To play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on Nintendo Switch 2, prepare enough free storage for a very large installation, a Nintendo Account, paid Nintendo Switch Online for online modes, an internet connection, and an Activision account. The eShop listing also warns that mandatory updates can need additional space, and account setup may include linking a mobile phone number.
The practical choice is to check console storage before downloading, use a compatible microSD Express card if the internal space is tight, and use a stable Wi-Fi 6 or wired connection for multiplayer.
Requirements at a glance
These are the prerequisites established for the Nintendo Switch 2 version listed by Nintendo:

How much storage Call of Duty needs on Switch 2
The listed installation requirement
The Australian Nintendo eShop listing retrieved in 2026 gives 79.1 GB as the required space for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on Nintendo Switch 2. Treat this as the current regional listing figure, not a permanent guarantee. Nintendo can revise the listing, and the installed footprint can change as content and patches are released.
The listing also states that “Additional storage space may be required for mandatory game updates.” In practice, the console must have room not only for the initial package but also for update downloads, temporary installation files and any extra content the game adds. A console that has exactly the listed amount free can therefore fail during installation or a later patch.
What the console’s 256 GB means
Nintendo specifies 256 GB of internal UFS storage for Switch 2. That is the nominal capacity of the storage hardware; part of it is reserved for the operating system and other system functions, so the user-available amount is lower. Other games, screenshots, video captures, downloadable content and update files also consume that user space.

Do not plan on using the full nominal capacity for games. Check the actual free-space figure shown by the console immediately before downloading, especially if several large titles are installed. Keeping a substantial cushion beyond the game’s listed requirement is safer than trying to reclaim space after an update has already started.
Expansion with microSD Express
Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. The Express requirement matters: a standard microSD or microSDXC card that worked in an older Switch model is not the right expansion medium for Switch 2 storage. Look for a card explicitly identified as microSD Express and stay within Nintendo’s 2 TB maximum.

A card is useful when the console’s internal free space is insufficient or when you expect to keep several large games installed. It does not remove the need for update headroom; the game and its updates still need available space on the storage location used for the installation.
Check storage before you download
Use the console’s own free-space reading rather than the capacity printed on the box. The following workflow catches most storage problems before a large download begins:
- Open System Settings on Switch 2.
- Choose Data Management and review the free space under console storage.
- Compare that available figure with the eShop requirement, while leaving extra room for mandatory updates.
- If space is tight, archive or delete software you no longer use and remove unnecessary screenshots or video captures. Re-downloadable software can be downloaded again from the account that purchased it.
- If you prefer not to remove existing games, insert a compatible microSD Express card within the supported capacity range and let the console prepare it for use.
- Return to Data Management and confirm that the game’s installation destination has the required free space before selecting download or install.
Because the listing figure comes from an Australian storefront, the displayed requirement can differ by region or change with a later listing revision. Use the eShop page shown for your own Nintendo Account as the final check.
Internet access and online multiplayer
What Nintendo Switch Online provides
Nintendo marks the game’s online modes as requiring both an internet connection and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo’s support description says, “Nintendo Switch Online is a paid service that lets members enjoy the following features.” For this game, that paid service is the gate for online multiplayer; simply connecting the console to Wi-Fi is not enough.
The membership is attached to the Nintendo Account used on the console. If a different account launches the game, verify that the account playing has access to the required membership under Nintendo’s account and family-group rules.

Connection options on Switch 2
Nintendo’s technical specifications list Wi-Fi 6 support, and the dock includes a wired LAN port. Wi-Fi is convenient when the console is used away from the dock; a wired connection through the dock can be preferable when you want the most consistent link during multiplayer. Neither option guarantees a particular experience if the household connection is congested or unstable.
Nintendo’s cited information does not publish a game-specific minimum Mbps figure. Do not treat an invented speed threshold as an official requirement. Instead, use a stable broadband connection, avoid heavy simultaneous downloads while playing, and test the connection from the console if matchmaking or voice features behave inconsistently.
Accounts you must set up
Nintendo Account
A Nintendo Account is needed for Nintendo Switch Online. Make sure the console profile that will play the game is linked to the intended account before purchasing a membership. Account region, parental settings and family-group status can affect which services are available, so resolve those details before troubleshooting the game itself.
Activision account and possible phone verification
The eShop information requires an Activision account and acceptance of Activision’s software terms. It also says that a mobile phone number linked to that account may be required. “May” is important: the prompt can depend on the account, region or service flow. Have access to the email and phone used for the account, and complete any linking or verification screen rather than assuming a Nintendo Account alone is sufficient.

Can you play without internet?
The cited Nintendo listing establishes that online play modes require internet access and Nintendo Switch Online. It does not document offline availability for every mode in the game, and it does not confirm that all single-player content works without a connection. Do not assume that the presence of a solo mode means the entire game is permanently playable offline.
If offline access is important, check the mode-specific instructions shown by Activision and Nintendo for your region and current game version. Plan for an internet connection at least for downloading, updating and account verification, even if a particular mode later permits offline use.
Digital and physical ownership considerations
Whether you obtain a digital or physical listing, plan around the eShop’s stated storage requirement and its warning about mandatory updates. A physical copy should not be treated as proof that no internal or expansion storage will be needed; modern games can still require substantial installed data and patches. Check the packaging and the current product information for the exact edition you are buying.
Digital ownership makes the storage check immediate because the download begins from the eShop. For either format, keep the Nintendo Account that purchased or registered the game available, since that account may be needed to redownload software or verify access.

Troubleshooting common setup failures
“Not enough space” appears despite the listed requirement
The free-space figure may be too close to the installation size, or the updater may need temporary working room. Return to Data Management, remove or archive unused software and captures, and retry only after the console reports a larger cushion. If the internal storage remains constrained, move the installation to a prepared microSD Express card.

The storage card is rejected
Confirm that the card is microSD Express rather than a conventional microSD model and that its capacity does not exceed 2 TB. Reinsert it with the console powered down if the card is not detected, then check Data Management again. A card that works in another Switch model is not automatically compatible with Switch 2.
Online multiplayer is locked
Check three separate conditions: the console is connected to the internet, the Nintendo Account launching the game has a current paid Nintendo Switch Online membership, and the game’s online service account is signed in. Fix the first failed condition before changing anything else; a valid membership cannot compensate for a disconnected console, and a working network cannot replace an expired membership.
The game asks for a phone number or Activision sign-in
That prompt is consistent with the eShop requirement for an Activision account and its notice that a linked mobile number may be required. Use the account’s official sign-in and verification flow, ensure the email and phone are accessible, and read the displayed terms before accepting them. If the number is already linked elsewhere, follow the account service’s recovery or unlink instructions rather than creating duplicate accounts.
Matches disconnect or take a long time to start
Run the console’s internet connection test, pause other large downloads, and move closer to the router when using Wi-Fi. For docked play, try the dock’s wired LAN connection. Nintendo does not publish a specific minimum bandwidth for this title, so focus on consistency, latency and avoiding interference rather than chasing an unsupported Mbps target.
