Several DIY computer boards have stronger headline compute specifications than Raspberry Pi 5: they pair four Cortex-A76 cores with four Cortex-A55 cores, and some add a GPU and an AI accelerator. Four examples are Radxa ROCK 5B, Orange Pi 5 Plus, Orange Pi 5 Pro, and Radxa ROCK 5A. That hardware can offer more multicore capacity and specialized acceleration, but it does not prove that every application will run faster than on Raspberry Pi 5.

What “more powerful” means for these boards

Raspberry Pi 5 has a 2.4 GHz quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 CPU, according to Raspberry Pi Ltd.’s 2023 launch announcement. The four alternatives below use processors with four Cortex-A76 cores plus four Cortex-A55 cores. Their manufacturers also specify Mali-G610-family graphics and an NPU rated up to 6 TOPS, though exact features vary by model.

That is a comparison of hardware specifications, not a universal performance ranking. More CPU cores may help workloads that can use them; an NPU helps only when the software, drivers, and model support it. Memory, storage, cooling, operating system, and configuration also affect results. Raspberry Pi’s product information lists first-party Raspberry Pi OS as an option, while each alternative has its own software ecosystem and board-specific support considerations (Raspberry Pi 5 product information).

Four DIY board alternatives

Radxa ROCK 5B

Radxa’s ROCK 5B documentation specifies an RK3588 with four Cortex-A76 cores running up to 2.4 GHz, four Cortex-A55 cores, Mali-G610 graphics, and an NPU rated up to 6 TOPS. The documentation lists LPDDR5 memory options up to 32 GB and four display outputs. Check the particular configuration and board revision for the connectivity you need.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Orange Pi 5 Plus

The Orange Pi 5 Plus product page lists the RK3588, four Cortex-A76 cores up to 2.4 GHz, four Cortex-A55 cores, Mali-G610 graphics, and an NPU rated up to 6 TOPS. Orange Pi lists 4 GB, 8 GB, and 16 GB memory options, an eMMC socket, and operating-system options including Orange Pi OS, Android, Debian, and Ubuntu. Verify the selected board’s storage and operating-system support before buying or building around it.

Orange Pi 5 Pro

The Orange Pi 5 Pro user manual describes an RK3588S with four Cortex-A76 and four Cortex-A55 cores, Mali-G610 graphics, and an NPU rated up to 6 TOPS. It lists 4 GB, 8 GB, and 16 GB LPDDR5 configurations and an M.2 M-key PCIe 2.0 x1 SSD slot. Confirm the interface and supported drive for the exact board configuration; an M.2 connector alone does not establish that every NVMe drive is compatible.

Radxa ROCK 5A

Radxa’s ROCK 5A documentation lists an A76/A55 octa-core CPU, Mali-G610 MP4 graphics, and an NPU rated up to 6 TOPS. It is another compact option in the same broad compute class. Its exact memory configuration and connectivity should be checked against your planned use rather than inferred from another ROCK 5 model.

How to choose the right board for your workload

For CPU-heavy multitasking

The eight-core layout is a useful specification to consider when software can distribute work across cores. It is not a guarantee of better performance in lightly threaded applications, nor does core count alone account for clock behavior, cooling, or software optimization. Match benchmark results to the same application and comparable board configurations if performance is decisive.

Anker USB C Hub, 7in1 Multi-Port USB Adapter, 4K@60Hz USBC to HDMI Splitter
  • Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
  • Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
  • Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

For graphics or AI workloads

The Mali-G610-family GPU and vendor-rated 6 TOPS NPU are potential advantages for supported workloads, not a promise of a particular frame rate or inference speed. Confirm that the operating system, driver, runtime, model format, and precision mode support the specific accelerator. TOPS is a vendor compute rating; it cannot be translated directly into an application-level speedup.

For storage, displays, and expansion

Compare the exact board’s documented interfaces with your build. ROCK 5B documentation notes four display outputs; Orange Pi 5 Plus lists an eMMC socket; Orange Pi 5 Pro’s manual specifies an M.2 M-key PCIe 2.0 x1 SSD slot. These features are not interchangeable, and a board’s named family is not enough to establish the ports on a particular revision.

For operating-system and driver support

Check available OS images and the state of support for the peripherals and accelerators you intend to use. Orange Pi lists Orange Pi OS, Android, Debian, and Ubuntu for the 5 Plus, while the alternative boards may differ in image availability and maturity. Raspberry Pi 5 has Raspberry Pi OS as a first-party option. Software support can change, so consult the board maker’s current documentation for your chosen model.

What benchmark evidence can—and cannot—show

A third-party comparison page reports Geekbench 6 results for Raspberry Pi 5, Orange Pi 5B, and ROCK 5B (sbc.compare’s comparison). It does not test all four boards in this article in one matched comparison, so it cannot establish a complete ranking among them. Benchmark scores are meaningful only with their board configurations and test conditions in view; they should not be generalized to every application or operating system.
