If AI changes your work, start by mapping the tasks in your role, then discuss changes with your employer, build practical AI literacy, and prepare an adjacent-career plan before a crisis. If your job disappears, combine targeted training with public employment services and any income support available where you live.
AI exposure is not the same as job elimination
A job title can hide very different levels of risk. Generative AI may automate a few repetitive tasks, change how a whole role is performed, or contribute to a position being eliminated. The International Labour Organization (ILO) therefore evaluates tasks rather than treating every occupation as a single block. Its May 2025 explainer says few jobs consist entirely of tasks that current generative AI can automate and concludes that transformation is more likely than complete replacement.
That does not make disruption harmless. ILO economist Janine Berg has warned that people who lose work can face immediate unemployment and longer-term effects on employment and earnings. The practical response is to prepare for several possible outcomes at once: redesigned duties, redeployment, reduced hours, or a job search.
As Berg wrote in an October 9, 2024 ILO article, “The realist view, first and foremost, acknowledges that the outcomes are not set in stone.”

Step 1: Map the tasks that make up your job
Do not begin with the question “Will AI replace my occupation?” Begin with “Which parts of my week are changing, and which parts still require me?” Create a simple task inventory for a representative month.
- List recurring work. Include preparation, data entry, drafting, analysis, customer contact, physical activities, approvals, troubleshooting and follow-up. Estimate the hours each consumes.
- Mark tasks AI tools already affect. Note where your employer has introduced software, where colleagues are experimenting, and where vendors claim automation is coming.
- Mark human constraints. Identify work requiring local context, physical presence, responsibility for a decision, confidentiality, negotiation, empathy, relationship management or handling an unusual situation.
- Record consequences. For each task, ask whether AI is likely to speed it up, change the quality standard, require more checking, or remove it altogether.
- Identify evidence of value. Save examples of reduced errors, faster delivery, revenue protected, customers retained, incidents prevented or colleagues trained. These examples will support redeployment and applications later.
This exercise prevents an exposure estimate from becoming a personal verdict. A role with substantial automated drafting may still grow if the organization needs people to validate outputs, make accountable decisions or work with customers.
Step 2: Talk with your employer before a decision is made
Silence leaves you reacting to a finished plan. Request a specific conversation with your manager, human-resources team or worker representative about how work is changing. Ask:

- Which tasks or outputs are expected to change, and on what timetable?
- What work will remain important because it requires judgment, relationships, physical presence or accountability?
- What training, supervised practice or time to learn will be provided?
- Could you move to another team, take on quality assurance, customer-facing work or process design, or adjust duties and hours?
- What skills and results would qualify you for those roles?
The ILO identifies internal redeployment as one way to avoid job loss. Its discussion of the Termination of Employment Recommendation, 1982 (No. 166), encourages exploring measures such as adjusted working hours and hiring policies, with consultation, before termination where possible. Ask for commitments in writing and keep your own record of training requests, changed duties and performance evidence.
If a union, works council or other representative exists, involve it early. Collective consultation can reveal redeployment and training options that are invisible in an individual meeting.
Step 3: Build AI literacy that leads to useful work
Foundational AI literacy is a starting point, not a complete career plan. You should understand what a tool is designed to do, where it commonly fails, how to protect confidential information, how to check an output and how the tool fits into the organization’s workflow.

Progress from basics to a role-specific capability
- Learn the operating limits. Practice writing clear instructions, recognizing fabricated or unsupported answers, checking calculations and documenting the source of important information.
- Apply it to one real workflow. Choose a low-risk task such as drafting a first version, sorting requests or summarizing internal material. Compare the assisted result with your normal method and measure errors, rework and time saved.
- Add domain knowledge. Learn the rules, terminology, data standards and approval steps that make an output acceptable in your field. The person who can safely integrate a tool into a workflow is more valuable than someone who can merely demonstrate it.
- Move into specialized training. Depending on your role, this might involve data quality, process automation, model evaluation, cybersecurity, accessibility, records management or customer implementation. Choose training that appears in actual local job postings.
- Connect learning to advancement. The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) framework recommends visible next steps from foundational literacy to job-specific tools, specialized training and career advancement. Ask a manager or career adviser what evidence would demonstrate readiness for the next step.
Never upload employer, customer or personal data into a tool unless your organization has approved that use. Keep a human review for decisions affecting safety, legal rights, health, finances or employment.

The OECD has highlighted creative and social intelligence, reasoning and dealing with uncertainty alongside AI-related skills. These capabilities help people frame the right problem, interpret incomplete information, build trust and take responsibility for a decision. They are complements to technology, not a guaranteed shield from job loss.
- Reasoning: state assumptions, test alternatives and explain why a recommendation is sound.
- Communication: translate technical results for customers, colleagues and decision-makers.
- Relationship work: negotiate, coach, resolve conflict and maintain trust when circumstances change.
- Creative problem-solving: define a new process or service rather than only executing an existing one.
- Uncertainty management: recognize when evidence is weak, escalate appropriately and document the decision.
Make these abilities visible through project results, feedback, presentations, mentoring and examples of difficult cases handled well.

Step 5: Prepare an adjacent-career plan
Do this while employed if possible. Start with roles that use your existing industry knowledge, credentials, contacts or equipment. An adjacent move usually requires less time and money than starting in an unrelated field, although it may still require licensing or substantial training.
- Choose two or three target roles. Read current local postings and note repeated requirements, schedules, pay ranges where published and advancement routes.
- Translate your experience. Replace task descriptions with outcomes: volume handled, errors reduced, customers supported, systems introduced or risks controlled.
- Close the smallest important gap first. Prioritize a credential, portfolio example, supervised project or software skill that appears repeatedly in vacancies.
- Update your résumé and professional profiles. Include AI-assisted workflow improvements only when you can explain your review process and the result.
- Use public and workplace services. Contact a public employment service, union career office, employer training team or qualified career adviser before paying for a course.
Compare routes before committing
When several paths look plausible, compare them using the same questions:
- Transferability: How much of your knowledge, credentials and experience carries over?
- Local demand: Are employers nearby hiring, and what do their postings require?
- Training burden: How much time, money and prerequisite study are needed? Is paid learning available?
- Job quality: What are the likely pay, stability, schedule, safety, autonomy and advancement prospects?
- Accessibility: Can the route accommodate disability, caregiving, age-related needs, transport, broadband or language access?
- AI complementarity: Will the job use AI while retaining human judgment, relationships, physical work or accountability? Treat this as a design feature, not a promise of permanent protection.
These questions are decision aids, not a validated scoring system. A local adviser can help verify demand, eligibility and realistic training times.

If your job is eliminated
Act quickly, but do not accept the first course or job offer without checking its fit.
- Get the termination date, final-pay information, benefit continuation and any severance terms in writing.
- Apply promptly for unemployment insurance or other income support for which you may qualify. Rules and amounts depend on jurisdiction.
- Ask the employer about internal vacancies, redeployment, outplacement, retraining funds and references.
- Contact your national or regional labor ministry, public employment service, unemployment-benefit agency and union.
- Protect cash flow while searching, and be cautious about unverified promises of placement or earnings from private training providers.
The ILO describes unemployment insurance and other social protection, together with reskilling and upskilling, as measures that can give people time to seek quality reemployment. OECD AI Principles similarly say, “Governments should equip people with the skills for AI and support workers to ensure a fair transition.”
Location-specific support and limits
United States
The DOL framework says state and local workforce agencies may integrate AI literacy into services funded through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), including career navigation and training referrals. Availability, funding and eligibility differ by location, so contact your local American Job Center or state workforce agency and ask specifically about AI-related training, dislocated-worker services and supportive assistance. Do not assume that a programme or benefit exists nationally merely because it is offered in one state.
Singapore
Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower describes Career Conversion Programmes and the SkillsFuture Career Transition Programme as routes for reskilling and matching workers to new roles. The Ministry reports that close to nine in ten Career Conversion Programme participants aged 51 and above remained employed 24 months after embarking on the programme, measured over the preceding five years. That outcome applies to the named programme and participant group; it is not a guarantee for every learner. Check current eligibility, participating employers and course requirements directly with Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower and SkillsFuture services.
A practical 30-day preparation plan
Days 1–7: Understand your exposure
- Complete the task inventory and identify three tasks most likely to change.
- Collect evidence of results and update a private record of skills, credentials and contacts.
Days 8–14: Open the workplace conversation
- Request a meeting and use the questions above.
- Ask about training, redeployment and timelines; involve a representative where appropriate.
Days 15–21: Practice one relevant capability
- Use an approved tool on a low-risk workflow or complete a short, credible module.
- Document the review steps, errors found and measurable improvement.
Days 22–30: Test adjacent options
- Select two target roles and compare transferability, demand, training burden, job quality, accessibility and AI complementarity.
- Speak with a public career service or employer adviser and apply for one realistic project, course or vacancy.
Revisit the plan monthly. AI systems, employer policies and local vacancies change quickly, so your next move should be based on current tasks and verified opportunities rather than a broad prediction about your occupation.
