A router USB port can do more than sit unused—but only if your exact router model and firmware support the feature. Depending on the device, it may share files, serve media, share a printer, or connect a cellular modem for internet access or failover. Check the router’s model, hardware revision, manual, and compatibility limits before plugging anything in.
1. Share files from a USB drive
On supported routers, a USB flash drive or external drive can act as a shared network folder for people on the wired or wireless local network. Router settings may let you choose folders, set authentication, and control whether users can write files as well as read them. TP-Link describes this feature as sharing files on a USB drive with wired or wireless users on the same network in its USB storage-sharing guide, updated August 24, 2024.
Some supported GL.iNet routers offer file access through Samba or WebDAV; available services depend on the model and firmware. See the GL.iNet Network Storage documentation. A router share is convenient for moving or opening files on your home network, but do not assume it is accessible from outside the home: remote access options vary by router.

Some routers can scan media on a connected drive and make it available to compatible clients over the network. ASUS documents UPnP media-server setup and an iTunes Server option for supported routers in its Media Server instructions, updated March 3, 2026. GL.iNet documents DLNA support on listed models, which can let a compatible smart TV discover the router’s media server.

This is basic network media serving, not a guarantee of a full media-center app or video transcoding. The sources describe DLNA, UPnP, or iTunes Server features; they do not establish that routers support every file format or can convert video for a device that cannot play the original file.
3. Share a USB printer
Some router models include a print-server feature, allowing computers on the local network to send print jobs to a connected USB printer. The D-Link Unified Services Router manual describes USB printer sharing for LAN hosts with the appropriate printer driver installed. That manual covers specified DSR models and is not evidence that a typical current consumer router supports printers.

Support can differ even when two routers both have a USB socket. NETGEAR’s ReadySHARE guidance says the referenced router’s port supports storage and excludes printers. Check the exact model’s manual before connecting a printer.
4. Use a cellular modem for internet access or failover
Some routers can use a compatible USB cellular modem as a WAN connection or backup when the main internet connection fails. The D-Link manual describes 3G modem support on specified DSR models, including secondary WAN, load-balancing, and failover uses. These are model-specific capabilities, not a general property of router USB ports.

- [Wifi 6 High-speed Transmission] - With WiFi 6 Technology and up to 900Mbps Speed (600 Mbps on 5 GHz band and 286 Mbps on 2.4 GHz band), the wifi adapter works well for 4K videos and games at ultra-high speed and low latency.
- [High-Speed Dual-Band Connectivity] - Operating on the WiFi 6 (802.11ax) standard, the AX900 USB WiFi adapter achieves maximum speeds of 600Mbps (5GHz) and 286Mbps (2.4GHz). Note: A WiFi 6 router is required to reach the combined AX900 speed rating.
- [Receive & Transmit Two-in-One] - By installing this wireless network card, a desktop computer can connect to a Wi-Fi network for internet access. Once connected, the computer can then use the same card to transmit a Wi-Fi signal and share its internet connection with other devices.
- [Stay Safe Online] - Keep your connection secure with advanced WPA and WPA2 encryption. For the strongest and most reliable signal, we recommend placing the WiFi Adapter for Desktop PC within 30 feet of your router.
- [Built-in Drivers for Quick Installation] - This wireless WiFi adapter is compatible with Windows 7, 10, and 11 (x86/x64 architectures). Drivers are pre-loaded on the device—simply plug it in, run the built-in setup file to install in just one click. Note: Not compatible with macOS, Linux, or Windows 8/8.1/XP.
Use a modem only if the router documentation lists the modem type and carrier support. NETGEAR’s cited ReadySHARE guidance explicitly says not to connect a USB modem to the referenced router, illustrating why the manual matters.
Check compatibility before connecting a device
- Confirm the exact model and hardware revision. A USB socket alone does not establish what it supports. TP-Link’s guide identifies applicable models and directs owners to model-specific product and firmware information.
- Check the firmware and feature list. Features can vary by model and firmware version; GL.iNet’s storage documentation lists supported router models and firmware notes.
- Verify drive format and capacity. ASUS recommends checking its router compatibility list and confirming that the router detects the drive.
- Account for power draw. GL.iNet warns that some USB hard drives draw enough power to malfunction without a separate power supply. A powered drive may be more suitable than expecting the router to power it.
- Set access deliberately. Where available, configure authentication and write permissions. A share that permits writing can allow users with access to change or delete files.
- Check whether access is local or remote. Do not assume a network share is reachable over the internet; remote-access features and setup differ by product.
- Safely remove a drive if the router offers that option. Drive-monitoring and removal features vary; ASUS explains its process in its drive monitoring FAQ.
What a router USB port is—and is not—a substitute for
A USB-connected drive can be a convenient shared location for files or media when your router supports it. It is not automatically a dedicated network-attached storage system: available protocols, access controls, remote access, and client compatibility depend on the router. Likewise, a media server feature does not by itself mean the router can transcode video, and a USB port does not guarantee printer or cellular-modem support.

If you want to try file sharing, a USB flash drive is a sensible first device on a supported router. For a larger external drive, verify format, capacity, and power requirements first. The cited manufacturer documentation provides setup and compatibility guidance, but does not offer a fair, controlled speed comparison across router models.
