You can stream PS4 games to an Android phone or tablet with the free PS Remote Play app, a PS4 configured for Remote Play, the same PlayStation account on both devices, a compatible game, and a suitable internet connection. Android 9 or later supports the app’s on-screen controls. A separate controller is optional: PlayStation lists DUALSHOCK 4 Bluetooth support from Android 10 and DualSense support from Android 12. PlayStation publishes 5 Mbps as the minimum connection speed and recommends 15 Mbps for a better experience.
The phone and console do not run the game together. The PS4 runs the game and sends the video and audio stream to Android; commands from the phone or controller travel back to the console. That means console configuration, account matching, game compatibility, and network quality all matter.
What do you need to stream PS4 games to Android?
Use this checklist before trying to connect:
- A PS4 with Remote Play enabled and current system software.
- An Android smartphone or tablet running Android 9 or later for on-screen controls.
- The free official PS Remote Play app installed from your device’s app store.
- The same PlayStation account signed in on the PS4 and in the mobile app.
- A PS4 game that does not require excluded VR or specialized peripherals.
- An internet connection meeting PlayStation’s published thresholds: at least 5 Mbps, with 15 Mbps recommended for a better experience.
- Optional controls: the phone’s touch controls, a supported DUALSHOCK 4, a supported DualSense, or a compatible Backbone One – PlayStation Edition.
PlayStation’s PS Remote Play overview describes these device, controller, and connection requirements. The app and basic Remote Play setup do not require buying a separate streaming subscription or controller.

Android version for touch controls
PlayStation lists Android smartphones and tablets running Android 9 or later for Remote Play with the app’s on-screen controls. Touch support is therefore the simplest way to test the service: install the app, sign in, and try a game before spending money on an accessory.

Android version numbers are only one part of compatibility. Manufacturers can change Bluetooth drivers, USB behavior, screen cutouts, power management, and permission handling. If a controller fails even though the Android version is high enough, check the handset maker’s support information for that exact model and update Android and the controller firmware where applicable.

These are PlayStation’s stated compatibility thresholds, not a guarantee for every handset. A phone can meet the Android requirement and still have a connector, case, driver, or firmware issue. PlayStation identifies the Backbone One – PlayStation Edition as an optional compatible phone controller; it is not required for Remote Play.
Do you need a controller?
No. Android 9 or later can use the virtual controls displayed by PS Remote Play. Touch controls are enough to complete setup and work for games designed around relatively simple inputs. They can be less comfortable for long sessions, games that need two analog sticks, or titles where precise triggers and quick button combinations matter.

A physical controller is a comfort and control choice rather than a technical prerequisite. Try the free touch layout first if you are unsure. If you buy or already own a controller, compare it on four points: Android-version support, compatibility of your exact handset, how portable it is, and whether its controls suit the game.

Do not assume that every Bluetooth gamepad works with PS Remote Play simply because Android can pair with it. PlayStation specifically documents the controller families above. Generic controllers may not expose the button mapping the app expects.

What internet speed do you need for PS4 Remote Play?
PlayStation states that broadband internet with at least 5 Mbps is required. It recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better Remote Play experience, using either Wi-Fi or mobile data. These are official service guidelines from the PlayStation overview, checked in 2026, not independent benchmark results or a promise of a particular frame rate, latency, or image quality.
Remote Play needs a usable connection between the PS4 and the Android device. The result can vary with the network environment, congestion, carrier conditions, and the game. Measure the connection on the networks you actually plan to use rather than relying on a plan’s advertised maximum. PlayStation does not prescribe one universal router model, Wi-Fi band, or latency number for every setup.
Home Wi-Fi
For play inside the home, connect the phone to a stable Wi-Fi network and keep the PS4 online. A speed test can show whether the connection is near or above PlayStation’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation, but a single test is only a snapshot. Other devices uploading or downloading heavily can reduce the bandwidth available to Remote Play.
Mobile data
The app can use mobile data when you want to play away from Wi-Fi. Enable mobile-data use in the PS Remote Play app’s settings; otherwise, a phone connected to Wi-Fi continues using Wi-Fi. Streaming consumes your carrier’s data allowance and can incur charges or reduced service if you exceed the plan’s limit. Check the allowance and any tethering or streaming restrictions before starting a long session.
How to prepare the PS4
Configure the console before opening the Android app. The console must be reachable online and associated with the account you will use on the phone.

- Update the PS4. Install available system-software updates. PlayStation support guidance recommends using the latest system software when troubleshooting Remote Play.
- Enable Remote Play. On the PS4, open Settings, choose Remote Play Connection Settings, and turn on Enable Remote Play.
- Use the same PlayStation account. Sign in on the PS4 with the account that you will use in the mobile app. A different account can prevent the app from finding the console.
- Activate the PS4 as your primary console. PlayStation’s troubleshooting guidance identifies primary-console activation as a requirement for PS4 Remote Play. In the PS4 account settings, select the option to activate the console as your primary PS4, if it is not already active.
- Keep the console connected. The PS4 needs an internet connection while you play remotely. Confirm that it can reach PlayStation services and that the network connection test completes without an error.
- Configure Rest Mode for remote wake. If you want the app to wake the PS4 while it is in Rest Mode, open Settings > Power Save Settings > Set Functions Available in Rest Mode. Enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS4 from Network. Without these options, the console may need to be fully powered on before the phone can connect.
These console paths and account checks align with PlayStation’s Remote Play connection troubleshooting guidance. Menu wording can vary slightly by PS4 system-software version, but the functions have the same names.
How to connect a PS4 to an Android phone
Once the console is ready, use the mobile setup sequence documented by PlayStation.
- Install PS Remote Play. Download the free official app from your Android device’s app store. Avoid similarly named unofficial apps.
- Sign in. Open the app and sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the PS4.
- Choose PS4. Select the PS4 option in the app. It searches for the console associated with that account and attempts to connect.
- Allow the search to finish. The first connection can take time while the app locates and registers the console. Keep the PS4 online and awake, or make sure the Rest Mode network options are enabled.
- Accept any prompts. Follow Android permission prompts and the app’s instructions. If the app asks you to verify the console manually, follow the on-screen pairing instructions from the PS4.
- Select controls. Use the on-screen buttons, or pair a supported controller before or during the session.
- Test a short session. Start with a game you know well. Check whether input, sound, and picture remain usable before committing to a long mobile-data session.
PlayStation’s mobile-device instructions describe signing in, selecting PS4, and allowing the app to search for the console. The app’s exact screens can change with Android and app updates, but the account and console relationship remains essential.
Pairing a controller with Android
DUALSHOCK 4
Use Android’s Bluetooth settings to put the DUALSHOCK 4 into pairing mode, then select it from the list of available devices. PlayStation lists Bluetooth support from Android 10 or later. If the phone does not discover the controller, charge it, disconnect it from the PS4 or another device, reset its pairing state if necessary, and check the handset maker’s Bluetooth documentation.
DualSense
Pair the DualSense through Android’s Bluetooth settings. PlayStation lists Android 12 or later for DualSense support. The controller may function as a standard gamepad even when console-specific features are unavailable; the exact behavior depends on Android and the phone manufacturer.

Phone-attached controllers
For the Backbone One – PlayStation Edition, verify that the phone is an Android phone running Android 10.0 or above and that the physical connector fits the handset. Remove a thick case if it prevents the connector from seating. Confirm compatibility for the exact model before purchasing, because an Android version alone does not establish physical fit.
Which PS4 games work with Remote Play?
Remote Play does not make every PS4 title compatible. PlayStation excludes games that require PS VR, PS VR2, or additional peripherals beyond the supported controller types. A game that depends on a camera, motion hardware, a specialized instrument, or another accessory may therefore fail to start or may have unusable features.
Check the game’s own requirements when it relies on specialized hardware. Standard games controlled with the PS4 controller are the safest candidates, but individual titles or features can still have restrictions. If the app connects successfully but a particular game refuses to launch, treat game compatibility as a separate issue from the phone, account, and network setup.

The app cannot find the PS4
- Confirm that the PS4 is powered on or in Rest Mode with Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS4 from Network enabled.
- Verify that Remote Play is enabled in Settings > Remote Play Connection Settings.
- Sign out and back in with the same PlayStation account on both devices.
- Check that the PS4 is activated as your primary console.
- Restart the app, phone, and PS4, then retry the search.
- Install pending PS4 system-software and app updates.

The connection starts but drops
- Run a speed test on the network in use and compare it with PlayStation’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation.
- Stop large downloads, uploads, cloud backups, and high-bandwidth video streams on the same connection.
- Move the phone to a stronger Wi-Fi location or try a different network.
- If you are using mobile data, check signal quality, the remaining allowance, and any carrier restrictions.
- Test at another time if the connection is congested; an advertised speed does not guarantee consistent performance.
PlayStation says Remote Play quality and connectivity vary with the network environment, so meeting a speed threshold does not guarantee that every session will be stable.

The controller pairs but does not work correctly
- Check the Android threshold: Android 10 or later for DUALSHOCK 4, Android 12 or later for DualSense.
- Forget the controller in Bluetooth settings and pair it again.
- Disconnect it from another phone, tablet, or PS4 before pairing.
- Update the phone and controller where updates are available.
- Test the app’s touch controls. If touch works while the controller does not, the issue is likely pairing, driver, or handset compatibility rather than the PS4 connection.
A game will not start or has missing functions
Check whether the title requires PS VR, PS VR2, or another peripheral. Those requirements are among the documented Remote Play exclusions. A compatible controller and a strong connection cannot make a game that depends on unsupported hardware work remotely.
How to choose the right setup
Use touch controls when
- You want to test Remote Play without buying anything.
- You play short sessions or games with uncomplicated controls.
- You have Android 9 but not the Android version required for a supported physical controller.
Use a Bluetooth controller when
- You already own a DUALSHOCK 4 and the phone runs Android 10 or later.
- You already own a DualSense and the phone runs Android 12 or later.
- You want familiar analog sticks, triggers, and physical buttons for longer sessions.
Use a phone-attached controller when
- You prefer a handheld layout with the phone secured between the controls.
- Your Android phone is at least version 10.0 and the exact model fits the accessory.
- You have checked connector type, case clearance, and manufacturer compatibility before buying.
In every case, the console and network requirements remain the same. A more expensive controller cannot compensate for a PS4 that is offline, a mismatched account, an unsupported game, or an unstable connection.
Practical pre-session checklist
- PS4 system software is current.
- Remote Play is enabled.
- The PS4 is activated as the primary console.
- The PS4 is online, or Rest Mode network wake options are enabled.
- The Android device runs Android 9 or later.
- The same PlayStation account is used on the PS4 and phone.
- The app is installed and updated.
- The network reaches at least 5 Mbps; 15 Mbps is PlayStation’s recommendation for a better experience.
- Mobile-data use is enabled only if you accept the data consumption and possible carrier charges.
- The controller, if used, meets the Android-version requirement and is paired with the correct phone.
- The game does not require excluded VR or additional peripherals.
What the requirements mean in practice
The minimum viable setup is inexpensive: an existing PS4, an Android 9-or-later device, the free app, a PlayStation account, and an internet connection. You can leave the controller out entirely and use touch controls. Upgrading to a physical controller mainly changes comfort and precision, while upgrading the network changes the likelihood of a stable session; neither changes the underlying requirement that the PS4 runs the game.
