Compatibility depends on the console generation, the individual game, and the exact accessory model. PlayStation 5 runs the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PlayStation 4 games, but some titles are PS4-only or may have missing functions and unexpected behavior. DualSense is required for native PS5 games; DualShock 4 remains useful for supported PS4 games played on PS5. Original PlayStation VR and PlayStation VR2 are separate systems with different hardware and game libraries.
Start with the game’s exact compatibility label
“PlayStation compatible” is not a universal guarantee. Before buying a game, controller, camera or specialty peripheral, identify the console, the game edition and the accessory model. Then check the individual game’s PlayStation Store listing and the accessory maker’s current compatibility information.
Sony describes the overwhelming majority of its 4,000-plus PS4 games as playable on PS5. That is a broad platform statement, not a promise that every PS4 title works perfectly. The Store identifies games that are “Playable on: PS4 only”. A compatible game can also have unavailable PS4 functions, errors or other behavior that differs from playing it on a PS4.

- Accessory support: depends on the exact product, game and sometimes the game mode, not simply on whether the accessory is marketed for PlayStation.
Can I play PS4 games on PS5?
Usually, yes. Most PS4 games run on PS5, including digital purchases associated with your PlayStation account and compatible PS4 discs on a PS5 model with a disc drive. The important exception is the title-level Store label: some games are marked PS4-only, and Sony warns that certain compatible games may not reproduce every PS4 feature or may show errors and unexpected behavior.

A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
How to check a game before you buy it
- Open the game’s current PlayStation Store page.
- Look for the platform and compatibility wording, including whether it says “Playable on: PS4 only.”
- Read any notes about PS5 limitations, required peripherals or separate PS4 and PS5 editions.
- For a physical copy, confirm that the disc is a PS4 version and that your PS5 has a disc drive.
- If you intend to use a steering wheel, arcade stick, flight stick, VR controller or other add-on, check that product’s model-specific support as well as the game’s controller requirements.
Sony recommends trying a PS4 game on PS5 before committing to additional accessories when behavior or functionality may differ. That is particularly sensible for competitive games, older music or motion titles, and games whose original experience depended on a camera or a specialized controller.
PS3 discs and PS3-disc upgrade paths
PS5 does not support PS3 game discs. A related limitation applies to some PS4 digital upgrades obtained through a PS3-disc upgrade path: if the PS3 disc is still required as the ownership or launch key, that game cannot be played on PS5. A PS3 disc cannot be used as though it were a PS4 disc.

Can I use a DualShock 4 to play PS5 games?
No. Sony’s current guidance is explicit: PS5 games can only be played with DualSense wireless controllers. A DualShock 4 can still be a practical second controller for a supported PS4 game running on PS5, but connecting it does not make it suitable for a native PS5 title.

That distinction matters when a game has both PS4 and PS5 versions. Launching the PS4 version may allow DualShock 4 support; launching the PS5 version requires DualSense. Check which version is installed before troubleshooting a controller that appears not to work.
Why a DualSense may not behave like a DualShock 4
A DualSense can play supported PS4 games on PS5, but the game may not use every DualSense feature. Compatibility means the controller can operate the game; it does not mean the PS4 title gains the full feature set of a native PS5 game. Conversely, a PS4 title may still expect a particular legacy controller or motion accessory for a feature to function.
Do PS4 steering wheels, arcade sticks and flight sticks work on PS5?
Some officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks and flight sticks work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games, but category-level compatibility is not enough to make a purchase decision. Sony cautions that not all officially licensed or third-party peripherals work on PS5.

Use this model-and-game check
- Write down the accessory’s exact model number and whether it is officially licensed.
- Identify whether you will play the PS4 or PS5 version of the game.
- Check the accessory maker’s compatibility list for that console and title.
- Check the game’s Store entry or manual for required controller types and supported modes.
- Confirm how the accessory connects: USB, wireless receiver, pedals, shifter or another component may each have separate requirements.
Do not infer that one racing wheel works because another wheel does, or that an arcade stick supported by a PS4 version automatically works with the PS5 version. The exact model and software version can change the result. If the maker does not list the product for the specific console and game, treat support as unconfirmed rather than guaranteed.

Can I play original PS VR games on PS5?
Yes, supported original PS VR games can run on PS5, but the PS4-era hardware remains necessary. A PS5 HD Camera is not a substitute for the PS4 Camera used by original PS VR.
Hardware required for original PS VR on PS5
- The original PlayStation VR headset.
- A PlayStation Camera for PS4, model CUH-ZEY1 or CUH-ZEY2.
- The PlayStation Camera adaptor for connecting that camera to PS5. Sony says the adaptor is available at no charge.
- The controller specified by the game, which may include DualShock 4, PlayStation Move or PlayStation VR Aim.
Check the game listing before setting up the headset. Some titles use a standard gamepad, while others require or support Move or Aim controllers. A game that launches in VR is not necessarily playable with every controller you already own.

Common original-PS-VR setup mistakes
- Using the PS5 HD Camera: it does not replace the PS4 Camera for original PS VR.
- Omitting the camera adaptor: the headset alone cannot provide the camera tracking required by these games.
- Assuming every PS VR title transfers: verify the individual game’s PS5 support and controller requirements.
- Buying a new controller first: establish whether the game needs Move, Aim or DualShock 4 before purchasing anything.
How is PS VR2 different from original PS VR?
PS VR2 is a separate PS5-only ecosystem. It does not work with PS4, and original PS VR cannot play PS VR2 games. PS VR2 also cannot play original PS VR content. These are not interchangeable headset generations or backward-compatible controller systems.

When a Store page mentions VR, verify which VR system it names. A listing for a PS VR2 game is not evidence that the original headset can run it, and an original PS VR listing does not establish PS VR2 support.
A practical compatibility decision process
For a game purchase
- Choose the console version you intend to play: PS4 on PS5 or native PS5.
- Read the Store compatibility label and reject any title marked PS4-only if you need PS5 play.
- Check notes about missing functions, errors, unexpected behavior or required accessories.
- For discs, match the disc generation to the console’s drive and remember that PS3 discs are unsupported.
For a controller or peripheral purchase
- Identify the exact accessory model, not merely its product category.
- Match it to the game generation and the particular title.
- Read the manufacturer’s current compatibility statement.
- Confirm whether the game needs a special controller, camera or VR system.
- If possible, test the game first on PS5 before adding hardware, especially when the title has known feature differences.
For an existing PS4 setup
- Keep DualShock 4 available for supported PS4 games; use DualSense for PS5 games.
- Keep the PS4 Camera and obtain the no-charge adaptor if you plan to use original PS VR on PS5.
- Retain Move or Aim controllers only when the specific VR title supports or requires them.
- Do not assume a PS4 wheel, stick or flight controller will transfer to PS5 without model-level confirmation.
Troubleshooting when an accessory does not work
The controller connects but the game rejects it
Check whether you launched the PS5 or PS4 version. A DualShock 4 may work in the PS4 version but not the native PS5 version. Then check the Store page for a controller requirement and the accessory maker’s support list.

A PS4 VR game cannot track movement
Verify that the connected camera is a PS4 Camera model CUH-ZEY1 or CUH-ZEY2 and that the PlayStation Camera adaptor is installed. The PS5 HD Camera is not an alternative for original PS VR. Finally, check whether the title needs Move or Aim hardware.
A specialty peripheral works in menus but not in the game
Menu operation does not prove in-game support. Confirm the exact game version, accessory model and supported mode. A product can be licensed for PlayStation yet still be unsupported by a particular PS5 game, so follow the maker’s title-specific instructions.
A PS4 game runs but behaves differently
Compatibility does not guarantee identical functionality. Look for the title’s notes, update information and known limitations, and try the game before buying add-ons intended to restore a feature that may not be available on PS5.
