The right Steam Deck depends on three decisions: whether you want the LCD or OLED display, how much internal storage your game library needs, and whether you will use it mainly as a handheld or with a monitor. Valve currently lists a 256GB LCD model and 512GB and 1TB OLED models. The OLED versions add a larger HDR panel, a higher refresh-rate ceiling, Wi-Fi 6E and a wider manufacturer-advertised battery range; the 1TB version adds etched anti-glare glass and a case with a removable liner. All models accept microSD cards, while a dock or USB-C hub expands connectivity but does not increase game performance.

Use the comparison below as a starting point, then check the current regional lineup, price and stock on Valve’s Steam Deck OLED page and OLED technical specifications. Valve notes that specifications can change.

Which Steam Deck model should you buy?

For most buyers choosing new hardware, the 512GB OLED is the balanced option: it has the OLED display, 90Hz capability, Wi-Fi 6E and more internal space than the entry LCD model without the 1TB model’s specialized etched glass. Choose the 1TB OLED if you expect a large installed library, play in bright environments where reduced reflections matter, or value its case with a removable liner. Choose the 256GB LCD when the lowest entry cost is the priority and you are comfortable using a microSD card or uninstalling games as your library changes.

These recommendations describe the feature trade-offs, not a universal value judgment. Valve does not provide a single worldwide price in the specifications, and availability can differ by region. Check the Steam store for your location before deciding.

1TB OLED 7.4-inch HDR OLED, 1280 × 800, up to 90Hz 1TB NVMe Wi-Fi 6E 3–12 hours, depending on content Etched anti-glare glass; case with removable liner

All three configurations appear on Valve’s comparison page. The table reproduces Valve’s stated specifications and battery estimates; it is not an independent laboratory test.

LCD versus OLED: what changes in daily use?

Display size, panel type and refresh rate

The LCD model has a 7-inch, 1280 × 800 screen with refresh rates up to 60Hz. Both OLED models use a 7.4-inch HDR OLED panel at the same 1280 × 800 resolution, with refresh rates up to 90Hz. The OLED panel is therefore larger and has a higher refresh-rate ceiling, while the resolution remains the same. Whether you notice the difference depends on the games you play, the frame rates they produce and how sensitive you are to contrast, HDR highlights and motion smoothness.

Do not infer that every game will run at 90 frames per second. The 90Hz specification describes the display’s maximum refresh rate, not a guaranteed game frame rate. Actual results vary with the title, graphics settings and software updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Anti-glare glass and the 1TB model

The 1TB OLED includes etched anti-glare glass. This can be useful near windows, under bright lights or outdoors, where reflections make a glossy screen harder to see. It does not make the screen reflection-free in every situation. The 512GB OLED does not list that etched-glass distinction in Valve’s comparison, so select the 1TB model only if the feature and extra capacity justify the regional price difference.

Wireless connectivity

The LCD listing specifies Wi-Fi 5. The OLED specifications list Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. A compatible Wi-Fi 6E network is required to benefit from the newer Wi-Fi band; a home router using older standards will not be transformed by the handheld. Wireless improvements can matter for downloads, streaming and crowded networks, but they do not change the rendering performance of a game running locally.

How much battery life should you expect?

Valve advertises 2–8 hours for the LCD model and 3–12 hours for OLED models. Valve explicitly says that the content being played affects the range. Treat these figures as manufacturer ranges rather than a promise for a particular game, brightness level or performance setting. No game-specific runtime is established by these specifications.

Lexar 2TB Play Blue Micro SD Card, 160MB/s Read, 4K, V30, UHS-I, A2
  • Compatible with Nintendo-Switch 1 (NOT compatible with Nintendo-Switch 2), smartphones, and tablets
  • Boost your gaming experience with up to 160MB/s read for fast load times
  • A2-rated app performance lets you quickly access and enjoy games and apps without lag for an enhanced gaming experience and a competitive edge
  • Store more of your favorite games and other content with capacities up to 2TB
  • Built to endure with temperature resistance, waterproofing, x-ray protection, and more

Valve also states that Steam Deck OLED has “30-50% more battery life.” This is Valve’s own manufacturer claim, attributed on its product page; it is not an independent test result. Valve attributes the claim to the larger battery, the lower-power OLED display and an updated APU.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What changes runtime?

  • Graphically demanding games generally place a greater load on the system than lightweight 2D or older titles.
  • Higher brightness, a higher refresh target and wireless activity can change power use.
  • Downloads and online features use the network radios while active.
  • Battery capacity naturally declines as a battery ages, so a used unit may not match the original advertised range.

When comparing a used LCD with a new OLED, ask for the seller’s actual battery condition and remember that the published ranges describe new hardware under variable content, not a guaranteed second-hand runtime.

How much storage do you need?

Internal storage is NVMe in all three listed configurations: 256GB LCD, 512GB OLED and 1TB OLED. The usable space shown by the operating system will be lower than the advertised capacity because system software occupies part of the drive. The 1TB model is the easiest choice if you keep many large games installed; the 256GB model can fill quickly when several modern titles are installed at once.

Using a microSD card

Every model supports microSD expansion. Valve’s FAQ says Steam Deck formats a card to ext4 with casefolding for use in the device. Formatting is destructive, so copy any existing files elsewhere before allowing the Deck to format the card. A card prepared for another device may need to be reformatted.

  1. Insert a compatible microSD card into the Deck while it is powered down or following Valve’s on-screen guidance.
  2. Open the storage settings and choose the card as the target for formatting when prompted.
  3. Confirm the format only after backing up files you want to keep.
  4. Set the card as the default install location if you want future downloads to use it automatically, or choose the destination for each installation.

The official material establishes expansion support and the required file-system handling, but it does not establish performance parity between microSD storage and the internal NVMe drive. Check the card’s capacity, speed class, compatibility and current availability rather than assuming that a faster-rated card will produce the same loading behavior as NVMe.

Choosing capacity by library habits

  • Mostly one or two current games: 256GB plus a quality microSD card may be sufficient if you are willing to rotate installations.
  • A mixed library: 512GB gives more room for several large games and leaves the card for expansion or media.
  • Large backlog or frequent travel: 1TB reduces uninstalling and reinstalling when you have limited internet access.

Can you play Steam Deck games offline?

Offline play is conditional. Valve says an installed game can run without an internet connection unless that particular game requires one. You need internet access to download games, install updates and use online multiplayer. Launchers, digital-rights checks, anti-cheat systems and other title-specific services can impose additional requirements.

Rank #3
Lexar 1TB Play Blue Micro SD Card, 160MB/s Read, 4K, V30, UHS-I, A2
  • Compatible with Nintendo-Switch 1 (NOT Nintendo-Switch 2), smartphones, and tablets

Before a trip, install the games you intend to play, launch each one while connected, and confirm that its own menus and saves work without a connection. Do not assume that a game described as single-player is automatically available offline; check the requirements for that title. Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ provides the general rule, while the game’s current store page and publisher documentation determine exceptions.

Will your PC games work?

Steam Deck is designed to run Steam games, but compatibility is not universal. Valve says non-Steam games can run through Proton. That statement does not guarantee that every Windows game, launcher, anti-cheat implementation or online service will work.

Check important games before buying

  1. Make a list of the games you expect to play most often, including games from non-Steam launchers.
  2. Check each title’s current Steam Deck compatibility information and recent player reports.
  3. Look specifically for always-online requirements, third-party launchers and anti-cheat dependencies.
  4. For non-Steam games, verify whether the required launcher and Proton configuration are currently supported.
  5. If a game is central to your purchase, treat an unresolved compatibility report as a buying risk rather than assuming a future update will fix it.

Compatibility can change with game, launcher and operating-system updates. A result that works today is not a permanent guarantee, and a title that fails today may later receive a fix.

Do you need a dock?

You do not need a dock to play in handheld mode. Valve describes docking as similar to connecting a USB-C hub to a PC. A docking station or USB-C hub is useful when you want to connect an external display, keyboard, mouse, Ethernet adapter or other peripherals. The OLED technical specifications list USB-C DisplayPort output, and Valve’s product information describes external-display connectivity.

Docking does not increase game performance. Valve says the Deck runs at full performance in portable mode and that connecting a dock does not raise it. A dock changes how you connect the device; it is not a graphics upgrade.

When a dock is worthwhile

  • TV or monitor setup: choose a dock or hub with the display connector and resolution/refresh support your screen needs.
  • Desk replacement: check for enough USB ports for your keyboard, mouse and storage.
  • Network-heavy use: verify whether the accessory provides the wired network connection you want.
  • Charging while connected: confirm that the dock and power arrangement meet the Deck’s power needs; the OLED specification lists a 45W USB-C power supply.

Check port layout, power delivery, display support and firmware requirements for any accessory before purchase. A generic USB-C hub may provide the ports you need, while a dedicated docking station may offer a more convenient stand and cable arrangement.

What is included and what is optional?

Valve’s comparison lists a carrying case with the 256GB LCD model. The 1TB OLED is listed with a case that has a removable liner. The table above identifies those distinctions; verify the exact package for the regional configuration you are ordering.

MicroSD card

A microSD card is the most direct expansion accessory because all listed models support it. Buy based on capacity, speed class and compatibility, and plan to let Steam Deck format it. Do not buy one solely on an assumption that its performance will equal the internal NVMe drive.

Dock or USB-C hub

Buy one if you plan to use a TV, monitor or several USB peripherals. It is unnecessary for handheld play and does not improve frame rates or graphics quality by itself.

Replacement parts and repair tools

Valve points owners to iFixit for replacement parts and repair guides. Its OLED repair information includes a trained-professional caveat, so a repair guide is not the same as a recommendation that every owner open the device. Confirm the exact LCD or OLED model fit and current stock before ordering a part. A component made for one revision may not fit another.

Buying a new or used Steam Deck: a practical checklist

Before ordering new

  1. Confirm the model: identify LCD, 512GB OLED or 1TB OLED rather than relying on a seller’s abbreviated title.
  2. Check regional details: verify price, taxes, delivery, warranty terms and stock for your country on Steam.
  3. Match capacity to your library: decide whether 256GB plus microSD is acceptable or whether internal 512GB/1TB storage is more convenient.
  4. Review your key games: check compatibility, launchers, anti-cheat and online requirements.
  5. Plan connectivity: decide whether you need only handheld play or a docked monitor and peripherals.
  6. Budget for expansion: include a microSD card or dock only if your use case requires one.

When inspecting a used unit

  • Identify the display type and internal capacity in the system information, not just the seller’s listing.
  • Check the screen for damage, dead pixels, abnormal brightness and excessive reflections relevant to where you play.
  • Test both analog sticks, triggers, buttons, touchpads, speakers, wireless connections and USB-C charging.
  • Ask how long the battery lasts in the games you care about; do not treat the original manufacturer range as a used-device guarantee.
  • Confirm that the microSD slot reads and formats a card correctly.
  • Check whether the case and power supply match the advertised configuration.
  • For OLED devices, verify whether the 1TB unit’s etched glass and removable-liner case are actually included if the seller claims that configuration.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming OLED means faster game performance

The OLED model changes the screen, wireless hardware, battery and related components. A higher refresh ceiling does not guarantee higher frame rates in every title. Choose OLED for the display and feature set you value, not an assumption that docking or the panel alone makes all games run faster.

Buying too little storage

A 256GB drive can become inconvenient when several large games are installed. Estimate your actual rotation and decide whether managing a microSD card is acceptable before selecting the entry model.

Expecting a dock to fix performance

Valve says docking does not improve performance. If your goal is more frames or higher graphical settings, a dock will not provide that; its role is display and peripheral connectivity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming every game works offline

Offline play depends on the installed title. Complete the first launch and any required authentication while connected, then test the game before traveling.

Assuming Proton guarantees non-Steam compatibility

Proton enables many non-Steam games, but launchers, anti-cheat and online services can still block a title. Check the specific game rather than relying on a blanket compatibility claim.

Using an unverified repair part

LCD and OLED components are not interchangeable by default. Match the exact model and follow the appropriate guide; Valve’s repair information includes a trained-professional qualification for OLED work.

A simple decision framework

Choose the 256GB LCD when

  • You want the entry configuration and are comfortable expanding with microSD storage.
  • A 7-inch LCD at up to 60Hz meets your expectations.
  • Wi-Fi 5 is adequate for your network.
  • You regularly rotate games instead of keeping a large installed library.

Choose the 512GB OLED when

  • You want the larger 7.4-inch HDR OLED display and up-to-90Hz capability.
  • You value Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.
  • You want more internal storage without selecting the 1TB configuration.
  • You prefer the OLED battery range and 50Wh specification, while understanding that actual runtime is content-dependent.

Choose the 1TB OLED when

  • You want the most internal storage among the listed configurations.
  • Etched anti-glare glass is useful for your lighting conditions.
  • You value the case with a removable liner.
  • You want to minimize game shuffling and rely less on removable storage.

Questions to answer before you click Buy

  • Which games must work, and do any require an online connection or third-party launcher?
  • Will you play mostly on the built-in screen or connect to a monitor or TV?
  • How many large games do you expect to keep installed?
  • Is your home network compatible with the wireless standard you expect to use?
  • Do you need a microSD card immediately, or is internal storage sufficient?
  • Are you buying in a region where the model, price and warranty terms have been verified?

The best purchase is the configuration that matches those answers. OLED is the feature-rich choice, LCD remains a practical entry point, and storage and game compatibility deserve as much attention as the screen.
