To digitize DVDs and Blu-rays, you need a computer, an optical drive that actually reads the discs in your collection, disc-reading software, optional transcoding software, and enough storage for the files plus a backup. A DVD-only drive cannot read Blu-ray media; a Blu-ray-capable drive can generally handle DVDs as well, provided its connection, operating-system support, and format compatibility match your computer and discs.

The process has two separate stages: first read or copy the disc contents, then decide whether to keep a larger copy or convert the video into smaller, more convenient files. Plan storage and check the rules in your jurisdiction before processing protected commercial discs.

Equipment and software checklist

Gather these items before starting a large collection. The exact combination depends on whether you want preservation-oriented copies, smaller playback files, or both.

Need What to look for Why it matters
Computer A system with a compatible USB port or an internal drive bay, supported operating system, and enough free working space Disc-reading and video conversion are computer-based tasks, and temporary files can require substantial space
Optical drive A Blu-ray-capable drive for a mixed DVD/Blu-ray collection; verify connection, operating-system support, and supported disc formats with the drive maker Blu-ray data cannot be read by a DVD-only unit
Disc-reading software An application that can open the disc and save its video or folder structure; check its current documentation for supported media and operating systems This stage gets usable source files off the physical disc
Transcoding software An application such as HandBrake when you want MP4, MKV, or WebM files, resizing, cropping, or selected subtitle handling Transcoding can make files easier to store and play, but it changes the video
Storage Space for source copies, converted files, temporary work, and at least one additional backup if the collection is important The required capacity depends on your discs and output settings, not a universal terabyte figure
Cataloging plan Consistent filenames and a way to record title, edition, audio tracks, subtitles, and verification status Good organization prevents confusion when several editions or languages are present

Choose the right optical drive

For a DVD-only collection

A DVD drive can read DVDs, but it will not read Blu-ray discs. If you may add Blu-rays later, buying a Blu-ray-capable drive now avoids replacing the hardware.

For DVDs and Blu-rays together

One Blu-ray-capable optical drive is normally the practical choice for a mixed collection. Confirm that it connects to your computer (for example, through the available USB standard or an internal interface), that the operating system supports it, and that it handles the specific recordable or pressed formats you own. The drive is the hardware through which software reads disc data; software cannot add Blu-ray capability to a DVD-only mechanism. MakeMKV’s technical documentation explains the role of the optical drive in this process: MakeMKV: Direct access to SCSI devices on Mac OS X.

External versus internal

An external USB drive is useful for a laptop or a desktop without an open drive bay. Check whether the drive needs one USB connection or additional power, and avoid assuming that every USB enclosure supports every disc format. An internal drive can be tidier in a desktop, but it still must meet the same Blu-ray, connection, and operating-system requirements.

Understand the two-stage workflow

Reading a disc and converting its video are different jobs. Keeping them separate gives you a recoverable source and lets you create alternate playback versions later.

Stage 1: read or copy the disc

Disc-reading software examines the disc structure and writes selected titles, streams, or a backup to your storage. MakeMKV’s FAQ describes a Blu-ray backup as a folder structure rather than an ISO image, so follow the current behavior and terminology of the application you use: MakeMKV FAQ. A folder backup is not the same as a compressed movie file; it preserves more of the disc’s structure and usually consumes more space than a playback encode.

Stage 2: transcode for playback or storage

HandBrake can convert video to formats including MP4, MKV, and WebM, with controls for cropping, resizing, and subtitle handling. It always converts the video; it does not simply pass the original video through unchanged. Read its versioned documentation before choosing settings: HandBrake: About HandBrake.

HandBrake also states, “HandBrake also does not defeat or circumvent copy protection of any kind.” That means HandBrake alone is not a solution for protected commercial discs. It needs files that it can legally open, created by another application or workflow. Do not treat a failed HandBrake scan as proof that the drive or disc is defective.

Copy protection and disc variants

Protected commercial discs

Many commercial DVDs and Blu-rays use technical protection. The reading application, the disc type, and the law where you live all affect what you can do. A workflow that works with a home-authored disc may fail on a retail release, and success with one title does not establish universal compatibility.

BD+ and required support

Some Blu-rays use BD+. MakeMKV explains that processing BD+ discs depends on the necessary SVQ and key support; therefore, do not promise that every Blu-ray will open merely because the drive is Blu-ray-capable. Consult the current technical information for your software and disc: MakeMKV: About BD+ and SVQ files.

Plan storage before you start

Decide what you are retaining

You have three broad choices:

  • Disc-sized source copy: retain a folder or other minimally processed copy for preservation and future conversion. This uses more space and keeps more of the source structure.
  • Playback encode: transcode to a smaller file for everyday viewing. This saves space but changes the video and may omit menus, extras, or tracks you did not select.
  • Both: keep a source copy and create one or more playback files. This offers the most flexibility but requires the most storage and processing time.

Estimate capacity from a representative sample of your actual DVDs and Blu-rays using the output settings you intend to keep. Disc sizes vary, and a high-quality encode, a lower-size encode, and a folder backup produce very different totals. Include temporary working space because conversion software may create intermediate files.

Use current storage and a second copy

The U.S. National Archives warns that optical media, including DVDs and Blu-rays, create long-term preservation challenges and recommends copying content into a current storage environment. Its guidance is available in Machine-Readable Media. For a home collection, that means treating the digitized files as the primary working copy and maintaining an additional backup on separate storage. The archive guidance does not prescribe a particular home NAS, drive size, or backup schedule, so choose those based on your measured collection and risk tolerance.

Step-by-step digitizing workflow

  1. Inventory the discs. Record title, season or volume, edition, region markings, and whether the disc is DVD or Blu-ray. Note alternate cuts, bonus discs, and languages you want to preserve.
  2. Check the computer and drive. Confirm the optical drive appears in the operating system, has the required connection and power, and is rated for the media you are about to read. Test with a disc you can replace or reread before committing to a large batch.
  3. Create a storage structure. Make separate locations for source copies, converted files, temporary work, and verified backups. Use enough free space for the largest expected job rather than only the final file size.
  4. Read one disc with your disc-reading application. Inspect the titles and streams it presents. Select the main feature or the material you intentionally want, and preserve required audio and subtitle tracks. For a preservation copy, follow the application’s documented backup mode.
  5. Keep the first result as a source. Do not overwrite the initial copy with a smaller encode. Give it a clear name that includes the title and disc or season number.
  6. Open the source in your transcoder, if desired. In HandBrake, choose the source, select an output container such as MP4 or MKV, set the picture dimensions and cropping, and choose the audio and subtitle tracks. Remember that the result is a conversion, not an unchanged pass-through.
  7. Process a representative sample. Before queuing an entire collection, encode one DVD and one Blu-ray with your intended settings. Check picture quality, aspect ratio, chapter behavior, audio, subtitles, and playback on the devices you actually use.
  8. Verify and catalog. Play the resulting files from beginning to end or at least through representative sections, confirm the intended tracks, and record the filename and verification status. Fix naming or track-selection errors while the disc is still available.
  9. Back up the verified files. Copy them to the additional storage you planned, then test that the backup can be opened. Keep the physical discs until you are satisfied with the files and your backup.

Direct copies versus smaller encodes

Approach Storage use Processing What you retain
Disc-sized folder or source copy Usually larger; measure your own discs Reading and copying, with little or no video conversion More of the selected disc structure and source streams
Smaller transcode Usually less, depending on codec and settings Requires conversion time and temporary space Only the tracks, subtitles, chapters, and picture choices you select; video is changed
Both copies Highest requirement Reading plus conversion and backup operations A recoverable source and convenient playback files

Neither approach is automatically right for every collection. If future re-encoding or preservation matters, retain a source copy. If the goal is convenient streaming or limited storage, create a tested encode after deciding which tracks and extras are genuinely needed.

Legal limits vary by location

Copyright and anti-circumvention rules are jurisdiction-specific. In the United States, 37 CFR 201.40 lists defined, conditional exemptions involving protected DVDs and Blu-rays for particular purposes and eligible users; it is not a blanket permission for every consumer to bypass protection and copy every disc they own. Read the regulation at the U.S. Copyright Office and obtain qualified legal advice for an individual situation. Do not distribute copies or use a digitized collection in ways your local law does not allow.

Troubleshooting common failures

The computer cannot see the drive

  • Reconnect the USB cable, try a different compatible port, and check whether the drive needs separate power.
  • Confirm that the operating system lists the device and that any required driver or firmware is current according to the drive maker.
  • Test another known-good disc. If one disc fails while others work, the issue may be the disc rather than the connection.

A DVD works but a Blu-ray does not

Check that the mechanism is genuinely Blu-ray-capable, not merely labeled as a DVD writer. Recheck the disc format, region or edition, and the reading application’s support. A DVD-only drive cannot be upgraded by changing software.

The disc-reading application opens the disc but the title is wrong

Commercial discs may contain trailers, duplicate angles, bonus features, or several playlist entries. Preview duration, chapters, audio, and subtitles before choosing the title, then verify the exported file.

HandBrake will not scan a commercial disc

HandBrake does not circumvent copy protection. First create a source that the application is allowed and able to open, using a legally appropriate workflow, or use an unprotected disc for testing. Do not assume repeated scans or different presets will remove protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Blu-ray reports a BD+ or key-related problem

Review the current SVQ/key requirements documented for your software and the disc. Compatibility is not universal, and a Blu-ray-capable drive by itself does not supply the required processing support.

The output plays without the expected language or subtitles

Return to the source and explicitly select the desired audio and subtitle tracks during conversion. Test the file on the target player; automatic track selection is not guaranteed.

How to keep the collection usable

  • Use stable, descriptive names such as title, year or edition, season, disc, and feature rather than relying on the original disc label alone.
  • Keep subtitles and audio that are difficult to recreate, especially for multilingual households or accessibility needs.
  • Record which files are source copies and which are transcodes so you do not mistake a compressed playback file for your preservation master.
  • Periodically open files from both the main storage and backup. A backup that has never been tested is not a dependable recovery plan.
  • Retain the physical discs until the digitized files, metadata, and backups have been checked.
