Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) is Microsoft’s activity-based framework for modeling and running workflows inside applications. A workflow is built from one activity or a tree of activities; a host process runs it through the WF runtime, which coordinates execution and services such as persistence and tracking. WF is not supported in .NET 6 or later, so existing WF documentation and examples should be treated as .NET Framework-specific unless a project explicitly uses another implementation.
What Windows Workflow Foundation means
Microsoft describes a workflow as a model of a real-world process, made up of elemental units called activities. The model expresses the order of work and dependencies between its parts. Those parts can represent short- or long-running tasks performed by people or by software systems. Microsoft’s Windows Workflow Overview
An activity is a unit of program behavior. A workflow can be a single activity or a tree of activities invoked by a host process. Microsoft’s WF glossary

How WF runs a workflow
Developers compose workflow definitions from activities, and a host application runs workflow instances through the WF runtime. Microsoft documents three hosting approaches:
#1 Best Overall
- WorkflowInvoker: invokes a workflow in a way similar to calling a method.
- WorkflowApplication: gives the host explicit control over an individual workflow instance.
- WorkflowServiceHost: supports message-based interactions in scenarios involving multiple instances.
Activities are CLR types. They can be composed declaratively or have behavior authored in managed code. Custom activities can use runtime facilities such as scheduling child activities, creating bookmarks, performing asynchronous work, and registering transactions. What the WF runtime provides
The runtime does more than sequence activities. Its environment supports flow control, exception handling and fault propagation, persistence of workflow state, loading and unloading in-progress workflows, tracking, and transaction flow. These facilities are relevant when an application must coordinate work that can pause, continue later, or involve multiple system or human tasks. Microsoft characterizes WF as raising the abstraction level for interactive, long-running applications. Windows Workflow Architecture

Is Windows Workflow Foundation supported in modern .NET?
No. Microsoft states that Windows Workflow Foundation is not supported in .NET 6 and later. Its porting guidance points to CoreWF as an alternative, but that pointer alone does not establish that a particular WF application, definition, or custom activity will work unchanged. Existing definitions, custom activities, persistence behavior, and integrations may require project-specific compatibility checks; consult the current documentation for the implementation and its packages rather than assuming .NET Framework WF APIs are available.

WF belongs to the .NET Framework technology family. Microsoft’s WF documentation and examples describe that framework context, including its activity model. They should not be read as proof that WF is built into current .NET releases. Microsoft’s Windows Workflow Foundation overview of .NET Framework-era changes
