Wearable technology is advancing, but not all at the same pace: smartwatches already dominate ownership, while smart glasses are drawing interest and shipping in greater numbers. That momentum does not yet prove people will wear camera-equipped glasses every day or that they will become a trusted alternative to phones. The next phase depends on whether these devices can deliver a useful everyday job without making comfort, privacy, or social acceptance a deal-breaker.
What the latest numbers say—and what they do not
Three different measures help explain the gap between wearable interest and established use. They should not be treated as interchangeable: consumer ownership and intentions, survey interest, and manufacturer shipments describe different things.
| Measure | Finding | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Wearable ownership and intent | NielsenIQ reported in 2026 that 65% of adults were wearable owners or intenders. Smartwatches dominated current ownership, while smart rings and smart glasses drew more interest than their current ownership levels. | Interest in emerging categories is ahead of ownership; the 65% combines owners and people who intend to buy. |
| US smart-glasses interest or ownership | In a Q3 2026 survey of 2,532 US online adults, more than four in ten said they were interested in or already owned smart glasses, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence Kagan. | This is a combined interest-and-ownership measure, not the share who currently own glasses. |
| Global smart-glasses shipments | IDC estimated approximately 2.25 million shipments in Q1 2026, up 167% year over year. | Shipments measure units moving into the market, not unique users, repeat use, or satisfaction. |
| Global smart-glasses outlook | IDC forecast approximately 13.6 million shipments in 2026 and 27.3 million in 2030. | These are forecasts, not realized shipment totals. |
The figures point to real momentum, especially for glasses, but not yet to a settled wearable future. A person can express interest without buying a device; a shipment does not show whether its owner keeps using it. Those gaps matter more than a headline growth rate when the question is whether a new form factor will become part of daily life.

Not all smart glasses are trying to do the same thing
Meta’s product framing distinguishes camera AI glasses, display AI glasses, and AR glasses. Those labels are useful for understanding the design choices, but they are Meta’s categories rather than a universal standard.
Camera AI glasses
These glasses use cameras and microphones for functions such as capturing content or interacting with an AI assistant. They do not need to put a visual interface in front of the wearer’s eye. Their appeal depends on whether hands-free capture or assistance is valuable enough to justify wearing conspicuous sensors in public.

Display AI glasses
Display models add visual information, whether through a lens or another display arrangement. That can make them more useful for glances at directions, messages, or other information, but it also adds design and interface challenges: the display must be readable and useful without becoming distracting or uncomfortable.
AR glasses
Augmented-reality glasses aim to place digital content in the wearer’s view in a more spatially integrated way. This is a more ambitious direction than adding a camera or a small display. Meta described Orion as a prototype and said it was working on a consumer version; that announcement does not establish that a consumer Orion product is generally available.

Meta’s categories and Orion status are described in its September 2025 announcement. A prototype can show a company’s direction, but it is not evidence that a finished product has solved comfort, utility, or price for everyday buyers.
Why smartwatches feel established while glasses remain experimental
The wrist is a familiar place for a device that tracks activity, shows notifications, or supports quick interactions. Glasses occupy a more socially visible position: they sit on the face, may include cameras and microphones, and are worn around other people. That changes the adoption test. A feature can be technically impressive yet fail if people do not want to wear the device all day or if bystanders cannot tell when it is recording.

Omdia Research Director Jason Low identified both concerns in an analyst assessment published on 16 September 2025: “Unlike wrist-worn wearable band devices, AI glasses encounter challenges such as privacy concerns from built-in cameras and microphones, as well as social resistance to all-day wear.” This is an analyst’s view of adoption barriers, not a regulatory finding. Omdia’s release forecast 5.1 million AI-glasses shipments in 2025 and more than 10 million in 2026; those were forecasts made in 2025, not observed shipment results, so IDC’s later Q1 2026 estimate is the more current market indicator here.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteComfort also has a practical dimension. Glasses must work as eyewear, not just as electronics: weight, fit, battery needs, lens choices, and the wearer’s existing prescription all affect whether a device can stay on through an ordinary day. The available market figures do not answer how often owners use their glasses or how many continue after the novelty wears off.

Camera-equipped glasses raise a straightforward trust problem: people nearby may not know whether a wearer is recording. Microphones add another dimension because the device may be listening for commands or processing audio. Visible recording indicators and clear controls can help, but their presence alone does not establish that bystanders will understand or accept how a device works.
The UK Information Commissioner’s Office has framed smart glasses as both a privacy and a public-trust challenge, while also recognizing their potential to support independence for people with visual impairment. That balance matters: treating glasses only as surveillance hardware overlooks possible accessibility uses, while presenting accessibility as a blanket answer to privacy concerns ignores the experience of people being recorded without their knowledge. The ICO statement is a regulator’s perspective, not proof that any particular product is safe, effective, or broadly accepted.

What would move wearables beyond the experimental stage?
Smart glasses do not need to replace phones to become useful. They need a repeatable task for which wearing glasses is meaningfully better than taking out a phone, using a watch, or doing nothing. Hands-free capture, quick contextual assistance, or accessibility support could qualify for particular people, but broad adoption depends on the value being clear in ordinary routines.
- A convincing everyday job: The device should solve a frequent problem, not merely demonstrate a novel feature.
- Comfort that lasts: Weight, fit, battery life, and compatibility with the wearer’s eyewear needs have to work beyond a brief trial.
- Legible privacy cues: Wearers and bystanders need understandable signals and controls around capture and audio.
- Social acceptance: People must feel comfortable wearing the device around others, and others must feel able to respond to it.
- Evidence beyond shipments: Repeat use, retention, and satisfaction would show whether interest turns into a durable habit.
Today’s evidence establishes category momentum and consumer curiosity, but it does not settle those tests. Smartwatches remain the clearest example of wearables becoming normal ownership; smart glasses are the more visible experiment, and display-based AR remains a further step rather than an inevitable next product.
