Your TV’s threaded coaxial port is an RF input for an antenna signal or, with compatible equipment, a cable box. It is not an Ethernet jack. But the coax wiring already installed around your home may carry a wired network connection using MoCA adapters, which can provide Ethernet near a TV or other device.
What the coaxial port on your TV is for
A port labeled ANT IN, ANT/CABLE, or Cable/Antenna accepts radio-frequency (RF) signals. The usual connection is a coax cable from an antenna, so the TV’s tuner can receive over-the-air broadcasts. Whether you can receive channels depends on the TV’s tuner, the available signal, and local reception.
A compatible cable box can also send an RF signal to the TV through this port. In Philips’ legacy example, the cable feed goes to the box, and the box’s RF output connects to the TV’s Cable/Antenna input. The viewer selects channel 3 or 4 on the box and tunes the TV to the same channel. This is an older hookup method, not a guarantee that every current box or provider supports it. Philips recommends using a direct audio/video output when available because it provides better picture quality.
When you connect a box to the TV by HDMI or another direct audio/video connection, you bypass that older RF channel-modulation path. The coax input does not establish which broadcast standards the TV supports or whether a provider supplies usable channels over its RF output.

- Faster than Wi-Fi: The ECB7250 uses your home's coax cables to deliver internet speeds up to 2.5 Gbps, surpassing Wi-Fi speeds. Actual speeds can be affected by various factors like cable quality and other MoCA devices on the network.
- Get the Best Speeds and Bandwidth: The 2.5Gbps network ethernet port for high-speed internet is ideal for 4K streaming, gaming, and remote work. It's backwards compatible with 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet connections.
- Skip the Wi-Fi! Use existing coax cables for wired Ethernet connections in your home. MoCA Adapter 2.5 delivers faster, more reliable speeds than Wi-Fi for up to 16 nodes on one network. You can also use these to connect remote Wi-Fi access points.
- Check MoCA Compatibility: You will need 1 ECB or a MoCA compatible router or 2+ ECBs for non-MoCA routers. Most FiOS routers have MoCA built-in. Connect ECBs in each room with coax for wired access and switches to the ECBs for more ethernet connections.
- Device Compatibility: This MoCA adapter for ethernet over coax works with most devices and routers with an ethernet port. However, some DOCSIS 3.1 modems might conflict (frequency overlap) and cause random disconnects. Check with your ISP for a fix.
Can your TV’s coax port provide internet?
Not by itself. The TV’s antenna/cable input is for RF television signals; it does not convert coax into Ethernet. If you want a wired network connection by the TV, MoCA (Multimedia over Coax Alliance) equipment can use compatible coax wiring in the home to carry network traffic. An adapter bridges coax networking and Ethernet, so a smart TV, streaming device, game console, or computer can connect by Ethernet.
A typical arrangement uses a MoCA-capable router or a first adapter near the router, then another adapter at the coax outlet where you want Ethernet. If your router, gateway, or provider equipment already has MoCA, you may not need an adapter at that end. The MoCA Alliance describes MoCA 2.5 as having 2.5 Gbps MAC throughput; that is a technology-level throughput figure, not a promise of internet speed at a device. Motorola notes that actual rates can be lower due to coax and splitter losses, slower adapters, or a slower internet service.

- ⚠️ NETWORK ADAPTER - NOT A MODEM OR ROUTER: This device extends your EXISTING internet through your home's coax cables. It works WITH your current modem and router, not as a replacement. Connects to your router via Ethernet, then uses coax outlets to create wired network connections in other rooms. Perfect for streaming, gaming, and home offices where you need reliable wired connections.
- 🚨 DOES NOT WORK WITH AT&T U-VERSE OR SATELLITE TV WIRING: ❌ AT&T U-verse uses HPNA technology which conflicts with MoCA - this product will NOT work with U-verse service. ❌ If your home was EVER wired for DirecTV, Dish Network, or AT&T U-verse satellite service, MoCA will HIGHLY LIKELY NOT WORK. Satellite/U-verse installations reconfigure coax wiring by isolating outlets or disconnecting them from the main splitter. Even if you no longer have these services, the wiring changes usually remain.
- ✅ COMPATIBLE INTERNET SERVICES - IF COAX IS PROPERLY WIRED: Works with Cable internet (Comcast/Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox, Optimum, Mediacom), Fiber internet (Verizon Fios, Google Fiber, Frontier Fiber), DSL, or other non-U-verse services. Your internet type doesn't matter - what matters is that your coax outlets are interconnected through a main splitter (standard cable TV configuration, NOT satellite or U-verse wiring). Delivers up to 1 Gbps speeds.
- 🔌 REQUIRED: INTERCONNECTED COAX NETWORK: All coax outlets must connect to a central splitter for MoCA to work. ❌ WILL NOT WORK with: AT&T U-verse service (uses conflicting HPNA technology), Satellite TV wiring (DirecTV/Dish/U-verse satellite), isolated coax runs not connected to a splitter, or homes with no coax outlets. ✅ COMPATIBILITY TEST: If you previously had traditional cable TV service and could watch TV from multiple room outlets, your wiring is likely compatible.
- 🔧 POE FILTER - CABLE INTERNET USERS ONLY: If you have cable internet with a DOCSIS 3.1 or 4.0 "high-split" modem (common with Comcast/Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox), you MUST install a Point of Entry (POE) filter at your main cable entry point or MoCA will NOT function properly. The filter prevents interference from high-split cable modems. Fiber internet and DSL users do NOT need a POE filter. U-verse users cannot use this product regardless of filter.
Choose the connection that matches what you need
| Use | What connects to the coax | What it provides | Key checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| TV RF input | An antenna lead or a compatible cable box’s RF output | An RF signal for the TV tuner | TV tuner and signal/provider compatibility; for a legacy box, match the TV and box to channel 3 or 4. Use direct audio/video output when available for better picture quality. |
| Home network over coax (MoCA) | A MoCA-enabled router/gateway or adapter, plus a room adapter as needed | An Ethernet connection for a TV, streamer, console, or computer | MoCA support, service-frequency compatibility, splitters and coax layout, and any applicable filter guidance. |
These are different uses of coax, not two ways to turn the TV’s RF input into an Ethernet port. Antenna TV and MoCA may coexist in some setups, but the right arrangement depends on the equipment and wiring.
Check compatibility before setting up MoCA
Confirm the service and equipment
Check the exact adapter, router or gateway model, and provider setup. Motorola’s MM1025 documentation says that model is designed for most coax networks used with cable TV, cable internet, and FiOS or another fiber network. It says the MM1025 is not designed for DirecTV, Dish, other satellite networks, AT&T Internet, or AT&T U-Verse because those services use conflicting frequencies. That is a limitation stated for this model, not a rule for every MoCA product.

- ⚠️ NOT A MODEM OR ROUTER - NETWORK ADAPTER ONLY: This is a MoCA network adapter that extends your existing network using coax cables. It does NOT provide internet service and does NOT replace your modem or router. You must have an existing internet connection and router to use this product.
- ⚠️ SATELLITE WIRING INCOMPATIBILITY: If your home was ever wired for satellite TV (DirecTV, Dish Network), the satellite company likely cut or disconnected your in-home coax network. This product will NOT work with cut or isolated coax wiring. Before purchasing, verify your coax outlets are interconnected—if you previously had satellite service, ask your current provider if they reconnected your home’s coax network.
- ❌ NOT COMPATIBLE WITH AT&T FIBER: AT&T Fiber’s implementation causes signal interference with MoCA. Works with all other internet types (Cable, Verizon Fios, Google Fiber, etc.) as long as your home has an active, interconnected coax network.
- ✅ WIRING REQUIREMENTS - VERIFY BEFORE BUYING: Requires coax outlets (round screw-on connectors, NOT satellite F-connectors) in multiple rooms that connect to a main splitter. Does NOT work with isolated coax runs, phone lines (RJ11), or Ethernet cables. Check that your coax outlets are part of an interconnected network, not separate isolated runs
- EXTENDS YOUR NETWORK: Converts your home’s coax cable wiring into high-speed ethernet connections. Perfect for connecting devices in rooms far from your router without running new cables. Achieves up to 2.5 Gbps speeds over existing coax. WORKS WITH: Cable internet (Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox, etc.) and most fiber services (Verizon Fios, Google Fiber, etc.).
Some provider equipment and gateways already support MoCA. Verify the capabilities of your actual equipment before buying adapters; a listing in the MoCA Alliance certified-products directory does not, by itself, establish that a product is available now or compatible with your home.
Check the coax layout and splitters
The coax outlet in the room must connect through wiring that can carry MoCA traffic to the other MoCA device. Splitter frequency range and branch layout can affect the connection. Motorola describes using a MoCA-ready subnetwork when the entire coax system is not ready, and testing coax runs with two adapters. Identify your wiring and service needs before changing splitters; replacing every splitter is not a universal first step.

- Faster than Wi-Fi: Use your home’s coax cables for internet speeds up to 1 Gbps, perhaps outpacing Wi-Fi. With multiple adapters and a native MoCA router, MoCA speeds can reach 2.5 Gbps. Speed may vary due to cable quality and other MoCA devices.
- Get Better Speeds and Bandwidth: The 1Gbps ethernet port and network card for high-speed internet is ideal for 4K streaming, gaming, and working from home. If your devices don't have a 1Gbps Network Card, it's backwards compatible with 10/100 Mbps network devices.
- Check MoCA Compatibility: You will need 1 ECB or a MoCA compatible router or 2+ for non-MoCA routers.
Account for antenna TV and network isolation
TiVo says MoCA can coexist with over-the-air TV on home coax. Its instructions call for a point-of-entry filter in specific TiVo BOLT configurations. A filter can help keep MoCA signals from reaching outside wiring, reduce conflicts with other networks, and improve performance, but whether and where one is appropriate depends on your equipment and topology. Follow the instructions for your system rather than treating one product’s filter guidance as universal.

What to look for if you need Ethernet by the TV
The relevant device is a MoCA Ethernet over coax adapter, not a cable that plugs the TV’s coax port directly into a router. First check whether your router or gateway already provides MoCA, then confirm that the service and coax wiring support the adapter you choose. At the TV end, Ethernet from the room adapter can connect to the TV or to another wired device.
