Short answer: A WhatsApp guest-call link does not give a guest a list of participants’ phone numbers or a WhatsApp chat channel. A guest opens the link in a computer browser, enters a name, waits for the host to approve entry, and then can see and hear the call. The host controls admission and can remove the guest. Anyone who obtains the link can try to join, so link handling and the approval gate are the central privacy controls.
Meta announced the feature on October 14, 2026. It supports one-to-one and group calls with up to 32 people, including people who do not have WhatsApp accounts.
How WhatsApp guest calls work
The host creates a call link
A WhatsApp user creates a call link and shares it with the intended participants. Each call-link URL is different. WhatsApp describes the links as secure, but also warns that anyone who has a link can join the call attempt, so the link should be shared only with people you trust.

The guest joins in a computer browser
A person without a WhatsApp account can open the link in a computer browser and enter a name. The name is the guest’s in-call identifier; the guest does not need to create a WhatsApp account to reach the waiting room.

The host must approve every guest
Every guest remains in a waiting room until the host admits them. Meta’s description is explicit: “Anyone joining as a guest always needs the call host’s approval.” A link alone is therefore not automatic entry. The host can deny an attempt before admission and can remove a guest after admission.
Call size and modes
Guest calling supports one-to-one calls and group calls of up to 32 people. Once admitted, a guest can participate in the audio and video conversation and use supported in-call functions such as screen sharing, reactions and hand raising.
What the host can see and control
Waiting-room identity
The host can see who is waiting to enter. Because a guest supplies a name in the browser before joining, that entered name is the practical identity presented to the host. A typed name is not proof of a person’s real identity, so the host should match it against the invitation or another trusted channel before admitting anyone.
Admission decisions
The host decides which waiting-room entries are admitted. If a link might be forwarded, posted in a group, or exposed in a notification, the host should treat every arrival as an unverified request rather than assuming that the person holding the link is an intended invitee.

Removal after admission
Admission is reversible. The host can remove an admitted guest at any time. This is useful if the wrong person enters, a participant changes behavior, or an invite was shared more widely than intended.
What is not established about host-side phone-number visibility
The guest flow is designed for people without WhatsApp accounts and asks them to enter a name. Official descriptions explain the waiting-room and call controls but do not state that the host receives an accountless guest’s personal phone number. Do not treat the displayed name as a verified telephone identity.
What a guest can see after admission
Audio, video and shared activity
After approval, a guest can see and hear the call. They can use the in-call functions that are available to participants, including screen sharing, reactions and hand raising. Anything a participant deliberately presents through the camera, microphone or screen share can therefore be viewed by the other people in the call.

Guests cannot see the other participants’ phone numbers. The guest experience does not expose a directory of the host’s contacts or the numbers of other people in the call.

No WhatsApp messaging channel
Guests cannot send messages to participants through WhatsApp from the guest call and cannot use the guest session as a normal WhatsApp conversation. A guest also cannot add another person directly to the call.
Names are not authentication
The browser name is an introduction label, not an identity check. If a meeting is sensitive, confirm the person’s identity verbally or through a separate trusted channel before discussing confidential information.
Can someone join if they have the link?
They can attempt to join
Yes. WhatsApp says that anyone with a call link can join the call, which is why it recommends sharing links only with people you trust. Possessing the URL lets someone open the joining flow and appear in the waiting room.
They still need host approval
A person with the URL cannot bypass the waiting room. The host’s approval is required for every guest entry. If the host does not recognize the name, the safe action is to deny the request.

Links can be revoked
If a link has been forwarded or exposed, revoke it and issue a new one using WhatsApp’s call-link controls. Revocation is preferable to relying on the old URL remaining secret.
Unused links expire after 30 days
WhatsApp’s Help Center documentation says an unused call link expires after 30 days. That is an inactivity limit, not a guarantee that a link is harmless during its active period. A link that has already been used should still be treated as shareable until it is revoked or otherwise replaced.
Why forwarding is the main link risk
A link can be copied from a message, calendar invite, browser history or screenshot. The approval gate limits the damage, but it does not prevent repeated join attempts or impersonation with a misleading name. Share links through a channel where the recipient list is controlled, and avoid posting them in public or broadly searchable spaces.

The Protect IP address in calls setting
WhatsApp offers an optional setting named Protect IP address in calls. When enabled, calls are relayed through WhatsApp servers so the other participant cannot see your IP address. Meta Engineering describes the control as helping hide a participant’s location from other parties.

Group-call behavior
Group calls are relayed through WhatsApp servers by default. The relay is a separate privacy layer from the call’s content encryption: it addresses what network information another participant can learn, not what people can see or hear once they are admitted.
The quality trade-off
WhatsApp cautions that relaying can reduce call quality. If the setting is important for a sensitive one-to-one call, enable it before joining and check whether latency, picture quality or audio stability remains acceptable. If quality becomes unusable, decide whether the privacy benefit outweighs the communication problem before disabling the setting.
What IP protection does not do
IP relay does not hide the fact that you are participating, prevent a host from seeing the name you supplied as a guest, or stop an admitted participant from observing material you share. It also does not prevent someone from recording the conversation with another device or a screen recorder.
Encryption: what it protects and what it cannot
End-to-end encrypted call content
WhatsApp states that voice and video calls are end-to-end encrypted and have no time limits. Its Help Center also says that calls relayed through WhatsApp servers remain end-to-end encrypted, like other WhatsApp calls. Encryption protects the audio and video content while it travels between participants and the service infrastructure.
Encryption is not an anti-recording feature
Once a person is admitted, the call is presented to that person’s device. End-to-end encryption cannot stop an admitted participant from taking a screenshot, capturing shared content, recording the screen or using another phone to record the speakers. Treat every admitted participant as capable of preserving what they can see and hear.
Screen sharing changes the exposure
Screen sharing can reveal documents, browser tabs, notifications, account numbers or other windows that were not intended for the call. Close unrelated applications, hide notifications and share only the specific window needed for the conversation.
Host procedure for a safer guest call
- Prepare the invitation. Create the call link in WhatsApp and send it only through a trusted, access-controlled channel. Tell invitees what name they should use so unexpected labels are easier to spot.
- Enable the approval gate. When WhatsApp offers Require approval to join, turn it on for any link that could be forwarded or seen by people outside the intended group.
- Check the waiting room. Review each displayed name before admission. Ask for a confirmation phrase or verify the person through a separate channel if the call is confidential.
- Admit selectively. Approve only expected participants. Do not admit a second attempt simply because the person claims to be an invitee; verify the identity first.
- Monitor the call. Watch for unexpected screen sharing, audio or video behavior. Remind participants not to display passwords, private documents or notifications.
- Remove mistakes quickly. Use the host control to remove a guest who is not authorized or who should no longer be present.
- Retire exposed links. If the URL appears in the wrong place, revoke it and distribute a replacement rather than continuing to use a compromised invitation.
Guest procedure for protecting your own privacy
- Inspect the invitation. Confirm who sent the link and what meeting you are expected to join. Do not open a forwarded URL from an unknown source.
- Use a meaningful name. Enter a name the host can recognize, while avoiding unnecessary personal details in the label.
- Expect the waiting room. Remain there until the host approves you. If someone asks you to bypass approval or provide unrelated credentials, leave the page.
- Check your surroundings. Before enabling the camera or microphone, remove private material from view and use headphones if nearby people could overhear.
- Limit screen sharing. Share only the required window and pause sharing before opening email, password managers, financial pages or private files.
- Consider IP protection. Enable Protect IP address in calls when preventing the other participant from seeing your IP address matters more than the possible reduction in call quality.
- Assume visible content can persist. Do not say or show anything that you would not want an admitted participant to record independently.
Common situations and the right response

Privacy limits to keep in mind
- Approval is a human control. It works only if the host checks requests instead of approving everyone automatically.
- A guest name can be misleading. The feature does not turn a typed browser name into verified identification.
- Link security depends on distribution. A secure-looking URL is still an invitation for anyone who obtains it to attempt entry.
- Content privacy ends at the participant’s device. Encryption protects transmission, not what an admitted participant chooses to save.
- IP privacy and content privacy are different. Server relay can conceal an IP address from another caller while the caller can still see and hear the meeting.
- Browser participation is accountless, not anonymous. The host sees the guest’s chosen name and controls whether that person enters the call.
Bottom line for hosts and guests
WhatsApp guest calls are designed to let accountless participants join without exposing a participant phone-number directory or opening a WhatsApp chat. The host is the gatekeeper: every guest waits for approval, and an admitted guest can be removed. The main risks are a forwarded link, an unverified name, inadvertent screen exposure and participant-side recording. Use the approval control, revoke links that escape your intended audience, and enable IP relay when concealing your address is worth the possible quality trade-off.
