Short answer: There is no single confirmed cause. U.S. studies show that some cancers—including breast, colorectal, kidney, uterine and pancreatic cancers—have become more common in particular younger age groups, while other cancers have declined. The combined cancer rate for younger people has not risen consistently across every period studied. Researchers are examining changing risk factors, earlier or more intensive detection, and changes in diagnosis and coding.
That distinction matters. “Younger adults” can mean adolescents and young adults ages 15–39, or people under 50. A trend in one definition, cancer site or decade cannot be treated as proof that cancer overall is broadly increasing in all young people.
First, define “younger adults” and “rising”
Age and time window change the answer. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) groups people under 50 into ages 15–29, 30–39 and 40–49 in its 2025 early-onset analysis. Its adolescent and young adult (AYA) statistics cover ages 15–39. The NCI Early-Onset Cancer Initiative describes cancers diagnosed at ages 18–49 that are usually found later in life. These are related but not interchangeable populations.

Incidence is the number of new diagnoses; mortality is the number of deaths. A higher incidence can reflect more disease, more testing, or both.

Age remains the strongest overall predictor of cancer. NCI reports a median age at diagnosis of 67 using U.S. SEER data through 2022. The issue is therefore a shift in selected cancers affecting younger age bands—not that cancer has become more common in young people than in older adults generally.
What the major U.S. analysis actually found
An NCI-led study examined 33 cancer types in U.S. data from 2010 through 2019, with mortality followed through 2022. Incidence increased for 14 cancer types in at least one age group under 50. Incidence for 19 other types, including lung and prostate cancer, decreased in at least one under-50 age group. When all cancer types were combined, the total incidence rate did not increase in younger or older age groups, and the total cancer death rate did not increase.
Nine of the 14 cancer types that increased in at least one younger age group also increased in at least one age group over 50. That overlap argues against a simple explanation in which a factor affects only young adults.

Estimated additional diagnoses in 2019
The study estimated how many diagnoses occurred in 2019 beyond the number expected if 2010 rates had continued unchanged. These are modeled one-year case counts, not percentage increases and not proof of a cause.

“Additional” does not mean that these cases were caused by a newly emerging exposure. It is the difference between observed diagnoses and a statistical counterfactual. The estimate also does not say that every person in a younger age group faces the same risk.
Why newer reports can appear to disagree
Different summaries can all be accurate when they use different ages, years and measures. NCI’s AYA page reports average annual incidence growth of 0.3% for ages 15–39 over 2013–2022, with death rates falling over 2014–2023. The NCI Annual Report to the Nation, published in September 2026, says overall AYA incidence for ages 15–39 was stable from 2018–2022, while cancer death rates declined by about 1% per year on average from 2004–2023.

Before comparing a headline with another headline, check four labels: the age range, the calendar years, whether the number is incidence or mortality, and whether it covers one cancer or all cancers combined.
What could be driving increases in particular cancers?
Investigators describe several plausible categories rather than one established explanation. The balance of evidence differs by cancer type and age group.

Risk factors may be appearing earlier
Some exposures associated with cancer may be becoming more common, or may be affecting people at younger ages than in previous generations. NCI investigators have discussed obesity and heavier alcohol consumption among possible contributors. These factors cannot account automatically for every cancer that increased, and an association in a population does not establish that it caused an individual diagnosis.
A 2024 study summarized in an NCI obesity fact sheet found that six of nine obesity-related cancer types increased among young adults worldwide from 2000 through 2012. Increases in body weight were associated with increases in colon, rectal, pancreatic and kidney cancers. This supports a possible connection for some sites; it does not demonstrate that obesity explains all early-onset cancer trends or account for changes in breast, uterine or other cancers by itself.
Screening and detection can change the timing of diagnosis
More testing, improved imaging, genetic evaluation, or greater attention to symptoms can find cancers that previously would have been diagnosed later—or not recorded at all. A rise in incidence after detection practices change can therefore reflect earlier identification, a real increase in underlying disease, or a combination.

Detection effects are likely to vary by cancer. A change in screening for one site cannot explain a simultaneous pattern across unrelated sites, and the absence of a formal screening program does not mean detection is unchanged. Diagnostic technology and clinical awareness evolve outside organized screening programs too.

Diagnosis and coding practices can affect the statistics
Medical classification systems, registry procedures and clinical coding are updated over time. If a condition is classified differently or recorded more completely, measured incidence can move even when the underlying biology changes less. This is one reason researchers examine trends by site, age and period rather than attributing every increase to a single exposure.
Environmental and microbiome hypotheses remain under study
Researchers are investigating environmental exposures and changes in the human microbiome as possible contributors. These ideas are biologically plausible areas for research, but NCI coverage emphasizes that evidence for many proposed individual links is not strong enough to identify a definitive cause. A hypothesis should not be presented as an established explanation merely because it is being studied.

The cancers showing increases do not share one complete risk profile, and several also increased in older adults. Their latency periods, screening practices, inherited susceptibility, treatments and coding histories differ. A factor that changes colorectal risk may not explain a kidney trend, and a detection change may affect incidence without changing mortality.

How to judge a proposed explanation
When a study or article names a possible cause, evaluate it on four dimensions:
- Cancer and age specificity: Does the evidence concern the same cancer site and age band as the reported increase?
- Evidence directness: Is it based on a measured exposure and subsequent disease, or only on a correlation between population trends?
- Underlying risk versus diagnosis timing: Could the factor cause more disease, or could it simply make existing disease visible sooner?
- Geography and period: Do the exposure and cancer data come from the same country and years?
A convincing explanation should fit the timing, magnitude and distribution of a cancer-specific trend and survive adjustment for competing explanations. Broad claims that one behavior or product caused “the rise in cancer” do not meet that standard.
What the mortality numbers add
Incidence and mortality answer different questions. The NCI early-onset analysis found no increase in the total cancer death rate across the younger age groups examined through 2022. The later AYA report found deaths declining about 1% per year on average from 2004 through 2023. Improvements in treatment, earlier diagnosis, or both can reduce mortality even while incidence for a particular cancer rises.

More diagnoses can mean more people need treatment, survivorship care and long-term monitoring. Conversely, a stable aggregate incidence can conceal increases in one cancer offset by decreases in another.
What is established—and what remains unknown
Established by the current evidence
- Some cancer types have increased in particular U.S. age groups under 50, while others have decreased.
- The largest modeled excess case counts in 2019 involved female breast, colorectal, kidney, uterine and pancreatic cancers.
- Several cancers that increased in younger groups also increased in at least one older group.
- Aggregate AYA incidence was stable from 2018–2022 in the 2026 national report, and AYA mortality has declined over longer periods.
- Age, years, geography and the choice of incidence or mortality measure materially change the result.
Not established
- There is no confirmed single cause for all increases among younger adults.
- The modeled additional-case counts are not causal estimates.
- Obesity, alcohol, environmental exposures, microbiome changes, screening or coding changes cannot each be treated as the universal explanation.
- The 2010–2019 site-specific analysis does not establish the latest trend for every cancer after its endpoints.
What this means for readers
Population statistics cannot determine why one person developed cancer or predict an individual’s risk. A younger age does not eliminate risk, but a news report about rising diagnoses does not mean that cancer is now more common than in older adults. Personal risk depends on factors such as family history, inherited conditions, previous treatments, exposures and symptoms.
Use age- and risk-appropriate screening guidance from a qualified clinician, and discuss persistent or unusual symptoms rather than assuming they are explained by age. Do not use population trends as a reason to take unproven supplements, buy diagnostic devices or change treatment without medical advice. The most accurate conclusion from current U.S. data is narrower: selected cancers are changing in selected younger age groups, and researchers are still determining how much reflects biology, exposure, detection and record-keeping.
