnecessary, such as routine coordination or time-sensitive plans.

This is a retention control, not a guarantee that a recipient cannot preserve what they saw. Someone can copy information, photograph the screen, or otherwise reproduce content before it disappears. Explain the setting to group members when the timing matters, and use Advanced Chat Privacy as a separate control when export or automatic media downloads are the concern.
4. Encrypt your WhatsApp backup with a passkey
Why backups need their own protection
End-to-end encryption protects messages in transit and in the WhatsApp conversation, but a cloud backup is a separate copy. WhatsApp says encrypted backups extend end-to-end protection to iCloud or Google Drive.
Enable passkey-based backup encryption
- Open Settings.
- Tap Chats, then Chat backup.
- Choose End-to-end encrypted backup.
- When the passkey option is offered, follow the prompts to use your fingerprint, face, or screen-lock code.
Meta announced this passkey-enabled method on October 30, 2025, saying it removes the need to memorize a separate password or a 64-digit encryption key. Rollout is gradual, so the option may not appear yet on every account or device. Do not dismiss recovery prompts casually: losing the credentials required by your chosen backup-encryption method can prevent restoration of that protected backup.

5. Create a passkey and strengthen two-step verification
Set up a WhatsApp passkey
- Open Settings.
- Tap Account.
- Tap Passkeys and follow the on-screen enrollment steps.
WhatsApp’s August 25, 2026 security post says passkeys can use a fingerprint, Face ID, or screen-lock code. Passkeys reduce dependence on a password that can be phished or reused.

Use the upgraded two-step verification password
The same 2026 announcement says WhatsApp upgraded two-step verification from a six-digit PIN to a longer alphanumeric password that can include special characters. Choose a unique password, store it in a reputable password manager, and keep the recovery email or other recovery details current. A passkey and two-step verification address account takeover in different ways, so enabling both provides layered protection rather than a substitute for one another.
6. Silence unknown callers and check caller context
Reduce spam-call interruptions
WhatsApp’s unknown-caller control screens out calls from unknown contacts instead of allowing every unsaved number to ring normally. This can reduce nuisance calls and the chance of being pressured by a scammer, while calls from known contacts continue to work according to your normal settings.

Inspect context before answering
WhatsApp’s 2026 announcement says Android can show context for an unsaved caller, such as that the number is from a different country or that you share groups. Treat those details as signals, not proof of identity. Let an unfamiliar call go unanswered, verify the person through a trusted channel, and never disclose verification codes or account credentials on an unsolicited call.

Limit online and last-seen visibility
Choose who can see when you are online or when you last used WhatsApp. Less visibility can make it harder for casual contacts to infer your routine, but it may also reduce the presence information you can see from others depending on the setting.

Control group additions
Adjust who can add you to groups. Restricting additions prevents unknown or loosely connected contacts from placing you into unwanted conversations and limits exposure to group spam.
Leave groups quietly
WhatsApp allows you to leave a group without notifying everyone. This is useful when you want to stop receiving messages without creating a public departure announcement; administrators may still be able to see the administrative event.
Which setting solves which problem?
