Windows Dev Drive is not a gaming speed upgrade. It is a ReFS-based Windows 11 storage volume optimized for software repositories, package caches, build files, working directories and temporary development data. Microsoft does not document faster game loading on Dev Drive and explicitly says it does not recommend installing applications there. Keep games on a normal supported game volume unless a game developer provides separate evidence for your specific setup.

What Windows Dev Drive is designed to do

Dev Drive is a storage volume that uses Microsoft’s Resilient File System (ReFS), with filesystem and security settings aimed at developer workloads. Microsoft lists source-code repositories, package caches, working directories and temporary folders as the intended contents. The design addresses the large number of file creates, reads, writes and metadata checks that occur during builds and dependency management, rather than the loading behavior of consumer applications. See Microsoft’s setup documentation for the supported design and requirements: Set up a Dev Drive on Windows 11.

Microsoft’s guidance also separates development data from the tools that use it. Visual Studio, MSBuild and software development kits should remain on the normal C: volume, while the project trees and caches can reside on Dev Drive. The same guidance says: “The purpose of a Dev Drive is to host files for building and debugging software projects designated to store repositories, package caches, working directories, and temp folders. We do not recommend installing applications on a Dev Drive.” That is a use-policy statement, not merely a warning about a particular game launcher.

Why ReFS and file filters matter to developers

Development tools often touch thousands of relatively small files. A build may repeatedly inspect timestamps, open headers, write intermediate objects, update package caches and perform parallel file operations. Dev Drive’s filesystem configuration and its interaction with security filters are intended to reduce overhead in that pattern. Those optimizations are workload-specific: they do not turn every read from a Dev Drive into a faster read, and Microsoft has not published a game-loading benchmark comparing Dev Drive with NTFS.

How Defender performance mode works on a trusted Dev Drive

The feature most often associated with Dev Drive is Microsoft Defender performance mode. On a trusted Dev Drive in Windows 11, Defender can defer a scan until after a file-open operation completes. Microsoft describes the behavior this way: “The balance between threat protection and performance is achieved by deferring security scans until after the open file operation has completed, instead of performing the security scan synchronously while the file operation is being processed.” The technical description is in Protect Dev Drive using performance mode.

Performance mode is intended to preserve developer productivity while retaining real-time protection. Real-time protection must remain enabled for the documented mode to apply. Turning off Defender, excluding broad folders manually or disabling filesystem filters is not a safe substitute: it lowers protection and does not create a Microsoft-supported game-loading optimization.

The distinction is important. Deferring a scan can reduce the time a development tool waits while opening a source or build file. It does not establish that a game’s executable, archive, texture, shader or save-file sequence will load faster. A game may use different APIs, compression formats and background tasks, and Microsoft does not claim that performance mode accelerates those operations.

Does Windows Dev Drive make games load faster?

There is no documented Microsoft game-loading benefit. The reviewed Microsoft material describes Dev Drive as a place for software project files, says applications should not be installed there and provides no percentage, average or benchmark for game startup or level-loading time. The practical recommendation is therefore not to move or install games on Dev Drive expecting a supported or guaranteed improvement. This conclusion reflects Microsoft’s intended-use guidance and the absence of a game-specific claim; it does not prove that every game will behave identically on every computer.

Installing a game on a Dev Drive may also conflict with application support expectations. A launcher, anti-cheat component, mod manager or update service can have its own requirements for filesystem features, permissions and installation paths. If a publisher documents a supported ReFS installation or tests Dev Drive on a particular title, that separate documentation would be the relevant authority. Dev Drive’s existence alone is not evidence.

What actually contributes to a game’s loading time

Microsoft’s Windows game guidance identifies several mechanisms that can affect loading. A local hard drive can be faster than reading game content from source media, but that broad statement is not a Dev Drive comparison. Other contributors include the number of file-open operations, antivirus scanning, repeated file-existence or override checks, the way buffers and API calls are used, synchronous versus asynchronous I/O, background loading and conversion work performed on first launch. These details are discussed in Top Issues for Windows Titles and Installation and Maintenance of Games.

  • SPEED UP PROJECTS. Launch creator applications fast with uncompromising PCIe 4.0 read speeds up to 7,100MB/s,[2] (1TB and 2TB[1] models) and write speeds up to 6,700MB/s[2] (1TB[1]-4TB[1] models).

  • UNCOMPROMISED RELIABILITY. With up to 1,200 TBW[3] (4TB[1] model) endurance rating, your drive is designed for creators.
  • KEEP YOUR DRIVE UPDATED. Monitor your SSD’s performance and check for updates with the downloadable SANDISK Dashboard application.[5]

Those are game-implementation and system-workload factors. A title that spends several seconds compiling shaders, waiting for network services or decompressing assets may see little change from a different volume. Another title that performs many small synchronous reads can be more sensitive to storage latency and background activity. Without a controlled test of the same game, patch, save state, drive and system, assigning any observed difference to Dev Drive would be speculation.

Dev Drive versus a conventional game volume

The following comparison reflects Microsoft’s documented purpose and support guidance, not a gaming benchmark.

Question Conventional game volume Windows Dev Drive
Primary workload Games and other applications, subject to each publisher’s requirements Repositories, package caches, working directories and temporary development files
Filesystem May use NTFS or another filesystem supported by the game and Windows installation ReFS
Microsoft installation guidance Use the game’s supported installation location Microsoft says it does not recommend installing applications on Dev Drive
Defender treatment Normal real-time protection behavior for the volume Trusted Dev Drive can use performance mode, which defers scanning until after a file-open operation; real-time protection stays on
Game-loading benchmark Not established by the cited Microsoft pages Not stated by Microsoft sources
Copy performance feature Depends on the filesystem and operation ReFS block cloning is documented for Dev Drive on Windows 11 version 24H2 and Windows Server 2025; this concerns file copies, not game loading

Because the documented objectives differ, Dev Drive should not be treated as a special-purpose replacement for a game library. A normal supported volume is the conservative choice for launchers and games; Dev Drive is the specialized choice for development data.

Dev Drive requirements and limitations

  • Operating system: Microsoft’s current setup page describes Dev Drive for Windows 11. Requirements and labels can change, so check the page before creating a volume.
  • Minimum size: Microsoft documents a 50 GB minimum.
  • System drive: A Dev Drive cannot be the C: drive.
  • Memory: Microsoft recommends at least 8 GB of system memory and says 16 GB is ideal because ReFS uses slightly more memory than NTFS.
  • Removable media: Removable or hot-pluggable disks, including external hard disk drives and external solid-state drives, are not supported as Dev Drive volumes.
  • Security: Defender performance mode requires a trusted Dev Drive with Microsoft Defender real-time protection enabled. Do not disable antivirus protection to pursue speed.
  • Windows 11 24H2 and Server 2025: Microsoft documents ReFS block cloning on Dev Drive for copy operations. Block cloning does not constitute evidence of shorter game startup or level loads.

How to use Dev Drive for the workload it supports

If you develop software, Dev Drive can be useful for the files Microsoft identifies. The exact screens can change with Windows updates; use the current Microsoft instructions at Set up a Dev Drive on Windows 11 when the labels differ.

  1. Confirm the prerequisites. Use a supported Windows 11 system, a non-removable internal disk or supported fixed disk, at least 50 GB of available capacity and the recommended memory headroom.
  2. Open Windows storage management. In Settings, go to System and then Storage. Open the advanced storage options and choose the control for disks and volumes or the Dev Drive creation workflow shown by your Windows build.
  3. Create the volume. Select unallocated space or shrink an existing volume if necessary, choose the Dev Drive option, assign a drive letter other than C:, and format it as ReFS through the Windows workflow. Formatting removes data from the selected space, so back up files before changing partitions.
  4. Mark it as trusted when appropriate. Trust is a security decision for a drive containing your own development files. Do not mark an untrusted location as trusted merely to change scanning behavior.
  5. Place project data there. Store repositories, package caches, build output, working directories and temporary development files on the new volume. Keep Visual Studio, MSBuild, SDKs and other applications on the system volume as Microsoft advises.
  6. Verify protection status. Confirm Microsoft Defender real-time protection remains enabled. If performance mode is available for the trusted Dev Drive, Windows Security should report its status; do not rely on a manually disabled scan.

Why an external SSD is not a Dev Drive workaround

An external SSD can be useful for ordinary file storage when a game and its launcher support that arrangement, but a removable or hot-pluggable disk is not a supported Dev Drive target. Connecting a portable SSD and formatting it as ReFS does not turn it into a supported Dev Drive, and it does not supply a Microsoft-backed game-loading benefit. Treat external storage and Dev Drive as separate decisions.

How to investigate a slow game without blaming Dev Drive

When loading is slow, first identify which stage is slow. Time the same title from the same launch point and repeat the measurement after a reboot, because first-launch shader or asset conversion can differ from later launches. Record whether the delay occurs before the menu, while entering a level, when compiling shaders or while connecting to an online service. A volume change cannot fix a network wait or CPU-side conversion.

  • Check the installation path and support policy. Use the publisher’s supported library location. Do not force a game onto Dev Drive solely because its free space is convenient.
  • Observe background activity. A scan, update, indexing task or large copy can compete for storage and CPU time. Finish or pause legitimate maintenance tasks rather than disabling security software.
  • Separate cold and warm loads. The first run after boot may include shader compilation or cache creation; compare like with like.
  • Check for online dependencies. Login, matchmaking, cloud saves and downloadable content can add time unrelated to local filesystem throughput.
  • Look for game updates and driver changes. Loading behavior can change after a patch or graphics-driver update, so record versions when comparing results.

Microsoft’s guidance on installation and Windows titles is a better starting point for diagnosing file-open patterns, antivirus interaction, buffering and asynchronous I/O than changing a volume type without a controlled test.

Common misconceptions

“ReFS is newer, so every application must be faster.”

ReFS is selected here for a developer-focused workload, not as a universal speed setting. Filesystem behavior depends on the application’s access pattern, and Microsoft has not published a Dev Drive game-loading result.

“Defender performance mode means antivirus is off.”

No. The documented behavior defers a scan until after a file-open operation on a trusted Dev Drive while real-time protection remains enabled. Disabling protection is a different and riskier action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Block cloning will shorten level loads.”

Block cloning can make certain file-copy operations more efficient on supported Windows versions. Loading an already-installed game is a different operation, and Microsoft does not equate the two.

“If a game starts, the installation is supported.”

A game may launch even when its location is outside the vendor’s tested configuration. Updates, anti-cheat modules, mods or recovery tools can expose compatibility problems later. Follow the game and launcher documentation.

Bottom line

Use Dev Drive for repositories, package caches, build products and other development files. Do not choose it as a gaming optimization: Microsoft advises against installing applications on Dev Drive, documents no game-loading advantage and provides no benchmark showing that it beats a conventional game volume. Diagnose a slow game through its storage path, file-access pattern, shader and asset processing, background activity and network dependencies, while keeping real-time protection enabled.
