You do not need a high-end gaming PC to use GeForce NOW. The game runs on NVIDIA’s cloud hardware, while your device displays the stream and sends your controls. To play, you need an NVIDIA account, an available membership, a supported device or browser, a connection that meets NVIDIA’s bandwidth and latency targets, and access to a supported game. TV play also requires a compatible gamepad.

What you need at a glance

Check these requirements before signing up or buying equipment:

  • NVIDIA account: You must sign in to the GeForce NOW service.
  • Membership: Choose an available plan in your country. The plan affects the cloud rig, performance features and, depending on the plan, access priority or session limits.
  • Supported endpoint: This can be a compatible Windows PC, Mac, Chromebook, Linux computer, phone, tablet, browser, selected television, streaming device, handheld or immersive display.
  • Internet connection: NVIDIA specifies bandwidth targets for different resolutions and frame rates and requires latency below 80 ms to an NVIDIA data center.
  • A supported game: You generally must own or purchase the game through a connected store. Hundreds of popular free-to-play games are also supported.
  • Input hardware: A keyboard and mouse, touchscreen, or controller may work depending on the endpoint and game. TV gameplay specifically requires a supported gamepad.

How GeForce NOW works—and what you do not need

GeForce NOW is cloud gaming rather than remote access to your own computer. NVIDIA’s servers run the game, render each frame and send a video stream to your device. Your device decodes that stream and sends keyboard, mouse, touchscreen or controller input back to the service.

That arrangement removes the usual requirement for a powerful local graphics card, gaming CPU or large game installation. A modest computer can be sufficient if it meets the operating-system, browser and decoding requirements. It still needs a compatible display, an up-to-date supported app or browser, and a reliable network. An unsupported device cannot be made compatible simply by having a fast internet plan.

Membership determines the cloud hardware

NVIDIA’s current FAQ describes Free, Performance and Ultimate memberships. Names, limits, availability and benefits can change by country and date, so check the membership page for your location before subscribing. The published performance descriptions are ceilings or target capabilities, not guarantees for every game, device, data center or session.

Membership Cloud rig and published capability Important qualification
Free Basic cloud rigs Rig specifications and performance can vary with the game and server availability. Queueing or session conditions may also apply.
Performance RTX rigs, with support described as up to 1440p at 60 FPS The actual output depends on the game, endpoint, selected settings, network and regional availability.
Ultimate First access to RTX 5080 virtual gaming rigs for most games; NVIDIA describes up to 5K at 120 FPS or 360 FPS at 1080p in competitive gaming mode These are maximum published modes, subject to availability and compatibility. Not every game, screen or connection can use them.

A membership is access to the cloud service, not an all-you-can-play game library. The tier can change the quality and responsiveness of the cloud rig, but it does not automatically grant ownership of commercial games.

You still need access to the game

NVIDIA says players must own or purchase a supported game from a connected store before playing it. Supported stores named in the FAQ include Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, EA app, GOG, Epic Games Store, Steam and Xbox. The service also supports hundreds of popular free-to-play titles, so a purchase is not required for those games.

Catalog and store support are not identical everywhere. Country-level licensing or content restrictions can make a title unavailable even when its store is connected. Before buying a game for cloud play:

  1. Search the current GeForce NOW game catalog for the exact title and edition.
  2. Confirm that the store account containing the game is one you can connect to GeForce NOW.
  3. Check your country’s availability and any publisher or regional restrictions.
  4. Make sure the game is installed or claimed in the connected store when the service asks you to authenticate. GeForce NOW supplies the remote computer; it does not convert an unsupported title into a supported one.

Supported devices and operating-system requirements

NVIDIA maintains separate requirements for each platform. Product families are not universally supported: one television, handheld or phone model may qualify while another model from the same family does not. Use NVIDIA’s current system-requirements page to verify the exact model and software version.

Windows computers

The listed Windows requirement is Windows 10 or later, 64-bit. The computer also needs a supported GeForce NOW application or browser environment and enough decoding capability for the stream you select. Windows is an endpoint, not the machine running the game, so buying a high-end graphics card is not a general requirement.

Mac computers

NVIDIA lists macOS 10.15 or later. Confirm that your particular Mac can run the current application or supported browser and that its display and network can handle your chosen stream mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Chromebooks

Supported Chromebooks are listed with at least 4 GB of RAM. ChromeOS support still depends on the model, browser path and current NVIDIA compatibility list; do not assume that every Chromebook with 4 GB qualifies.

Linux

NVIDIA lists Linux among supported computer platforms, but the precise distribution, browser and hardware combinations are subject to the current requirements page. Verify those details before planning a Linux-only setup.

Android phones and tablets

The listed Android baseline is Android 7.0 or later with OpenGL ES 2.0 or higher. A newer operating system does not by itself guarantee support: check the model, app availability, display and controller compatibility. NVIDIA recommends a gamepad clip for phone play and says the Android app’s virtual gamepad is not recommended for long-term gameplay.

  • Control your home entertainment center with SHIELD Remote’s built in IR blaster. Control volume, power, or input source.

iPhone and iPad

NVIDIA lists iOS or iPadOS 15.4 or later. On these devices, keyboard and mouse support is intended for navigation tasks and is not recommended for gameplay; use a compatible gamepad for games that require physical controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Browsers

Browser access is available only through the browsers and operating systems NVIDIA lists. A browser that works on one platform may not be supported on another, so follow the current browser matrix rather than assuming that any modern browser will work.

Televisions, streaming devices and handhelds

NVIDIA’s compatibility list includes selected Smart TVs, Fire TV devices, Android TV and Chromecast devices, handhelds and immersive displays. The word “selected” matters: model, region, firmware and app availability can differ. A TV setup also needs a supported gamepad; the television’s remote is not a substitute for game controls.

Controllers, keyboard and mouse requirements

Input depends on both the endpoint and the game. NVIDIA lists Xbox controllers among supported gamepads. Other supported controllers and input combinations can vary by platform, so check the device-specific guidance.

  • TV: Pair a supported gamepad before launching a session. A controller is required for TV gameplay.
  • Phone: A Bluetooth or wired gamepad is usually more practical than on-screen controls. A clip keeps the phone and controller together; NVIDIA does not recommend the Android virtual gamepad for long-term play.
  • iPhone or iPad: Use a gamepad for gameplay. Keyboard and mouse are limited to navigation functions.
  • Computer: Keyboard and mouse can be suitable for games that support them, while a controller may be preferable for racing, action or console-style titles.

Internet requirements: speed is only one part

NVIDIA’s current system-requirements page gives these bandwidth targets for particular streaming modes. They are product requirements, not independent performance tests, and meeting a number does not guarantee a smooth session if latency, packet loss or Wi-Fi interference is poor.

NVIDIA recommends wired Ethernet or a router using 5 GHz Wi-Fi. It specifies latency below 80 ms to an NVIDIA data center. Bandwidth describes how much data can move; latency describes the delay before input reaches the cloud rig and a frame returns; stability determines whether that performance is sustained. A fast but congested connection can feel worse than a slower, stable one.

Check your connection before changing hardware

  1. Run the GeForce NOW network test or the in-app connection check from the location where you will play.
  2. Compare the measured bandwidth with the target for your chosen resolution and frame rate.
  3. Check latency to NVIDIA’s data center, not only a generic speed-test server. The published requirement is less than 80 ms.
  4. If possible, connect the endpoint by Ethernet. Otherwise use 5 GHz Wi-Fi close to the router, with a clear signal and minimal competing traffic.
  5. Pause large downloads, cloud backups and video streams on the same network while playing.
  6. If your connection cannot sustain the selected mode, lower the resolution or frame-rate target before assuming the device is defective.

Step-by-step setup

  1. Confirm the game: Find the title in the current GeForce NOW catalog and verify its connected store, edition and regional availability.
  2. Create or sign in to an NVIDIA account: Use the account you will keep for the service and complete any required verification.
  3. Select a membership: Compare the currently offered Free, Performance and Ultimate options in your country. Choose based on the cloud-rig capability and access conditions you need, not solely on the name of the game.
  4. Prepare the endpoint: Install the current GeForce NOW app where available, or open a supported browser. Confirm the operating-system version and exact device model meet NVIDIA’s list.
  5. Prepare input: Pair your controller before launching on a TV or phone. On a computer, connect the keyboard, mouse or controller you intend to use.
  6. Connect the store account: Link the relevant Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, EA app or GOG account when prompted, then authenticate with that store.
  7. Check the network: Use Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi where possible, run the connection test and select a stream mode your measured bandwidth and display can support.
  8. Launch and adjust: Start the game from the GeForce NOW library. If the stream is unstable, reduce the quality target and retest before changing other equipment.

Choosing the most practical setup

Your situation Most sensible starting point What to verify
You own a basic Windows or Mac computer Use the computer as the endpoint; no gaming GPU is generally needed. Windows 10 64-bit or macOS 10.15+, supported app or browser, display and network.
You want to play on a television Use a supported TV or streaming device with a paired gamepad. Exact model support, app availability, controller compatibility and Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
You want portable play Use a supported Android phone, iPhone, iPad or handheld with a physical gamepad. OS version, model support, controller pairing, screen mode and mobile-network stability.
You want the highest resolution or frame rate Choose a membership and endpoint that support the target mode. Published plan capability, display refresh rate, device decoding, bandwidth and latency.
You only play free-to-play titles Start with a supported free-to-play game and the membership available in your region. Exact catalog entry, store account requirement and any regional restriction.

Common problems and fixes

The game does not appear in your library

Check the exact title, edition and country catalog first. Confirm that you own it in one of the connected stores and that the correct store account is linked. A game can be available in one region and absent in another.

The picture is blurry or the stream drops frames

Measure the connection at the playing location. Move from congested 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi to 5 GHz or Ethernet, stop competing traffic and lower the selected stream target. A higher membership tier cannot compensate for insufficient bandwidth or unstable Wi-Fi.

Controls feel delayed

Check latency to an NVIDIA data center and aim for less than 80 ms. Wired networking usually removes local wireless interference; if latency remains high, choose a nearer available data center when the service allows it and use a lower stream target.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The controller is not detected

Pair it with the endpoint before starting the session, confirm that it is a supported gamepad and check the platform-specific input guidance. On a TV, a supported gamepad is mandatory. On iPhone or iPad, do not expect a keyboard and mouse to provide full gameplay controls.

The app or browser will not run

Recheck the exact operating-system version, device model, browser and regional app availability against NVIDIA’s current requirements. Updating an unsupported device may not resolve the problem if the model itself is not on the list.

You encounter queues or session restrictions

Those conditions can depend on membership, server demand and availability. Free users receive basic rigs whose specifications and performance may vary; paid tiers can provide different cloud hardware and access features. Review the current plan terms for your country rather than relying on an older description.
