If the Solar System became dynamically unstable, changing gravitational interactions could alter planetary orbits and, in extreme modeled cases, cause collisions, ejections, or a planet to fall into the Sun. Earth’s fate would depend on which orbits changed and how much: it might remain in orbit while its climate shifted, or a severe change to Earth’s own path could threaten long-term habitability. The fact that the Solar System is chaotic does not mean a catastrophe is due.

What does an unstable Solar System mean?

Planets do not travel on perfectly fixed tracks. Their gravitational pulls continually perturb one another, so orbital elements such as eccentricity—the degree to which an orbit departs from a circle—can change. In a chaotic system, small differences in starting conditions can grow until long-term trajectories become difficult to predict precisely.

A 1992 numerical integration followed the planetary system for nearly 100 million years and found chaotic evolution, with an exponential-divergence timescale of about four million years. That timescale describes how quickly nearby modeled trajectories separate; it is not a countdown to a collision or other disaster. NASA Technical Reports Server, “Chaotic evolution of the solar system” (1992)

So “unstable” does not mean the planets suddenly lose their orbits. It describes the possibility that gravitational interactions can, over very long periods and under particular conditions, drive some orbits into much more extreme configurations.

How could orbital changes affect Earth?

Gradual changes can alter sunlight and climate

Changes in Earth’s eccentricity, tilt, and the orientation of its axis affect how sunlight is distributed by season and latitude. These orbital variations are part of natural climate cycles; NASA describes an approximate 100,000-year cycle in eccentricity and notes that Jupiter and Saturn influence variations in Earth’s orbit. Such cycles are not the same thing as a major destabilization of the Solar System. NASA Science, “Milankovitch (Orbital) Cycles and Their Role in Earth’s Climate” (2020; updated 2024)

A major change could have more severe consequences

If Earth’s orbit became substantially more eccentric or otherwise shifted, the changing Earth–Sun distance and sunlight reaching the planet could severely affect climate and long-term habitability. The available simulations do not calculate a specific Earth-orbit change for a general instability scenario, so they do not establish a temperature, timeline, or definite survival outcome.

Changes to other planets could also affect Earth indirectly as the planets’ gravitational interactions evolve. But an unstable inner Solar System does not automatically mean Earth must collide with another planet or be ejected.

What do the modeled instability scenarios show?

Different starting conditions and modeling choices can produce very different outcomes. A 2008 study reported one 20-billion-year integration without severe instability, while special bifurcation experiments explored trajectories that did become unstable. Those specially modeled paths are possibilities, not forecasts of what will happen. Batygin and Laughlin, “On the Dynamical Stability of the Solar System” (2008 preprint)

Case Modeled or expected consequence What it does not establish
Gradual orbital variation Earth remains bound, while changes in eccentricity, tilt, or precession alter the timing and distribution of sunlight; natural orbital cycles affect climate over tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of years. NASA Science It does not mean a major planetary instability is underway.
One specially modeled Mercury–Venus collision trajectory Mercury and Venus collided after about 862 million years in that simulation, and Mars was ejected around 822 million years into the same trajectory. Batygin and Laughlin (2008 preprint) It does not show that Earth must collide or be ejected.
Another specially modeled trajectory Mercury fell into the Sun after about 1.261 billion years in that simulation. Batygin and Laughlin (2008 preprint) It does not give a date for an event in the real Solar System.

External stellar flybys are another possible source of perturbations. A 2022 preprint reports simulations in which small changes to outer-planet orbits can be transferred among planets and raise the modeled chance of inner-system destabilization. This is a model-dependent result, not evidence that a flyby is putting Earth in imminent danger. Brown and Rein, “On the long-term stability of the Solar System in the presence of weak perturbations from stellar flybys” (2022 preprint; draft dated 2026-03-22)

Has the Solar System been unstable before?

Models of early Solar System history include a rearrangement of the giant planets roughly 50–500 million years after the Sun formed. NASA’s account says that this rearrangement may have shifted Uranus and Neptune and sent debris toward Earth. A possible Jupiter–Saturn orbital resonance has been proposed as a trigger, but the mechanism remains debated. This early history shows that large orbital rearrangements feature in scientific models of the Solar System’s past; it does not demonstrate that a similar event will recur. Does chaos mean the Solar System is about to fall apart?

No. A chaotic system can be difficult to predict precisely over immense spans of time without being on the verge of an imminent catastrophe. The four-million-year divergence timescale from the 1992 integration is about the separation of nearby calculated trajectories, not a predicted event date. Likewise, the extreme outcomes in later simulations depend on specially chosen modeled conditions.

The cited studies do not provide a probability that Earth will be destroyed in a generic instability scenario, a date for such an event, or a numerical climate forecast for a hypothetical altered Earth orbit. The sound conclusion is conditional: orbital changes could affect Earth’s climate, and sufficiently extreme changes could threaten habitability, but no single fate follows from the phrase “unstable Solar System.”
