Nothing has been established as OLED’s single replacement. As of October 2026, TV makers are selling OLED alongside Mini LED and newer RGB-backlit LCD sets, while MicroLED remains an early-stage candidate for mainstream devices. The likely near-term future is competition among technologies—not a settled handover.
Is OLED being phased out?
No. Samsung’s 2026 TV lineup includes Micro RGB, OLED, Neo QLED and Mini LED sets. At CES 2026, the company described Micro RGB and OLED as premium-segment technologies while positioning Mini LED as a way to extend premium TV features to more of its lineup. That is evidence of several product paths being pursued at once, not a declaration that OLED is ending.
OLED is also still under development. At IMID 2026, Universal Display Corporation announced OLEDX, an architecture intended to redirect light that would otherwise be trapped inside an OLED device. That is a company-reported technology announcement; it does not establish that OLEDX is already deployed across retail TVs or that a consumer product using it is available.

These labels do not all describe the same kind of display. Mini LED and Micro RGB are LCD technologies that use backlights; OLED makes light at the pixel level. MicroLED is a separate emissive-display approach. That distinction matters more than the similarity between names.

Mini LED: a current LCD alternative
Mini LED is a backlight technology, not an emissive pixel technology. In an LCD TV, the backlight illuminates the panel; local dimming adjusts groups of backlight LEDs to make some screen areas darker than others. The dimming is zonal, and its behavior depends on the model. A zone is not the same as individual pixel-level light control.
LG announced 2026 QNED evo Mini LED models with model-dependent local dimming and gaming features. Samsung’s 2026 lineup also includes Mini LED sets. These announcements establish Mini LED as a current buying option, but they are manufacturer statements, not matched independent tests proving it superior to OLED.

Micro RGB: RGB backlighting, not MicroLED
Micro RGB refers here to an LCD television whose backlight uses separate red, green and blue LEDs. LG’s December 16, 2025 announcement described its Micro RGB evo (MRGB95) as an LCD TV and listed 75-, 86- and 100-inch sizes. Samsung announced a 2026 Micro RGB range spanning 65 to 115 inches. Omdia’s CES 2026 recap likewise describes RGB television backlighting as a shift from blue-only LEDs to separate red, green and blue LEDs.
Despite the name, an RGB-backlit LCD is not MicroLED. The RGB LEDs illuminate an LCD panel; they are not the display’s individual emissive pixels. Product announcements do not by themselves establish regional stock or comparable real-world picture performance, so check the precise model and local availability before treating an announced set as a practical option.

MicroLED: a longer-term possibility
MicroLED is distinct from both Micro RGB backlighting and OLED. The MicroLED Association’s 2026 roadmap describes production as low-capacity, calls the wearable segment early-stage and says mainstream-device use may still be several years away. It also identifies automotive displays as a possible application and notes manufacturing challenges for large displays made by joining panels.
That roadmap is an industry association’s outlook, not a guaranteed schedule. It supports treating MicroLED as a technology to watch, not as a universal TV replacement with a confirmed consumer launch date.

What should you compare before buying a TV?
There is no established overall winner across these technologies in the available evidence. Manufacturer announcements establish that products are being developed or sold; they do not replace controlled comparisons of matched models. For a useful decision, compare actual sets of similar size in the same market and weigh:

- Room and seating: Consider daylight, glare, dark-room viewing and how far off-axis people will sit. Avoid treating a vendor brightness or color figure as a universal result.
- Contrast and dimming: Local dimming is model-specific and zonal; a high zone count does not mean OLED-like pixel-level control.
- Size, price and availability: Compare dated local listings for the exact screen size and model. A technology name alone does not establish affordability, stock or value.
- Your use: Films, sports, gaming, desktop use, static content and the screen size you want can change which trade-offs matter most.
- Independent measurements: Look for comparable testing of peak and sustained brightness, black level and blooming, color accuracy, viewing angle, power use and lifetime.
LG said its 2026 QNED evo rollout would begin in Korea, the United States and European countries, with other markets following during the year; exact availability varies by model and country. For any announced Mini LED or Micro RGB set, verify local release and stock rather than assuming a global launch means it is on sale where you live.
Should you wait for MicroLED or buy a Mini LED TV?
If you need a television now, compare currently available models—including OLED, Mini LED and any Micro RGB set actually sold in your region—against your room, size and budget. Waiting specifically for MicroLED means waiting for a category whose roadmap still describes mainstream-device adoption as several years away, without a guaranteed date. If you are not in a hurry, reassess when a specific MicroLED model is announced with local availability, independent measurements and a price you can compare.
Do not treat QD-OLED or tandem OLED as replacements for OLED: they are developments within the OLED family. Omdia’s CES 2026 recap reports activity in both, while Universal Display Corporation’s OLEDX announcement is another sign of continuing OLED research. None of those announcements, alone, resolves which display will suit a particular buyer best.
