Windows 11 has no single feature called “security containers.” The phrase describes several different boundaries: AppContainer limits what an app can access, Windows Sandbox runs an untrusted Win32 app in a disposable virtualized desktop, and virtualization-based security (VBS) isolates selected protections and secrets. Each can reduce a particular risk, but none guarantees that every file, account, or host resource is safe.
What “security containers” means in Windows 11
These mechanisms operate at different levels and protect different assets. AppContainer is process-level isolation; Windows Sandbox is a temporary virtualized environment; and VBS is a protected platform for selected security functions. They are not interchangeable, and VBS is not a disposable workspace for opening arbitrary files.
| Mechanism | Primary asset or boundary | What it can limit | Important exposure or condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| AppContainer | An application’s access to system resources | Access to files, registry keys, devices, network, processes, and windows, according to permissions and declared capabilities | Access required by the app can be granted; the actual boundary depends on its capabilities and allowed resources. |
| Windows Sandbox | A temporary session for an untrusted Win32 app | Separates the app and its state from the normal desktop in a lightweight virtualized environment | Mapped host folders and integrations can expose host resources; settings determine what crosses the boundary. |
| VBS and memory integrity | Selected security components and kernel-mode code integrity | Uses hardware virtualization and the Windows hypervisor to isolate selected protections | Requires supported hardware and configuration; some drivers or apps may be incompatible. |
| Credential Guard | Selected authentication secrets | Uses VBS to isolate protected credential material and impede some credential-theft techniques | Does not stop every way malware can use credentials, and is not enabled on every Windows 11 device. |
Think of these as boundaries around different things, rather than layers that all do the same job. AppContainer limits an individual process’s permitted access. Sandbox gives a program a temporary desktop whose state is discarded when it closes. VBS uses hardware virtualization to protect selected security functions, such as memory integrity and Credential Guard. A feature’s name alone does not tell you what it protects: the relevant questions are which asset is isolated, what resources are allowed across the boundary, and whether the feature is supported and active on that device.
For the underlying feature descriptions, see Microsoft’s Windows 11 Security Book — Application Isolation, AppContainer isolation, and VBS overview.

What does Windows Sandbox protect?
Windows Sandbox is intended for running untrusted Win32 applications in a lightweight, hardware-virtualized desktop. It uses the same hardware-based virtualization technology as Hyper-V. When the sandbox closes, its software, files, and state are discarded. Microsoft summarizes this behavior as: “When you close Windows Sandbox, it doesn’t save anything on your device.” See Microsoft’s application isolation documentation.
This makes Sandbox useful when you want to inspect or run an application without keeping its changes in the temporary environment. It does not establish that the application or any file is safe, nor does it promise that the host is unreachable in every configuration. The practical protection depends partly on what you share with the sandbox.
In other words, the disposable session protects against leaving the sandbox’s own software, files, and state behind after it closes. It is not a verdict on the file you opened, nor a guarantee that anything you deliberately made accessible to the session is protected from it. Consider the boundary before you start: a clean, minimally integrated sandbox is different from one configured to access host folders or devices.

Configuration determines what crosses the boundary
Windows Sandbox supports configuration through a .wsb file. Settings can map host folders and enable integrations. A mapped folder gives the sandbox access to host files in that location, so sharing a folder containing important data weakens the separation for those files. Microsoft’s Windows Sandbox configuration documentation also warns that exposing host video input may have security implications.
Protected Client mode runs Sandbox within an AppContainer isolation environment. Microsoft notes that this may restrict copying files into or out of the sandbox. That tighter workflow can reduce convenient transfer paths, but it does not turn the environment into a universal guarantee against all threats.
This creates a practical tradeoff: integrations can make a test easier, but every shared folder, device, or transfer path is something to account for. If a task does not need a particular host resource, avoid exposing it just for convenience. Protected Client can also make moving files less convenient, which is a workflow cost to weigh against the additional isolation it provides.

What Sandbox does not tell you about its architecture
Sandbox shares some physical memory pages for operating-system binaries and supports GPU virtualization when compatible hardware and drivers are available. These are architectural and performance design details; by themselves, they are not evidence of a security failure. Microsoft describes them in its Windows Sandbox architecture documentation.

It can reduce the risk of running an untrusted application by placing that session in a disposable virtualized environment. It is not a blanket antivirus guarantee. If you map a host folder, expose devices, or otherwise integrate host resources, those resources are part of the exposure to consider. Closing Sandbox discards the sandbox’s software, files, and state; it does not establish that every host resource or every possible attack path was isolated.
Use Sandbox as one boundary in a cautious workflow, not as permission to open unknown files without considering their source or the resources you share. Keep the configuration minimal for the task, and avoid exposing folders or devices that the test does not need.
What AppContainer limits—and how it differs from Sandbox
AppContainer constrains a process through least-privilege access controls. Microsoft describes controls for files and registry keys, devices, network access, processes, and windows. An app can receive capabilities where needed, so the right description is “limited to its allowed resources,” not “unable to access anything.” Its effective access depends on the app’s declared capabilities and the resources permitted to it. Details are in Microsoft’s AppContainer isolation documentation.
Unlike Windows Sandbox, AppContainer is not a separate disposable desktop for an arbitrary Win32 program. It is a process and resource isolation environment. When evaluating a contained app, consider what capabilities it needs and what resources the system allows it to access; the label alone does not explain the full boundary.
The distinction matters when choosing a tool. Sandbox is the option described for trying an untrusted Win32 application in a temporary virtualized desktop. AppContainer is about the resources a process is permitted to reach. Neither label means “no risk”: a process may have access to resources it needs, and a Sandbox configuration may intentionally make host resources available.

What VBS and memory integrity protect
VBS uses hardware virtualization and the Windows hypervisor to create an isolated environment for selected security solutions. It can restrict access to important operating-system resources or security assets. It is a platform for particular protections rather than a general-purpose container for suspicious files. Microsoft’s VBS documentation explains the architecture.
That makes VBS a different kind of boundary from either AppContainer or Sandbox. It supports protections aimed at security functions and assets, rather than giving the user a disposable place to run an arbitrary app. Having VBS in the picture also does not mean that every Windows process, file, or credential is isolated; the protection depends on which VBS-backed feature is in use and what it is designed to protect.
What does memory integrity do in Windows 11?
Memory integrity runs kernel-mode code integrity inside VBS and restricts certain kernel-memory allocations. Its purpose is to help protect code integrity at the kernel level; it does not mean every component or attack on the computer is blocked. Microsoft documents the feature and its deployment considerations in Enable virtualization-based protection of code integrity.

Some applications and hardware drivers may be incompatible and malfunction when memory integrity is enabled. Microsoft also warns that, rarely, an incompatibility can cause a boot failure. Check compatibility and current Microsoft deployment guidance before changing the setting, especially on a work-managed PC.
The compatibility tradeoff is specific to the software and hardware on the device; the documentation does not provide a universal performance or protection percentage. Treat a driver or app incompatibility as a reason to check current support guidance, not as evidence that the feature is ineffective or that it should always be disabled. On a managed work PC, consult the administrator before changing a security setting.
Check memory integrity status
- Open Windows Security.
- Go to Device security > Core isolation details.
- Check the Memory integrity status. The setting is available on supported devices; its presence or status should not be assumed across all Windows 11 PCs.
What Credential Guard protects—and what it does not
Credential Guard uses VBS to isolate selected authentication secrets, including NTLM- and Kerberos-related material. Microsoft says it can block credential-theft techniques such as Pass-the-Hash and Pass-the-Ticket, and that malware running with administrative privileges cannot extract secrets protected by VBS. That protection is specifically about extracting protected material: Credential Guard does not stop malware from using privileges associated with credentials already available to it. See Microsoft’s Credential Guard overview and explanation of how Credential Guard works.

This distinction between stealing a secret and using an existing session or privilege is important. Credential Guard can make selected secret material harder to extract, but it is not a way to make a compromised PC harmless. Malware may still act with privileges associated with credentials already available to it, and other ways of capturing or using credentials remain outside the feature’s protection.
Credential Guard’s limits
Credential Guard does not protect against every route to account compromise. Microsoft identifies limits that include keyloggers, physical attacks, local and Microsoft accounts, credential software outside Windows feature protection, supplied NTLM credentials, Kerberos service tickets, and certain protocols or credential flows. It also does not protect the Active Directory database on domain controllers.
In a Hyper-V guest, Credential Guard protects against attacks inside that virtual machine, not privileged attacks originating from the host. As with other VBS-backed protections, its scope is defined; it should not be described as a complete defense for every credential or authentication path.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Credential Guard enabled by default in Windows 11?
Not on every Windows 11 PC. Microsoft documents default enablement for qualifying devices running Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, subject to system requirements and whether the feature was explicitly disabled. Edition and prior configuration can affect the result. Secure Boot is recommended; Microsoft also describes TPM and UEFI lock as additional protections. Check the device’s actual configuration rather than inferring status from its Windows version. The requirements and behavior are covered in Microsoft’s Credential Guard overview.
So “Windows 11 includes Credential Guard” and “Credential Guard is protecting this PC now” are not equivalent claims. Version 22H2 or later is part of Microsoft’s documented default-enablement condition for qualifying systems, not a promise that every Windows 11 installation has the feature active. Hardware and system requirements, edition, prior configuration, and whether it was explicitly disabled all matter. Secure Boot is recommended, while TPM and UEFI lock are described as additional protections; check the device itself rather than relying on the version number.

- Testing an untrusted Win32 app: Windows Sandbox is the relevant disposable virtualized desktop. Keep mapped folders and device integrations to the minimum needed.
- Constraining an app’s normal access: AppContainer applies process and resource permissions based on the app’s capabilities.
- Protecting kernel-mode code integrity: Memory integrity uses VBS for that targeted purpose, with compatibility checks required for drivers and apps.
- Reducing theft of selected authentication secrets: Credential Guard isolates supported material, but does not prevent all credential abuse or protect every account and authentication route.
The most useful question is not whether Windows has “a container,” but which asset needs protection, what access crosses the chosen boundary, and whether the feature is supported and active on the specific device.

There is no separate generic “security container” purchase or one switch that provides all of these protections. The relevant choices are built-in Windows mechanisms and configuration decisions. Their cost is chiefly operational: configuring sharing carefully, checking support and status, and accepting that tighter isolation may make file transfers or some apps and drivers less convenient. The Microsoft material reviewed does not establish a universal effectiveness percentage or a single performance cost, so those should not be assumed.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Windows Sandbox protect?
Windows Sandbox runs an untrusted Win32 application in a lightweight virtualized desktop. Closing it discards the sandbox’s software, files, and state. Its protection depends in part on configuration: mapped host folders and enabled integrations can expose host resources.
Does Windows Sandbox protect my PC from viruses?
It can reduce risk by isolating a temporary app session, but it is not a blanket antivirus guarantee and does not make every file safe. Keep host folders, devices, and other integrations to the minimum needed.

Credential Guard uses VBS to isolate selected authentication secrets, including NTLM- and Kerberos-related material, and can block techniques such as Pass-the-Hash and Pass-the-Ticket. It does not stop malware from using privileges associated with credentials already available to it, and it does not cover every account or authentication path.
Is Credential Guard enabled by default in Windows 11?
Not on every PC. Microsoft documents default enablement on qualifying Windows 11 version 22H2-or-later devices, subject to system requirements, edition, prior configuration, and whether it was explicitly disabled. Check the device’s actual configuration.
What does memory integrity do in Windows 11?
Memory integrity runs kernel-mode code integrity inside VBS and restricts certain kernel-memory allocations. Some apps and drivers may be incompatible; Microsoft warns that malfunction can occur and that boot failure is rare. Check compatibility and current guidance before changing it.
The Bottom Line
Windows 11’s security boundaries protect different things: AppContainer limits a process’s allowed access, Sandbox discards a temporary virtualized app session, and VBS-backed features target selected kernel protections or authentication secrets. None is a universal shield. Check what resources cross the boundary, verify that the feature is supported and active, and weigh tighter isolation against compatibility and workflow needs.
