The practical way to build a “Nokia 3310 game” today is to make a small microcontroller project using an 84×48 monochrome Nokia 5110/3310-style LCD module. Pair the display with an Arduino-compatible board, the Adafruit PCD8544 display library and Adafruit GFX, then prototype the circuit on a solderless breadboard. This recreates the screen style; it does not install new software on an original Nokia 3310 handset.
You will need to verify the exact LCD breakout’s pin order, controller compatibility and voltage before applying power. The same-looking modules are not guaranteed to be wired identically, and the documented guides do not establish compatibility for every current third-party board.
What “build a Nokia 3310 game” actually means
The well-supported maker route is a new circuit built around a Nokia-style graphic LCD. The display is commonly a PCD8544-compatible 84×48-pixel, black-and-white module. Your program runs on the microcontroller, which sends pixels and commands to that module.

The phone’s firmware, processor, memory and internal display interface are a closed, model-specific system; the available evidence does not establish a supported homebrew game-development workflow for the handset. The MAME Nokia 3310 emulation source models handset hardware for emulation. It is useful evidence that the hardware can be modeled in software, not an installation method for writing games to a retail phone.

Throughout this guide, “Nokia 3310 game” means a game displayed on a modern 5110/3310-style LCD unless the original handset is explicitly mentioned.
Core hardware and tools
A first prototype can be assembled with a small set of parts. The exact listing is less important than the electrical and software interfaces it provides.
| Item | What it does | What to verify before buying or wiring |
|---|---|---|
| 84×48 Nokia 5110/3310-style LCD | Renders the game’s monochrome graphics. These modules are generally driven through a PCD8544-compatible interface and are often backlit. | Controller, pin names and order, supply voltage, logic voltage, backlight connection, connector style and library examples for your board. |
| Arduino-compatible microcontroller board | Runs the game code and communicates with the LCD. | Available digital outputs, voltage levels, RAM and the board’s supported library toolchain. |
| Solderless breadboard | Lets you change wiring while you test the design. | Enough rows for the controller, display header and any controls you add. |
| Jumper wires | Connect the LCD breakout to the controller without making a custom PCB. | Correct connector style and secure contact. A product page used in Adafruit’s example lists a wire bundle as out of stock, so treat that listing as an example of the supply category rather than a current stock recommendation. |
| Optional input hardware | Buttons, a small joystick or another input device can provide movement and action controls. | Choose a wiring scheme that leaves enough controller pins for the LCD and any future features. |
Adafruit’s Nokia 5110/3310 Monochrome LCD guide is the reference for the Arduino-oriented build. It describes a backlit 84×48 display and says the module uses three to five digital output pins, depending on how chip-select and reset are handled, with another pin available if you want software control of the backlight. The guide also warns, in effect, that you must check the particular breakout before wiring it.
The display is the main constraint
An 84×48 screen gives you a compact monochrome canvas rather than a modern color display. Every character, sprite, status indicator and menu must remain recognizable at that resolution. The documented graphics stack supports text, bitmaps, individual pixels, rectangles, circles and lines, which is enough for tile-like rooms, simple vehicles, score displays and other deliberately low-resolution designs.

Do not infer a frame-rate, latency or game-performance guarantee from the display specification. The cited documentation establishes the resolution and drawing operations, but it does not provide a benchmark for a particular board, wiring length or game.
Why an Arduino-compatible board is the simplest starting point
The tutorial path is written for an Arduino-compatible controller, so it is the easiest route when you want a known set of examples and wiring guidance. It is not a requirement that every project use Arduino hardware. The display library can be ported to other microcontrollers if you can provide the required digital signals and adapt the code to that platform’s APIs.
Software you need
The named software path consists of two libraries:
- Adafruit PCD8544 Nokia 5110 display library: handles the LCD’s controller interface and includes example code.
- Adafruit GFX: supplies drawing primitives and support for text and bitmap graphics.
The Adafruit downloads page documents these libraries and notes that the display library buffers the entire screen in about one-half kilobyte of RAM. That buffer is small by modern standards but significant on an entry-level microcontroller, so leave RAM for your game state, input handling and sprite data.

How to choose a compatible LCD breakout
Two listings can both say “Nokia 5110” and still require different wiring. Compare these properties before ordering:
| Check | Why it matters | How to handle uncertainty |
|---|---|---|
| PCD8544 compatibility | The library and examples target this controller family. | Prefer a listing that names the controller or supplies a schematic; do not assume a similar-looking panel uses the same command set. |
| Pin names and order | A reversed header can put power or signals on the wrong pins. | Read the board’s silkscreen and schematic, then map each signal to the library’s configuration. |
| Supply and logic voltage | The LCD and the microcontroller must receive levels they can tolerate. | Follow the breakout’s electrical specifications, not a generic 5110 pinout. |
| Backlight wiring | Some boards expose a separate light-control connection. | Decide whether it is permanently powered or controlled by a spare output, and check the required current path. |
| Connector style | Header spacing and orientation affect breadboard assembly. | Choose a header that can be seated securely or plan an adapter. |
| Examples for your controller | Working examples shorten bring-up time. | Confirm that the code can be configured for your board’s digital pins. |
One documented example is Olimex’s MOD-LCD3310. Olimex describes it as an 84×48 black-and-white Nokia 3310 LCD and publishes a schematic and software examples. Its listed price and stock can change, so use the page to inspect documentation and specifications rather than treating the displayed commercial details as permanent.
Build the first prototype safely
Use this order to separate electrical problems from programming problems.
- Inventory the boards. Record the exact LCD part or breakout revision, its printed pin labels and its stated supply and logic voltage. Record the controller board’s operating voltage as well.
- Read the schematic or pinout. Identify power, ground, serial clock, serial data, command/data selection, reset, chip select and any backlight connection. Do not rely on the physical order used by a different module.
- Plan the pin assignment. Reserve three to five controller digital outputs for the LCD signals, depending on the breakout and how reset or chip select are handled. Reserve another output only if you intend to control the backlight in software.
- Place the controller and LCD on the breadboard. Keep the signal wires short and route power and ground first. Avoid plugging or unplugging the display while the circuit is energized.
- Connect power only after checking voltage. A 3.3-volt-only breakout must not be treated as a generic 5-volt accessory. If the listing does not clearly state its tolerance, find its schematic or manufacturer specification before proceeding.
- Install the documented libraries. Add the PCD8544 display library and Adafruit GFX using the method supported by your development environment, then open one of the supplied examples.
- Configure the example for your pins. Replace the example’s pin definitions with the assignments you verified from your module’s documentation. Compile and upload without adding game code yet.
- Run a visual test. Confirm that text and simple shapes appear in the expected orientation and that the backlight behaves as planned. This test proves the display path before you spend time debugging sprites or input.
- Add controls and game state incrementally. Connect one input at a time, read its state, and display a temporary indicator. Then add movement, collisions, scoring and menus as separate pieces so a new fault has a small search area.
Designing a game for 84×48 pixels
Choose a visual scale
At this resolution, a one-pixel change can alter the shape of a character or the readability of a letter. Decide early whether the game uses individual pixels, a fixed tile grid or bitmap sprites. Fixed-width fonts and high-contrast silhouettes are easier to read than detailed illustrations.

Use the available drawing primitives deliberately
Lines and rectangles are useful for borders, gauges and simple obstacles. Circles can represent balls, wheels or cursor targets. Bitmaps are appropriate for sprites and title art, while text is best reserved for short labels, scores and status values. The PCD8544 and GFX examples demonstrate these operations; adapt them to the game’s scale rather than attempting to reproduce a full-color console interface.
Budget memory as well as pixels
The display library’s full-screen buffer consumes roughly one-half kilobyte of RAM. Keep maps, animation frames and text data compact, and avoid allocating large temporary arrays on a small controller. If a design needs more graphics than the board can hold, reduce the number of simultaneous sprites or store repeated shapes as drawing code instead of separate bitmaps.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Arduino versus the legacy Raspberry Pi route
An older Adafruit guide documents using a Raspberry Pi or BeagleBone Black over SPI, with 3.3-volt wiring. That guide is marked discontinued and points readers to the newer monochrome LCD material: Nokia 5110/3310 LCD Python Library. Treat it as a legacy alternative, not the primary setup procedure.
The Pi-style route can make sense if your project already uses Python and a Linux board, but it adds a different software stack and voltage assumptions. For a first game, the Arduino-compatible path has the clearest documented examples. Whichever host you choose, the LCD breakout’s own voltage requirements remain authoritative.

Common bring-up failures and fixes
The screen is completely blank
- Check ground and power continuity first.
- Confirm that the LCD’s reset, chip-select and command/data signals match the pin definitions in the sketch.
- Verify that the module is receiving the voltage it specifies.
- Run the library’s example unchanged except for verified pin assignments; this distinguishes a wiring fault from a game-code fault.
The screen shows random blocks or unreadable text
- Recheck the order of clock and data lines; similarly named headers are not universal.
- Check that the selected controller/library combination is actually PCD8544-compatible.
- Shorten loose jumper wires and reseat the LCD header.
- Make sure the display initialization in the example has not been replaced by an incompatible configuration.
The backlight works but no graphics appear
Backlight power does not prove that the LCD controller is initialized. Treat the light and the display signals as separate circuits: verify the logic wiring, reset behavior and library setup independently.
The image is clipped or rotated
Check the library’s display geometry and orientation settings after confirming the wiring. A correctly powered module can still render outside the visible area if the software’s dimensions or rotation do not match the panel.
The controller resets when the game runs
Inspect the power connections and reduce unnecessary load while testing. Also review RAM usage: the full-screen buffer is about one-half kilobyte before your own game data, so large bitmap tables can exhaust a small board.

Can you install your own game on an original Nokia 3310?
Not on the evidence available for this project. The documented instructions cover external Nokia-style LCD modules driven by a separate controller, and the emulator source describes modeled handset hardware. Neither establishes a supported method for replacing an original phone’s firmware or loading a custom game onto retail 3310 hardware.
If your goal is the classic display, controls and visual character, build the standalone module project. If your goal is original-phone modification, you would need model-specific reverse engineering, a development and flashing path, and hardware documentation that are outside the documented Arduino/LCD workflow.
A practical purchase and build checklist
- 84×48 monochrome Nokia 5110/3310-style LCD, with PCD8544 compatibility confirmed.
- Arduino-compatible microcontroller board, or another MCU you are prepared to support with a ported library.
- Solderless breadboard and suitable jumper wires.
- Optional buttons or joystick, planned around the LCD’s pin usage.
- Adafruit PCD8544 display library and Adafruit GFX installed from their documented sources.
- Verified pinout, supply voltage, logic voltage and backlight wiring for the exact breakout.
- A small display-test sketch that works before game code is added.
With those pieces, you have a reproducible 3310-style game platform: a separate microcontroller, a documented monochrome graphics library and an 84×48 screen whose limitations become part of the game’s design.
