Amazon EKS still operates the Kubernetes control plane; its advanced configuration lets you tune selected, validated settings that influence cluster behavior. You do not get direct ownership of API server hosts or permission to set arbitrary control-plane flags. The exposed settings apply cluster-wide, and some require the Provisioned Control Plane model.
What control-plane settings can you change in EKS?
AWS documents supported advanced settings for the scheduler, controller manager, and API server. Examples include scheduler resource scoring, the Horizontal Pod Autoscaler (HPA) controller sync period, the terminated-pod garbage-collection threshold, API event retention, and the service NodePort range. EKS validates configured values; supported fields, defaults, and bounds depend on the Kubernetes version.
These are workload-affecting controls, not merely cosmetic settings. AWS cautions that the right value depends on the workload. Changes are cluster-wide rather than scoped to a namespace or application, so test them outside production before applying them to a live cluster.

| Setting | Placement tendency | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
LeastAllocated |
Favors nodes with more remaining capacity, tending to spread placements and preserve headroom. | Can leave more nodes lightly used, which may limit opportunities for node-pool consolidation. |
MostAllocated |
Favors nodes that are already more utilized, tending to pack workloads onto fewer nodes. | Can help node pools with consolidation remove lightly used nodes, but concentrates more workloads on the nodes and Availability Zones that remain in use. |
Changing the strategy does not automatically move pods that are already running; it affects scheduling decisions going forward. Packing workloads can reduce compute use in suitable environments, but it also raises the impact of a node or Availability Zone failure for workloads concentrated there. These are operational trade-offs, not guaranteed performance or savings results.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Controller and API-server settings
- HPA sync period: A shorter interval can make scaling decisions happen sooner, while increasing reconciliation requests and reducing how many HPA objects the controller can process on schedule. Changing this setting requires Provisioned Control Plane.
- Terminated-pod garbage-collection threshold: This controls when terminated pods are deleted. A lower threshold can increase work against the cluster database. This setting also requires Provisioned Control Plane.
- API event retention: Adjusting retention can help with event-heavy clusters, but a shorter period leaves less time to use in-cluster events for troubleshooting.
- Service NodePort range: A custom range can match network policy or application requirements. Before changing it, check firewall and security-group rules and look for port conflicts.
The available documentation does not establish a complete set of Provisioned Control Plane tiers, prices, or regional availability here. Check current AWS documentation for those details and for the version-specific supported values before choosing a configuration.
How do API endpoint access and control-plane logs work?
Endpoint access and logging are separate from advanced component settings: they govern who can reach the Kubernetes API and which control-plane activity is sent to a logging service.

Choose where the API endpoint can be reached
| Access configuration | What it means | Decision to make |
|---|---|---|
| Public | The cluster API endpoint is available through public access. | Decide whether administrators and automation need to connect from outside the cluster VPC, and define the appropriate security boundary. |
| Private | Requests originating in the cluster VPC use the private endpoint. Private access must be enabled to disable public access. | Confirm that the people and automation managing the cluster have the necessary private network connectivity. |
| Both | Public and private access are enabled. | Balance external management needs against the network exposure you intend to allow. |
Select control-plane logs
EKS can send these log types to CloudWatch Logs: API server, audit, authenticator, controller manager, and scheduler. They are off by default and can be enabled individually. Delivery is best effort and typically occurs within minutes; CloudWatch Logs ingestion and storage charges apply.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose log types based on the diagnostic questions you need to answer and your retention needs. Logging is not a substitute for deciding endpoint access: enabling logs does not change who can reach the API, and changing endpoint access does not enable logs.

What does EKS manage, and what remains your responsibility?
EKS manages control-plane infrastructure and core components such as the API server, scheduler, and controller manager. AWS says it manages the availability and scalability of control-plane nodes and replaces unhealthy ones. Advanced configuration exposes only selected parameters; it does not transfer control of the underlying hosts or permit arbitrary flags.
AWS performs rolling updates of API server instances during Kubernetes version updates. It can also roll out platform versions incrementally within a Kubernetes minor version. Those service-managed operations do not remove the operator’s responsibility to monitor cluster health or check application compatibility.

How should you plan a Kubernetes version upgrade?
The control plane is upgraded separately from worker nodes and related components. Treat an upgrade as a coordinated change across the cluster rather than assuming that EKS will update every dependency for you.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Review upgrade insights and identify deprecated API use before selecting a target version.
- Check the supported version path and prepare applications and clients for the change; test application behavior before upgrading production.
- Upgrade the control plane, then plan compatible updates for worker nodes and add-ons such as VPC CNI, CoreDNS, and kube-proxy.
- Monitor cluster health and confirm that workloads, clients, and add-ons operate as expected after the transition.
AWS’s upgrade policy documentation states that standard support lasts 14 months after a Kubernetes minor version is released, followed by 12 additional months of extended support at an added per-cluster-hour cost. A cluster’s upgrade policy can determine whether it enters extended support or is automatically upgraded when standard support ends. Verify applicable support dates, policy behavior, and charges in AWS’s current documentation before planning around them.

How to choose settings without increasing operational risk
- Start with workload behavior: Decide whether scheduling should favor spreading work or packing it, and account for both headroom and failure concentration.
- Check scope and prerequisites: Treat advanced values as cluster-wide. Confirm whether a setting requires Provisioned Control Plane before designing around it.
- Validate against the running Kubernetes version: Use
DescribeClusterVersionsand current AWS documentation to check available settings, defaults, and bounds rather than carrying values over from an older version. - Make network and observability decisions separately: Choose endpoint access based on administrator and automation connectivity; enable only the log types that serve your diagnostic needs and budget for CloudWatch charges.
- Stage changes: Test configuration and upgrade effects outside production first, then monitor the workloads and cluster components affected by the change.
