A remake rebuilds a game, often changing its technology, assets, controls or presentation. A remaster generally preserves the original game while improving resolution, audio, performance, packaging or included content. Those descriptions are useful starting points, not universal technical rules: publishers apply the labels differently. To understand any PS2-era re-release, check the publisher’s wording, the actual rebuild scope, the original game’s platform lineage, the modern platform and the edition’s included content.
Remake versus remaster: the practical difference
The word on a box does not tell you exactly how much changed. The safest approach is to treat “remake” and “remaster” as descriptions of scope, then verify what the release actually contains.
What a remaster usually means
A remaster starts with the existing game and adapts it for newer hardware. Typical work can include higher-resolution output, improved texture filtering, cleaner audio, modern display support, faster loading, updated menus, accessibility options or a bundle of previously separate content. The underlying game design, levels, story structure and much of the original code or art usually remain recognizable.

Square Enix’s official title FINAL FANTASY X | X-2 HD Remaster is a clear example of this label. The release presents Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2 as an HD remaster package rather than advertising a ground-up reconstruction. “HD” describes an important presentation upgrade, while “Remaster” signals continuity with the original games.
What a remake usually means
A remake rebuilds substantially more of the game. Developers may recreate environments, character models, animation, lighting, effects, interfaces and audio; replace the original engine; redesign controls; or revise encounters so the result works naturally on modern hardware. The story and broad identity can remain familiar even when the implementation is new.
PlayStation describes the PS4 version of Shadow of the Colossus as a remake “rebuilt from the ground up by Bluepoint Games and JAPAN Studio.” That wording identifies a much larger reconstruction than a straightforward resolution patch. It does not mean every remake changes every system, nor that every publisher uses “remake” according to one formal industry standard.
Other re-release terms you may see
Some editions are ports, compilations, director’s cuts, definitive editions or collections. A port moves a game to another platform with varying technical changes; it is not automatically a remaster. A collection may bundle original versions, remasters or both. A “definitive” label can indicate added content without revealing whether the engine or assets were rebuilt. Read the product description instead of inferring scope from the subtitle.
How to identify what a PS2 re-release really is
Use these four checks before deciding whether a release is the version you want:
- Read the publisher’s label and rebuild statement. “Remake,” “rebuilt from the ground up” and similar wording indicate substantial reconstruction. “HD Remaster” points toward preservation with technical upgrades.
- Trace the original game and platform. The platform of the new edition does not prove the platform of the original. A PS4 or PS5 release may follow a PS2, PS3, arcade or other version. Confirm the lineage in the official description.
- List the modern platforms and edition differences. A PS4 listing, a PS5 remake and a backward-compatible version can have different performance, features or included bonuses. Regional listings can also change.
- Check the included content. Determine whether you are receiving one game, a two-game bundle, downloadable expansions, alternate soundtracks, bonus modes or only the base campaign.
This method is more reliable than assuming a familiar title has been rebuilt simply because its cover art looks modern.
Confirmed examples and what they demonstrate
| Release | What the official material establishes | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Shadow of the Colossus (PS4) | PlayStation calls it a remake rebuilt from the ground up by Bluepoint Games and JAPAN Studio, and its official store lists the PS4 game. | A principal remake example for a game associated with the PS2 era. Compare the rebuild scope with the earlier release rather than treating it as a simple HD patch. |
| Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster | Square Enix uses the “HD Remaster” name and identifies Final Fantasy X as a PS2 title. PlayStation listed the HD Remaster for PS4 in a 2018 promotion. | A contrasting remaster example. The promotion is historical evidence and does not establish current regional availability or price. |
| Demon’s Souls (PS5) | PlayStation calls the PS5 release a remake. It dates the original Japanese release to February 2009 and the remake to November 2020. | A useful modern comparison for rebuild scope, but the cited information does not establish this as a PS2-origin game. |
Shadow of the Colossus: a ground-up remake example
The PS4 Shadow of the Colossus is the clearest case in the available official descriptions. PlayStation identifies Bluepoint Games and JAPAN Studio as rebuilding it from the ground up and presents the result as a remake. The earlier game is the PS2-era version many players remember; the PS4 edition is a separate modern release, not merely the original disc running at a higher resolution.
That distinction matters when you compare versions. A ground-up remake can reproduce the original’s locations, bosses and progression while replacing the technical foundation. Visual assets, lighting, animation and interface behavior may therefore differ even when the sequence of events feels familiar. If you want the historical PS2 presentation, seek an edition explicitly identified as the original or a preservation-oriented port. If you want the modern reconstruction, verify that the listing is the PS4 remake rather than a compatibility release of an older edition.

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster: what a remaster package tells you
Square Enix’s name makes two facts clear: the package is an HD remaster, and it contains both Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2. The original Final Fantasy X is identified as a PS2 title. This is a useful reminder that “remaster” can describe a package as well as an individual game: the buyer is not necessarily receiving one upgraded title.
When evaluating this type of release, inspect the store description for the exact games and language options included, whether bonus material is bundled, and which platform edition you are viewing. A historical PS4 listing or promotion confirms that an edition existed at that time; it does not guarantee that the same bundle, price or storefront listing remains today.

Demon’s Souls: a relevant remake that is not a PS2 example
Demon’s Souls helps illustrate why lineage must be checked separately from remake status. PlayStation calls the PS5 release a remake, gives the original Japanese launch as February 2009 and dates the remake to November 2020. Those facts establish a remake relationship, but they do not identify the original as a PS2 game. It belongs in a comparison of remake scope, not in a definitive list of PS2-origin remakes based on the cited descriptions.
Sony Interactive Entertainment reported more than 1.4 million copies sold since November 12, 2020 in its September 30, 2021 announcement about Bluepoint’s acquisition. That is a historical sales report for this remake, not a current total and not a statistic for PS2 remakes as a category.

Visual and audio presentation
Remasters commonly raise output resolution, improve filtering and clean up audio while retaining the original art direction. Remakes can replace models, environments, effects and animation entirely. A brighter image or sharper texture alone does not prove that a game is a remake; the publisher’s rebuild description and the extent of system changes matter more.
Controls and interface
A modern release may add analog-stick support, revised camera behavior, remappable controls, redesigned menus or accessibility settings. These improvements can alter how the game feels without changing its story. Check the feature list if a particular control scheme or accessibility option is important to you.
Content and edition boundaries
Two releases with similar names can contain different campaigns, bonus modes or downloadable content. A remaster collection can combine sequels, while a remake may cover only one original game. Confirm the exact contents before purchasing, especially when a store displays several generations of the same series.

A buying and comparison checklist
Use this checklist for any title marketed as a PS2 remake or remaster:
- Write down the original game’s name, release platform and region.
- Record the publisher’s exact term: remake, remaster, port, collection or another label.
- Look for a stated rebuild scope such as “rebuilt from the ground up.”
- Compare the new edition’s platform, resolution or performance targets and controller support.
- Check whether the package includes one game, multiple games, expansions or bonus content.
- Verify the store region and the edition’s current availability on the date you intend to buy.
- Decide whether you want historical accuracy or modern presentation; the best choice differs for preservation and convenience.
If a listing does not answer one of these questions, treat the missing detail as unknown rather than assuming the most favorable interpretation.
What is—and is not—known about the wider PS2 remake catalog
The documented examples above are not a complete worldwide catalog. The available official descriptions establish the labels, selected platforms and dates for Shadow of the Colossus, Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster and Demon’s Souls, but they do not establish how many PS2-origin games have received remakes or remasters, their combined sales or their relative popularity. No category-wide statistic should be inferred from the reported Demon’s Souls sales figure.
Regional editions and storefront listings can change after an article is published. For a current purchase decision, use the relevant publisher or platform store in your country and read the edition details attached to that listing.

Bottom line for PS2-era re-releases
Start with scope, not the label. A remaster such as Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster signals an updated presentation and package built around the existing games. The PS4 Shadow of the Colossus demonstrates a larger, ground-up remake. Demon’s Souls shows why a remake can be relevant to the comparison without being a PS2-origin title. Verify lineage, platform, edition contents and current regional availability every time.
