You play a Steam game on Android by streaming it from a computer through the free Steam Link app. The Android device receives the game’s video and audio and sends your controls back; the host PC does the actual game processing. You therefore need a compatible Android device, a PC that can run the game, Steam running on that PC, and a network with low enough delay and interference for responsive streaming.

Android 5.0 or newer is Steam’s stated minimum for the Steam Link app. A controller is optional because touch controls are available, but a physical controller is usually more comfortable for action, racing and platform games. Android-app compatibility and game compatibility are separate: the phone runs Steam Link, while the PC must support and launch the game.

How Steam games run on Android

Steam Link is a streaming client, not a way to install ordinary Windows or Linux Steam games directly on your phone. Steam Remote Play captures the game’s video and audio on the host computer, sends that stream to the Android device, and returns your button presses, stick movement and touch input to the PC. Steam describes Remote Play as sending “video and audio” from the gaming PC to another device. Read the official overview at Steam Remote Play.

This distinction determines what you need. Your Android phone, tablet or TV needs to decode the stream and run Steam Link, but it does not need PC-level graphics hardware. The host computer needs enough performance to run the game and encode the outgoing stream while Steam is open. If the game will not launch correctly on the PC itself, Steam Link cannot make it playable on Android.

Requirements at a glance

Requirement What Steam requires or recommends Why it matters
Android client Android phone, tablet or TV running Android 5.0 or newer; Steam Link app is free The device runs the client, displays the stream and sends input
Host computer Computer powered on with Steam running, signed in and able to launch the game The PC runs the game and handles rendering, audio and stream capture
Initial network Put the Android device and host PC on the same network during setup Steam Link discovers and pairs with the host more reliably on the local network
Router Steam recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Android device 5 GHz is generally less congested than 2.4 GHz, although its range is shorter
Host connection Steam recommends Ethernet for the computer A wired host avoids the simultaneous wireless sending and receiving that can add interference
Controls Touch controls work; a controller is optional Input choice affects comfort, precision and which games are practical
Game The title must launch on the host PC; non-Steam games added to the library may work but are not officially supported Steam Link streams a running PC game; it does not bypass PC, graphics or input limitations

Steam’s Android requirements and setup guidance are listed on its Android Steam Link App page. The Android version requirement applies to the app, not to every game in your Steam library.

Internet and home-network requirements

Use a private network for first-time setup

Connect the phone or tablet and the host PC to the same home network before opening Steam Link. A private network that permits devices to communicate is important: some guest networks and managed networks isolate clients, preventing the app from finding the computer even when both devices appear to have internet access.

Steam lists many public, workplace, school or university networks, captive-portal networks and client-isolated guest networks as environments where Remote Play is not supported. A hotel login page, enterprise Wi-Fi policy or guest SSID can therefore block discovery or streaming without any fault in the game.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Prefer Ethernet for the host PC

Connect the gaming computer to the router with an Ethernet cable when possible. Steam recommends this arrangement because a wireless host may need to receive game data and transmit the stream over the same radio environment, increasing contention and interference. The Android device can remain on Wi-Fi while the computer uses wired Ethernet.

Choose 5 GHz when the signal is strong

Steam recommends a 5 GHz wireless router for the Android client. Its general network guidance notes that 5 GHz is less congested than 2.4 GHz, but it has shorter range and loses strength more quickly through walls. Use 5 GHz when the device is reasonably close to the router; a strong 2.4 GHz signal can be more reliable at a distance than a weak 5 GHz signal. Other devices and applications using the network can also consume airtime and introduce stutter. See Steam Link – Suggested Network Settings.

Ports and firewall access

If Steam Link cannot discover the host, verify that the computer’s firewall permits Steam and Remote Play traffic. Steam documents these ports:

Protocol Ports Use in troubleshooting
UDP 27031, 27036 Allow for Remote Play streaming and discovery traffic where a firewall rule is required
TCP 27036, 27037 Allow for Remote Play connection traffic where a firewall rule is required

Do not open ports indiscriminately on a public network. On a home network, create rules for the Steam application or the documented ports, then test discovery again. Steam’s Remote Play support FAQ covers connection and compatibility limitations.

Prepare the host PC

  1. Turn on the computer. It must stay awake for the entire session; sleep, hibernation or a shutdown ends streaming.
  2. Start Steam and sign in. Use the account that owns the game or otherwise has access to it.
  3. Launch the game locally once. Confirm that it starts, reaches its menu and accepts input on the PC. Fix game-specific crashes, missing runtimes or graphics-driver problems on the computer before troubleshooting Android.
  4. Connect the PC to the router. Ethernet is Steam’s recommended host connection. If Wi-Fi is unavoidable, place the computer where it has a strong signal and minimize competing traffic.

Remote Play can stream only what the PC can run. A demanding title may require lower in-game graphics settings even if the Android device itself is modern, because rendering still happens on the host.

Install Steam Link and connect Android

  1. Install Steam Link. Get the free app from the Android app store. Steam also provides an Android download path for devices that do not use Google Play through its official Android instructions.
  2. Join the same network. Connect Android and the host PC to the same home router, preferably with the PC on Ethernet and Android on 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
  3. Open Steam Link. Follow the on-screen pairing process. The app scans for a computer running Steam; select the host PC when it appears.
  4. Complete the pairing test. Steam Link may display a PIN or perform a network check. Enter the code on the host if prompted and wait for the connection test to finish.
  5. Choose the host library. After pairing, Steam Link presents the Steam interface or library. Select a title that is installed and playable on the computer.
  6. Start the game. Launch it from Steam Link and wait for the host to open the game window. Keep Steam running on the PC throughout the session.
  7. Adjust the stream if needed. If the picture is unstable, open Steam Link’s streaming settings and try a lower quality preset such as Balanced or Fast. Use the performance overlay to determine whether network time is varying.

Touch controls or a physical controller?

Touch controls let you play without buying extra hardware, but virtual buttons can obscure the screen and provide less tactile feedback. They are most workable for turn-based games, menus, strategy titles and slower experiences. A physical controller is generally easier for games that require simultaneous camera movement, triggers, analog sticks or rapid button combinations.

Game and input compatibility limits

Launching on PC is the first compatibility test

Android 5.0 or newer makes the Steam Link app eligible to install; it does not make every Steam title compatible. The decisive first test is whether the game launches and plays correctly on the host computer. Steam Link then adds the constraints of video encoding, network delay and Android input handling.

Some graphics technologies and applications are limited

Steam documents limitations involving certain older graphics technologies, applications that request elevated permissions and games that use raw input in ways Remote Play cannot capture or translate reliably. A title can therefore run locally yet show a black screen, lose focus or ignore controls when streamed. Consult Steam’s Remote Play support FAQ when a specific game behaves differently through streaming.

Non-Steam games are not officially supported

You can add a non-Steam executable to the Steam library, and some such games may stream through Steam Link. Steam does not officially support every non-Steam addition, so compatibility, overlays and controller mapping can vary. Treat this as an experiment rather than a guaranteed feature.

Input methods can differ by game

Steam notes that some games use input methods that are not supported. A controller may appear connected in Android but fail inside the game if the title expects a particular raw-input mode, administrator-level access or a different controller class. The game’s own control settings and Steam Big Picture recognition are useful diagnostics.

Troubleshoot a missing host, lag or failed controls

Steam Link cannot find the PC

  • Confirm Steam is open, signed in and not stuck on an update or dialog box.
  • Verify Android and the PC are on the same private network, not separate guest or isolated SSIDs.
  • Disable or adjust firewall rules that block Steam, UDP 27031/27036 or TCP 27036/27037.
  • Restart Steam Link and Steam after confirming the router has assigned both devices addresses on the same local network.

The picture stutters or controls feel delayed

  1. Open Steam Link’s streaming performance overlay and watch for variable network time.
  2. Change stream quality to Balanced or Fast rather than the highest-quality option.
  3. Move Android closer to the router or switch to 5 GHz if the signal is strong enough.
  4. Use Ethernet for the host PC and pause large downloads, cloud backups or video streams on the network.
  5. Check for radio interference from other nearby wireless devices and retest.

Steam specifically recommends the overlay to identify variable network time and lowering quality when the stream is unstable. A sharper image cannot compensate for packet loss or congestion, so stabilize the connection before raising quality again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The controller is connected but the game ignores it

  • Open Steam Big Picture and verify that Steam recognizes the controller.
  • Test the controller in another supported game to separate a hardware pairing issue from a title-specific input issue.
  • Review the game’s input mode and disable conflicting remappers or overlays.
  • Try touch controls to determine whether the problem is limited to the controller class or raw-input method.
  • Check Steam’s compatibility notes because some games and input methods are unsupported through Remote Play.

A practical pre-session checklist

  • Android device runs version 5.0 or newer and has Steam Link installed.
  • Host PC is awake, signed in to Steam and connected to the router.
  • The target game launches successfully on the PC before streaming.
  • Android and PC share a private network during setup.
  • Host uses Ethernet where possible; Android uses strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi where practical.
  • Controller is paired and recognized by Steam Big Picture, or touch controls are configured.
  • Firewall permits Steam Remote Play traffic.
  • Other high-bandwidth or interference-producing network activity is paused if the stream is unstable.

What you can realistically expect

Steam Link can make a PC game feel like a handheld or TV experience, but it remains a remote session. Responsiveness depends on the complete path from the host’s game engine, through the PC’s encoder and home network, to Android’s decoder and your input device. The app’s Android requirement is modest; the practical limits are the host PC’s ability to run the game, the network’s consistency and the title’s graphics and input behavior.

For the most predictable setup, use an Android 5.0-or-newer device, a host PC that already runs the game correctly, Ethernet from PC to router, strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi for Android, and a controller recognized by Steam. When any one of those pieces is unavailable, Steam Link may still work, but the documented compatibility and network limits explain why results can differ from game to game.
