Video platforms will not stand out simply by adding more features. Their advantage will depend on whether viewers can find something worth watching, trust the answers and recommendations they receive, and stay connected to the interests that brought them there. Current surveys point to those priorities, but they do not establish which company will win.
Why feature count is a weak measure of platform strength
A long feature list says little about whether a service solves the viewer’s actual problem. A platform can offer more categories, profiles, recommendations, or interactive tools and still leave people unsure what to watch or where a title is available. The more useful question is whether its features make the experience feel relevant, reliable, and connected.
That matters in a fragmented market. Gracenote’s 2025 State of Play survey covered 3,000 consumers in Brazil, France, Germany, Mexico, the U.K., and the U.S. Nearly 33% of streaming users across those countries said fragmentation negatively affected their TV experience, while 45% said streaming felt overwhelming. Consumers globally spent an average of 14 minutes searching for something to watch; in the U.S., the average was 12 minutes, up from 10.5 minutes in mid-2023. These are survey findings, not measurements of every viewer or platform.

Discovery friction can have consequences beyond an inconvenient evening. In the same survey, 19% said they would abandon a viewing session if search failed, and 49% said they would consider canceling a service because of difficulty finding something to watch. Two-thirds, or 66%, expressed interest in a single guide across services and information about where a specific program is available. Gracenote’s 2025 findings make clear why discovery and availability deserve more attention than raw feature counts.

What should viewers and platform teams look for?
The following framework translates the survey evidence into practical questions. It is an editorial way to compare experiences, not a validated scoring system; the available sources do not provide consistent platform-by-platform measurements.
| Dimension | What to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery and availability | Can viewers find relevant programs across catalogs and see where a title is available? | Search friction and fragmentation can make a service feel overwhelming. |
| Trust and data quality | Are recommendations and answers accurate, current, and clear about availability? | A confident-sounding but outdated answer is not useful if a title cannot be watched where indicated. |
| Continuity across platforms and time | Can a service support a fan between releases and connect social discovery with full-length viewing? | People often discover content on one platform and consume it elsewhere. |
| Community and creator participation | Does the service make room for niche interests, fan activity, and creator work? | These can help programming feel personally relevant rather than interchangeable. |
| Business model and viewing control | Does the mix of subscriptions, free ad-supported viewing, and on-demand choice fit the viewer? | Price and tolerance for ads shape whether an experience feels like a fair exchange. |
Can AI make finding something to watch easier?
Conversational search may help viewers describe what they want in ordinary language, ask follow-up questions, or combine several constraints. But adoption does not automatically mean trust. Nielsen/Gracenote’s April 2026 survey of 4,003 U.S. AI chatbot users ages 13–79 found that 49% of Gen Alpha respondents—ages 13 and 14 in this survey—selected AI chatbots as the best source for TV and movie recommendations, compared with 41% who selected streaming or cable interfaces and guides. The result describes that age subgroup, not all young viewers.
Across the survey respondents, traditional search rated higher than chatbots for trustworthiness (50% versus 27%) and accuracy (46% versus 33%). Chatbots were preferred for complex queries (68% versus 19%), follow-up questions (69% versus 18%), direct answers (54% versus 31%), and comprehensive results (50% versus 30%). Three in four respondents said they verify chatbot responses. The pattern suggests that conversational interfaces can be useful for exploration, while dependable answers remain essential.

For a video service, useful AI discovery therefore depends on the underlying information as much as the interface: whether a title is actually available, whether details are up to date, and whether a recommendation reflects the viewer’s request. As Gracenote SVP of Product Tyler Bell put it, “But adoption alone is not the story: trust is. The winning platforms will be those that can deliver viewing experiences people can actually rely on — grounded in vetted, timely and high-quality data.” The survey announcement gives the U.S. sample and field dates: January 23 to February 4, 2026.
Why fandom extends beyond a platform’s own catalog
For many viewers, following a show, artist, game, or creator is an ongoing activity, not just a session spent watching a full-length program. Deloitte’s 2026 Digital Media Trends study, based on 3,575 U.S. consumers, found that 55% of fans engage with a fandom across multiple platforms; the figure was about 70% among Gen Z and millennial fans. Social media was the primary way to discover new content for 52% of fans overall and 73% of Gen Z fans.
Discovery and viewing often happen in different places: 44% of fans said they generally watch, listen to, or buy the full version elsewhere after discovering a show, music, or game on social media. And 40% wished they could aggregate their favorite fan content in one place. These results point to a relationship gap for video platforms: a service may host the program, while the conversation and discovery that keep people interested happen elsewhere. Deloitte discusses year-round social content, shopping, and exclusive experiences as possible ways to connect with fans beyond release campaigns; that is strategic analysis, not proof that any one tactic increases retention.

Deloitte’s analysis is based on U.S. consumers, with fandom figures drawn from the 2,977 respondents who self-identified as fans where applicable. It supports treating fandom as cross-platform behavior, not assuming that a platform owns the entire fan relationship.

Community features are strategically meaningful only when they serve real interests rather than adding another social layer by default. In Tubi’s March 2026 Stream 2026 report, 65% of respondents said they felt part of a community based on the movies and shows they watch; 74% said they were loyal to services that support their fandoms; and 68% said they felt seen when a platform helped them discover a niche or emerging fandom. These are figures published by Tubi, a platform operator, and should not be treated as a neutral cross-platform benchmark.
Tubi’s report also says 76% of respondents wanted more programming from independent or smaller creators, while 37% wanted platforms to bring existing creator content onto streaming services. Those preferences suggest two different opportunities: commissioning or featuring new creator-led work, and making content that already exists elsewhere easier to access. Whether either approach works for a particular service depends on audience, rights, curation, and execution; the survey does not prove a causal effect on loyalty.

Tubi’s announcement of its Stream 2026 report also reports that 84% agreed watching ads was a fair trade for free content, and 76% would rather watch a free ad-supported service than a paid service that also shows ads. That is evidence of stated preference among the report’s respondents, not a universal rule about what viewers will accept.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How the business model shapes the experience
Subscriptions and ad-supported viewing make different promises. A subscription asks viewers to pay for access, often alongside other services. A free ad-supported model avoids a subscription fee but asks viewers to trade attention for programming. The right fit depends on how much choice viewers get, whether ads feel proportionate, and whether the catalog helps them find something they value.

What the evidence can—and cannot—establish
The evidence supports a set of priorities, not a leaderboard. Gracenote’s surveys identify reported discovery problems and differing attitudes toward search and chatbots; Deloitte describes U.S. fandom behavior; and Tubi reports preferences from its own cultural insights study. These sources do not measure named services on comparable terms for search quality, recommendation accuracy, community tools, creator integration, accessibility, or total cost. Nor do stated preferences establish that a particular feature causes loyalty or revenue.
For broader context, the European Commission’s 2025 European Media Industry Outlook considers audiovisual media, video games, extended reality, and news across EU-27 markets, drawing on quantitative research, secondary sources, and stakeholder exchanges. Its landing page supports placing platform experience within a wider media and competitiveness discussion, but it does not provide detailed numerical findings to support a more specific claim here.
