An affiliate marketing website is more than a set of referral links: it is a maintained publishing operation that helps a defined audience make decisions, uses program-approved links, and clearly explains when a recommendation may earn a commission. To set one up, choose a reader need to serve, publish useful content on a maintained site, join relevant programs, disclose affiliate relationships near links, and keep content and links current.
What do you actually need to set up an affiliate marketing website?
You need a subject and audience need, a place to publish and maintain pages, useful content, access to affiliate programs that fit the subject, and a process for disclosures and upkeep. Those are operating requirements, not a promise of traffic or income. The official policies discussed here do not establish likely earnings, startup costs, a success rate, or a best hosting or publishing platform.
Choose a specific audience need
Decide what readers should be able to understand, compare, or do after visiting the site. A focused purpose gives the content a reason to exist beyond sending visitors to merchants. No subject or niche can be said, on the evidence available here, to guarantee search visibility or revenue.
Set up a site you can maintain
You need a publishing site where you can create pages and update them over time. The policy sources cited below do not compare site builders, self-managed publishing software, hosts, themes, or plugins, so they cannot establish which technical stack is best. Choose based on your own requirements for publishing, control, support, backups, accessibility, upkeep, and cost, and verify any product claims and current terms independently.

Publish useful material before centering the links
Build pages that answer real reader questions and support the choices you discuss. Affiliate monetization can support a website, but links alone do not make a useful publication or guarantee an outcome. Google Search Central says affiliate monetization is generally acceptable when links are qualified appropriately; its post on the topic was published July 26, 2021, so check current Google guidance before implementation.
How do affiliate links and disclosures work on a website?
An affiliate link identifies a referral through a program’s tracking format. If a visitor follows it and makes a qualifying purchase under the program’s rules, the publisher may earn a commission. Payment is conditional: a link does not guarantee a commission, and the program’s terms determine which purchases qualify.
Join programs and use their approved link formats
Each program sets its own participation requirements, link format, and commission conditions. Amazon’s Associates Operating Agreement permits eligible sites to monetize with properly formatted tagged Special Links, subject to the agreement and policies it incorporates. The agreement page says it was updated October 15, 2025. Check the current agreement and availability for your market before applying or publishing links: Amazon Associates Operating Agreement.
Disclose the relationship close to recommendations
Make clear to readers that you may earn a commission. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission advises that disclosures should be clear and conspicuous and placed close to the recommendation; a disclosure far from a link may not make the relationship clear. For example, the FTC gives the wording “I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post.” Read its guidance for context: FTC Endorsement Guides: What People Are Asking.

For Amazon Associates, Amazon also specifies this site statement: “As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.” Amazon says to display it clearly and conspicuously, and to put a clear disclosure near affiliate links or product reviews. The statement does not replace the need to make a particular recommendation’s commercial relationship apparent near the relevant content. See Amazon Associates Help.
Qualify affiliate links for Google Search
Google Search Central says to mark affiliate links with rel="sponsored". For example, an affiliate link can use See the offer. This markup identifies the link as sponsored for search engines; it is separate from the reader-facing disclosure. Google’s cited guidance is dated July 26, 2021: Google Search Central on qualifying links.
What ongoing work does an affiliate site require?
A site needs editorial maintenance after launch. Products, destination pages, and program rules can change, and a recommendation that no longer matches its page can mislead readers. Set a review routine appropriate to how quickly the subject changes; the cited sources do not prescribe a particular frequency or tool.
- Check that affiliate links still work and lead to the intended pages.
- Confirm that product details and recommendations remain accurate.
- Keep disclosures visible near the links and recommendations they apply to.
- Revisit program terms and current link-format requirements, including Amazon’s agreement if you participate.
- Review current Google Search guidance for link qualification rather than assuming a 2021 post is unchanged.
What this setup does not establish
The official materials cited here explain policy and link requirements, not the economics or technical choices of running a site. They do not establish expected earnings, conversion rates, traffic levels, startup budgets, or a platform that will succeed. They also do not provide a complete guide to laws outside the United States. Treat Amazon.com and FTC references here as U.S.-oriented guidance, and verify requirements for the countries and programs relevant to your readers.
