You can plug a code reader, a phone or computer adapter, a live-data monitor, an emissions-readiness tool, or a connected telematics tracker into a car’s OBD2 port. The right choice depends on whether you want to diagnose a warning light, check inspection readiness, or collect vehicle data—and on what your specific vehicle supports.
What the OBD2 port is for
On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) monitors emissions-control and emissions-related components, along with some engine components. When the vehicle detects a malfunction or deterioration that may affect emissions, its computer can turn on the Check Engine or Service Engine Soon lamp; sometimes it detects a problem before you notice a symptom. The EPA explains the system’s purpose and warning lamp.
A plug-in device retrieves information the vehicle makes available; it does not automatically identify the root cause or guarantee a repair. Standard OBD-II information is mostly emissions-related. Reading other systems—such as ABS, airbags (SRS), or tire-pressure monitoring (TPMS)—requires enhanced, vehicle-specific support, and is not universal.
Eight useful things to plug into the port
1. Handheld OBD-II code reader
A basic scan tool with its own screen can retrieve standard diagnostic trouble codes without a phone or computer. A code narrows down the monitored system or fault; it is not, by itself, a diagnosis or a parts-replacement instruction. Look up the code using reliable repair information and consider the vehicle’s symptoms before deciding what to do.

- CEL Doctor: The ANCEL AD310 is one of the best-selling OBD II scanners on the market and is recommended by Scotty Kilmer, a YouTuber and auto mechanic. It can easily determine the cause of the check engine light coming on. After repairing the vehicle's problems, it can quickly read and clear diagnostic trouble codes of emission system, read live data & hard memory data, view freeze frame, I/M monitor readiness and collect vehicle information

The AD310 is not only portable, but also accurate and fast in performance. Moreover, it covers various car brands and is suitable for people who just need a code reader to check their car
2. Bluetooth scan adapter and phone
A Bluetooth adapter sends supported vehicle data to a compatible mobile app. This can be convenient for reading codes or viewing data on a phone, but compatibility depends on the vehicle, adapter, app, and phone operating system. Check supported protocols, voltage rating, and wireless-security information as well as the advertised features.
3. USB adapter and computer
A USB adapter connects the car to a computer for diagnostics through compatible software. OBDLink lists USB adapters and OBDwiz for Windows, as well as mobile-app support; confirm the exact adapter and operating-system requirements before buying. A USB connection is a computer-oriented alternative to a wireless phone adapter, not a guarantee of broader vehicle coverage.

5. Enhanced system diagnostic reader
Some scan tools can retrieve module codes beyond standard emissions-related diagnostics—for example, ABS, SRS, or TPMS codes—on supported vehicle and adapter combinations. Check coverage for your exact year, make, and model; a listing that says “all systems” should not be assumed to mean every module on every car.

This automotive diagnostic scanner is designed for wide vehicle coverage; please check compatibility with your vehicle before purchase
6. Emissions-readiness monitor
A compatible tool or app can show emissions-monitor results, which may help you check readiness before an inspection. The EPA describes OBD checks as part of vehicle inspection and maintenance programs, where readiness can affect inspection operations. Readiness is not a repair, and a displayed result does not guarantee a pass under local rules. Check your jurisdiction’s current inspection requirements. EPA’s inspection and maintenance resource links to program and readiness information.
Do not clear codes to try to pass an inspection. Clearing them does not fix the fault and can affect readiness; follow local guidance and address the underlying problem.

7. Fleet GPS or telematics tracker
Fleet OBD trackers can send location, engine-diagnostic, trip, or driver-behavior data to a connected management platform. Geotab describes its GO device as providing fleet managers location, diagnostics, driver-behavior information, and alerts; Trackem describes trip and location information along with driver monitoring and odometer data. These are platform-connected fleet tools, not simply code readers, so check service requirements, data handling, and fit for your fleet.

8. Usage-based insurance telematics device
OBD tracking devices are also described as having usage-based insurance applications. That describes a category, not a confirmed current offer from a particular insurer. Whether a program is available, what data it collects, and whether it affects a premium depend on the insurer and location; verify the terms and data policy directly with your insurer.

Check compatibility before you buy
OBDLink says its adapters work with OBD-II-compliant US cars and light trucks from model year 1996 onward. That is vendor guidance for its adapters, not a universal guarantee for every product. OBD-II compliance depends on the vehicle’s intended sales region, and OBDLink cautions that hybrid and electric vehicles may not work with its adapters. Verify your exact year, make, and model and the features you need with the device maker. OBDLink’s support information describes its compatibility guidance.
- Confirm the car is OBD-II compliant in its original sales region.
- Check standard code support separately from enhanced module coverage.
- Match Bluetooth or USB to the phone, tablet, or computer you plan to use.
- Check protocol support, voltage rating, app or software requirements, and wireless-security details.
- For a tracker, confirm that the connected platform and service are available and appropriate for your use.
Know what a scan tool cannot establish
Access to emissions-related service information does not make a basic scanner equivalent to a manufacturer-level service tool. The EPA’s Freedom to Fix page, updated July 1, 2026, says manufacturers must provide emissions-related service information, including OBD data and enhanced diagnostics, along with repair information. That information requirement does not mean every consumer device can retrieve every available item or diagnose a repair on its own.
