X-ray microscopy can show structures and chemical changes inside materials that surface imaging cannot reach. In battery research, it is used to map particles, pores, cracks, connected pathways, elemental distributions and chemical states, sometimes in three dimensions and sometimes while a cell is operating. The resulting images are evidence about how a material behaves; they are not, by themselves, proof that a commercial battery is safe, long-lived or high-performing.
What X-ray microscopy measures
X-ray microscopy measures how X-rays pass through a sample or otherwise interact with it. The transmitted intensity, photon energy and direction change according to the material’s thickness, density, composition and electronic state. By recording those changes with suitable optics and detectors, researchers can infer internal structure without cutting the entire sample open.
That penetrating ability is the central difference from many surface-focused methods. An X-ray image can include particles and voids below the surface of an electrode, catalyst or fuel-cell component. However, an image is an indirect measurement: contrast must be interpreted using the beam energy, instrument geometry, calibration, sample composition and analysis method. A bright or dark region does not automatically identify a unique chemical compound.

Instrument capabilities vary. Energy range, focusing optics, detector design, field of view, spatial and time resolution, sample environment and reconstruction software determine what a particular microscope can actually reveal. “X-ray microscopy” is therefore an umbrella term, not a guarantee that every instrument provides chemical mapping, nanometre-scale detail, tomography and operando operation at the same time.

Imaging modes and the questions they answer
| Mode or measurement | What it records | What it can reveal | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-field transmission X-ray microscopy (TXM) | A magnified projection of transmitted X-rays across a field of view | Particle shape, pores, cracks and other absorption or structural contrast over an area | Usually a projection unless views are collected for tomography; contrast is not automatically a chemical identification. |
| Scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) | A focused beam scanned point by point while transmission is measured | Fine-scale maps of absorption and, when energy is varied, chemical-state differences | Spatial coverage and acquisition time depend on the scan and selected energy points. |
| Tomography | Projections acquired as the sample rotates through multiple angles | A reconstructed three-dimensional representation of morphology, pores, particles and connected pathways | Reconstruction quality depends on angular sampling, alignment, segmentation and the sampled volume. |
| X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) imaging | Images collected at multiple energies around an absorption edge | Maps of oxidation or other chemical-state variations | Interpretation generally requires reference spectra, energy calibration and a suitable model. |
| Multi-energy tomography | Tomographic datasets at more than one X-ray energy | Three-dimensional elemental or composition-related heterogeneity | Elemental separation depends on energy selection, concentration, thickness and signal quality. |
| In situ or operando imaging | Measurements in an environmental cell or during an imposed reaction or battery cycle | Structural and chemical evolution under controlled conditions | The cell, windows, pressure, temperature, current and radiation dose constrain what can be measured. |
Tomography turns a set of two-dimensional projections into a three-dimensional estimate. Spectroscopic measurements add an energy dimension, so researchers can distinguish states that look similar at a single energy. Combining both ideas can produce three-dimensional chemical-state or elemental maps, but only when the beamline and experiment are designed for that purpose.
What it can reveal inside batteries
Electrode architecture
Battery electrodes are composite structures containing active-material particles, conductive additives, binder and pores filled with electrolyte. Three-dimensional X-ray tomography can show particle sizes and shapes, voids, cracks and the pathways through which electrolyte and ions move. From a reconstructed volume, researchers can calculate quantities such as porosity and tortuosity. Tortuosity describes how much longer a transport path is through a porous network than a straight path; it is a structural descriptor, not a direct measurement of a cell’s power or lifetime.
Because electrodes are heterogeneous, the field of view matters. A highly detailed scan of one particle or a small region may expose a local failure mechanism while missing larger-scale variations across the electrode. Researchers therefore have to balance resolution against the volume represented by the measurement.

Changing the X-ray energy can produce contrast between elements or between different chemical states of the same element. XANES imaging is used to map chemical-state distributions in two dimensions, while energy-dependent tomography can extend that information into three dimensions. These maps can show whether reaction products, oxidation states or composition gradients are uniform or concentrated near particular particles, interfaces or pores.

Such conclusions require calibration and analysis. Reference spectra, segmentation choices and assumptions about overlapping signals affect the result. Single-energy absorption contrast alone should not be presented as a definitive chemical label.
Changes during charge and discharge
In situ experiments place a prepared sample in an experimental environment; operando experiments measure it while it is performing its intended electrochemical function. Battery cells designed for X-ray access can be cycled while images are acquired. Researchers can then follow particle expansion, fracture, pore evolution, deposition, dissolution or changes in chemical state as a function of state of charge and cycle history.
Operando measurements matter because a static, post-mortem sample can hide transient behavior. The voltage, current, temperature and cell design still define the experiment, so observations made under one laboratory setup should not automatically be generalized to every commercial cell.

Degradation and failure mechanisms
X-ray tomography has been used to investigate battery structure, composition, operation and degradation. A sequence of scans may reveal where cracks initiate, how pores close, how material becomes electrically isolated or where reaction products accumulate. Chemical imaging can help connect those structural changes with local composition or oxidation-state changes.

These observations support a mechanism: for example, a region that repeatedly fractures and loses contact may explain a rise in resistance. They do not constitute a standalone pass/fail test. Demonstrating a safety risk, cycle-life limit or performance advantage requires electrochemical measurements, thermal or mechanical tests and statistically representative samples in addition to imaging.
Why researchers combine X-rays with other methods
X-rays are sensitive to many structural and elemental features, but some contrasts are weak or ambiguous. Neutron tomography can add sensitivity to lithium and hydrogen-containing materials in situations where X-ray data do not clearly identify the feature of interest. Simultaneous or complementary neutron and X-ray measurements can therefore separate information that either modality alone might leave uncertain.
The choice is question-driven. If the question concerns pore geometry, absorption-contrast tomography may be sufficient. If it concerns lithium or hydrogen distribution, neutron information may be valuable. If it concerns oxidation state, energy-dependent X-ray spectroscopy is more appropriate than a single-energy scan. No modality removes the need for controls, calibration and independent measurements.
Applications beyond batteries
Transmission X-ray microscopy is also used to study catalysts and fuel cells. In these materials, the same general questions recur: how pores and connected pathways are arranged, where elements are distributed, and how chemical states change under operating conditions. Ex situ scans can characterize a material before or after use; in situ and operando experiments can observe evolution during reaction.

The suitable configuration depends on the sample’s thickness, composition, operating environment and required resolution. A setup optimized for a thin catalyst particle may not accommodate a complete fuel-cell layer, and a high-resolution scan of a small region may not represent an entire device.
How a battery X-ray microscopy experiment is designed
- Define the decision the measurement must inform. Specify whether the target is morphology, porosity, tortuosity, an element, a chemical state, a degradation event or a change during cycling. This prevents collecting an attractive image that cannot answer the engineering question.
- Select the measurement state. Use an ex situ sample for a snapshot, an in situ cell for controlled environmental conditions, or an operando cell for measurements during electrochemical operation. Record temperature, pressure, current, voltage and state-of-charge history.
- Match scale and field of view. Choose the smallest feature that must be resolved, then check whether the scanned volume is large enough to represent the heterogeneous electrode. A nanoscale-looking image of a tiny region can be misleading if the relevant variation occurs over millimetres.
- Prepare the sample and environment. Thickness, windows, sealing, electrolyte containment and electrode geometry affect transmission and artefacts. Preparation must preserve the state being studied and avoid introducing cracks or drying that would not occur in the operating cell.
- Choose contrast and energy points. Single-energy absorption can answer structural questions. Multiple energies, XANES or multi-energy tomography are needed when chemical-state or elemental differences are central. Energy selection should be based on the absorption edges and expected concentrations.
- Acquire projections or scans with dose and time in mind. Tomography requires many angular views; spectroscopy requires multiple energies. Longer acquisitions improve signal in some cases but can reduce temporal resolution and increase radiation exposure.
- Reconstruct and validate the data. Correct for alignment, background and detector effects, reconstruct the volume, and document segmentation rules. Compare features with standards, repeated scans or another modality where possible.
- Separate observation from conclusion. State exactly what the image shows, what model converts that observation into a mechanism, and which independent electrochemical or safety measurement supports the engineering claim.
How to choose between techniques
| Decision axis | Questions to ask | Typical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Dimensionality | Is a projection or map enough, or must connectivity and depth be known? | Use 2D imaging for local maps; use tomography for three-dimensional architecture. |
| Contrast and chemistry | Do you need density contrast, elemental distribution or oxidation-state information? | Choose absorption or structural contrast for morphology; add energy-dependent imaging for chemistry. |
| Measurement state | Must the material be observed before, after or during operation? | Ex situ is simpler; in situ and operando setups reveal evolution but add cell and environmental constraints. |
| Scale and representativeness | What feature size must be resolved, and how much material must be sampled? | Higher resolution generally covers a smaller region, so plan multiple locations or complementary scans. |
| Practical constraints | Can the sample tolerate preparation, beam exposure and acquisition time? | Radiation damage, motion, limited access and reconstruction workload may determine the feasible method. |
| Complementary information | Could another modality distinguish a feature that X-rays cannot? | Neutron imaging or electrochemical, spectroscopic or mechanical tests may be needed. |
Limitations that change how results should be read
Contrast is not identity
Absorption depends on thickness, density and energy, and several materials can produce similar intensity. Chemical identification normally needs energy-dependent data, reference information or another technique. A false-color segmentation map is an analytical interpretation, not a direct photograph of chemical species.
Radiation can alter the sample
Radiation damage is a recognized concern in transmission X-ray microscopy. The beam can change sensitive materials, accelerate reactions or create features that resemble natural degradation. Dose, exposure time and repeated scans should be reported, and unexposed or lower-dose controls can help test whether the observation is beam-induced.
Small volumes can misrepresent a cell
Battery electrodes contain distributions of particles, pores, binders and defects. One region may not represent the whole electrode, much less a production cell. Sampling plans, multiple locations and correlation with bulk measurements are necessary before making cell-level claims.

Operating cells impose compromises
Windows and holders must be X-ray transparent while remaining mechanically and chemically suitable. Their thickness can reduce signal; the holder can restrict rotation or add artefacts. Current density, temperature and cycling rate may differ from a commercial design. An operando result is therefore valid for the documented experimental conditions unless broader evidence demonstrates transferability.
A Berkeley Lab example: observing oxygen release
In a Berkeley Lab News Center interview published March 4, 2022, researchers described detailed X-ray measurements at the Advanced Light Source used to study oxygen release from nanoparticles in lithium-ion battery electrodes. The example illustrates why operating measurements are valuable: the team sought to follow physical and chemical evolution during cycling rather than infer it only from a material examined after the experiment.
William Chueh, a Stanford professor of materials science and engineering, summarized the distinction with the sentence, “A battery material is not like a rock.” In the same interview, he compared studying an operating battery with driving a car: “You’re not going to understand how a car works by not driving it.” These are explanations of why dynamic measurements matter, not evidence that X-ray images alone establish vehicle or battery performance.

- It can provide internal structural evidence about particles, pores, cracks and connected pathways.
- With suitable energy-dependent measurements, it can map elemental distributions or chemical-state differences.
- With tomography, it can reconstruct three-dimensional information from multiple views.
- With an appropriate in situ or operando cell, it can track changes under controlled conditions or during cycling.
- It cannot by itself certify a battery’s safety, predict its service life, establish a performance rating or prove that a mechanism applies to every cell.
The most reliable interpretation combines the image with calibration, representative sampling, dose controls, operating records and independent electrochemical or materials tests. X-ray microscopy is powerful because it connects internal structure and chemistry to change over time; its value depends on asking a precise question and stating the limits of what the measurement actually establishes.
