Your phone’s Wi-Fi connection is a series of steps: it selects a network, establishes a wireless link with an access point, applies that network’s security, gets local network settings, and then routes app traffic. A connected Wi-Fi icon means the wireless link is up; it does not by itself prove that the internet is reachable or that every part of your traffic is private.

How your phone connects to Wi-Fi

The exact message sequence varies by phone, network, and security setup, but the process generally follows these stages.

1. It finds and chooses a network

With Wi-Fi enabled, the phone detects available networks and may automatically rejoin one it has used before. Android says a saved network can reconnect when the phone is nearby and Wi-Fi is on. On Apple devices, known networks are prioritized using a score affected by user actions, network category, and recency. The selection rules are platform-specific. Android’s connection guidance and Apple’s auto-join guidance describe these behaviors.

2. It establishes a wireless link

The phone and access point exchange IEEE 802.11 management frames to authenticate and associate. In this context, “authentication” names a protocol step; it does not necessarily mean the network has verified a person’s identity. A typical home network using a shared password follows a different authentication flow from an enterprise network, which may use 802.1X and EAP before key exchange. The IETF describes related protocol concepts in RFC 7458 and RFC 5416.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

3. The network’s security method is applied

Depending on the network’s configuration, a password or enterprise credential helps establish access and link keys. Wi-Fi security modes do not all provide the same protection: an open network may have no Wi-Fi link encryption. Apple cautions that disabling Wi-Fi security also disables authentication and encryption, allowing others to join and monitor transmitted data. See Apple’s router security guidance.

4. The phone receives local network settings

To communicate beyond the wireless link, the phone needs IP configuration and usually a default route and DNS resolver information. DHCP and IPv6 Router Advertisements are common ways for a network to provide configuration. RFC 9463 describes options for discovering network-designated encrypted DNS resolvers, including DNS over HTTPS, DNS over TLS, and DNS over QUIC. Which settings are available depends on the network and device. RFC 9463 covers these resolver-discovery options.

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54)
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

5. Apps send traffic over the configured route

When an app contacts an online service, the phone uses its configured route; a DNS lookup may happen first to find the service’s address. HTTPS/TLS can protect application data in transit between the phone and the service. That protection is separate from Wi-Fi security, and the Wi-Fi connection alone does not guarantee that every app’s traffic is encrypted.

Why joining Wi-Fi does not always mean the internet works

A phone can establish a wireless link and still lack working internet access if it has not received usable network settings or if the network has an outage or other restriction. Some public and managed networks also require a captive-portal step, such as signing in or accepting terms, before ordinary internet access is allowed. The Wi-Fi connection and the ability to reach an online service are therefore distinct stages.

What the Wi-Fi network and other observers can see

The local network handles information needed to connect and route traffic, including the phone’s current network address and traffic metadata. What an observer can read depends on where they can observe the traffic and which protections are in use. Wi-Fi link encryption protects the wireless hop on supported secure networks; HTTPS/TLS protects app data between the phone and a service; encrypted DNS protects DNS questions and answers when configured and successfully used. None of those protections makes the access point or network operator inherently trustworthy.

A Wi-Fi MAC address identifies an interface at the link layer. Phones can use a randomized or private address instead of exposing the same hardware address on every network. Google says devices running Android 10 and later have another address and explains how to view the randomized MAC address; Apple documents Private Wi-Fi Address in its Wi-Fi guidance. Controls and behavior vary by OS version and network. Android’s settings guidance is available at Manage advanced network settings.

Protection or setup What it addresses What it does not establish
Wi-Fi link encryption Traffic on the wireless hop between the phone and access point, when the network uses a supported secure configuration. It does not guarantee that all traffic beyond the access point is encrypted.
HTTPS/TLS Application data in transit between the phone and the service using HTTPS/TLS. It does not encrypt every app’s traffic or, by itself, hide DNS lookups.
Encrypted DNS DNS questions and answers when an encrypted resolver is configured and used. It does not encrypt other app traffic. Google states: “Private DNS helps secure only DNS questions and answers. It can’t protect anything else.” (Google Android Help.)
Enterprise credentials Access authentication using an enterprise network’s configured method, which may use 802.1X/EAP. They are not the same setup as a shared household Wi-Fi password, and they do not replace application-level protections.

Practical checks for public and shared networks

  • Use apps and sites that use HTTPS, and keep the phone’s Wi-Fi software current.
  • Do not treat a familiar network name as proof of who operates the access point.
  • Remember that a shared Wi-Fi password is shared access: on a network using the same pre-shared key for all clients, that key is available to those clients. Enterprise networks with unique credentials have a different authentication model.
  • Treat network-provided settings carefully. DHCP and Router Advertisements do not authenticate the information they supply, and RFC 9463 notes that wireless LANs face attacks.
  • If a public network opens a sign-in or terms page, complete its captive-portal step before concluding that general internet access is available.

What determines the exact connection behavior?

There is no single flow that describes every phone and Wi-Fi network. Selection behavior depends on the platform; authentication and key setup depend on whether the network is open, uses a shared password, or uses enterprise credentials; and IP, DNS, and privacy settings depend on the network and device configuration. The IETF references describe protocol concepts, not a guarantee that every phone or access point uses the same exact message flow. Platform instructions can also change over time.
