WhatsApp separates four different ideas: a message being sent, reaching a device, being read, and a person currently being connected. Check marks report message progress; online and last seen report presence. Because privacy settings, connectivity, linked devices, and group-chat rules affect those signals, no single missing or visible indicator proves that someone ignored you, read a message, or blocked you.
The check marks, decoded
WhatsApp displays a clock or one or two check marks beside each message. The symbol describes the latest delivery state known to WhatsApp, not the recipient’s intention.

Linked devices matter because delivery can occur on a companion device rather than the phone the recipient normally carries. That is why two gray checks can appear even when the person is not actively using their phone.

What the Message info screen adds
The check marks are a summary. To see recorded times, open the message’s information screen: select or press and hold the message, then choose Info (the wording and gesture can vary slightly between iPhone and Android). WhatsApp can show delivered, read or seen, and played times when those events are available.

WhatsApp uses “Read or Seen” broadly. It can mean that a recipient read a text or viewed a photograph, video, or audio file. A voice message may be marked read before it is actually played, so a read indication is not always a play confirmation. For voice messages, the separate played time is the relevant evidence when WhatsApp records it.
Why group-chat checks behave differently
In a group, the check marks represent every participant rather than one individual. Two gray checks appear only after everyone in the group has received the message on a phone or linked device. Two blue checks appear only after everyone has read it.
A single member whose phone is disconnected, whose account is inactive, or whose privacy settings prevent a read indication can keep the group from reaching the next visual state. A group therefore may remain at two gray checks even though several people have already read the message. The group indicator is an all-participants threshold, not an average or a count.

Missing blue checks have several possible explanations. WhatsApp lists these causes, and the symbol alone cannot distinguish among them:

- Read receipts are disabled. Either you or the other person may have turned off read receipts. In a one-to-one chat, this setting works both ways, so disabling yours also prevents you from seeing the other person’s read receipts.
- The chat was not opened. Delivery can complete while the recipient has not entered the conversation.
- A connection problem interrupted the exchange. The recipient may have received the message but not yet sent a read indication, or either phone may temporarily lack a reliable connection.
- The account blocked you. Blocking can be consistent with missing receipts, but a gray check by itself is not proof of blocking.
- It is the first message. WhatsApp notes that an initial message does not always generate a read receipt.
- Date or time settings are wrong. Incorrect date or time configuration on either phone can interfere with receipt behavior.
Do not infer that someone ignored you from a gray check alone. Check the privacy setting and the device’s connectivity first, and treat blocking as only one possibility among several.
Read receipts: where to find the setting and what it changes
On current WhatsApp builds, open Settings > Privacy > Read receipts. Turn the option off if you do not want one-to-one contacts to receive read indications from your chats.
One-to-one conversations
The choice is reciprocal. When your read receipts are off, you generally cannot see another person’s read receipts in a one-to-one chat, and that person cannot see yours. This is why two gray checks may remain visible even after both people have opened the conversation.

Group conversations
Turning off read receipts does not disable read receipts in group chats. Group behavior follows the all-participants rule described earlier, although privacy and connectivity can still affect what is recorded.

Voice messages
The setting does not turn off play receipts for voice messages. A voice message can therefore have a recorded played event even when ordinary text read receipts are unavailable.
Status viewers
Read-receipt privacy also affects status viewing. If you disable your own read receipts, your status-view list is hidden from you. A contact who has disabled read receipts likewise does not appear in your list of status viewers.
Online status is presence, not proof of reading
WhatsApp’s official definition is: “If a user is online, they have WhatsApp open on their device and are connected to the Internet. However, this doesn’t mean the user has read your message.” Online is therefore a current presence signal. It says that WhatsApp is open and connected, not that your particular conversation has been viewed.
Someone can be online while your message still has two gray checks. They might be reading another chat, checking settings, viewing a status, or simply leaving WhatsApp open without opening your conversation. Conversely, a blue check can appear after the person is no longer online because the read event happened earlier.

What “last seen” means
Last seen records the last time a person used WhatsApp. It is a historical timestamp, not a continuous activity log and not a read receipt for any specific message.
WhatsApp provides four visibility choices for last seen: Everyone, My contacts, My contacts except…, and Nobody. The online indicator has its own privacy control, allowing people to decide who can see when they are currently online. If you stop sharing your own last seen or online information, you also lose access to those fields for other users.
If another person’s last seen or online field is missing, WhatsApp identifies several explanations: you may have hidden your own information; you may not have chatted with or saved each other; the person may have hidden the field; you may be blocked; or a temporary connection issue may be interfering. The absence of a presence label is therefore ambiguous.
How to adjust presence and status privacy
Hide or limit last seen and online
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Privacy.
- Open Last seen and online.
- Choose the audience for last seen: Everyone, My contacts, My contacts except…, or Nobody.
- Choose the corresponding online-visibility option offered on that screen.
These controls affect what other people can observe and, under WhatsApp’s reciprocal rule, what you can observe about them.

Control who receives a status
- Open Settings > Privacy > Status.
- Choose the standard contact audience, exclude selected contacts, or share only with selected contacts.
- Review the audience before posting, because a privacy change does not retroactively alter a status that was already shared.
Every status you share disappears after 24 hours. Status mentions can extend visibility to the people or groups mentioned. A status posted to a group is visible to all members of that group regardless of the ordinary status-audience setting.

A practical way to read the signals without overinterpreting them
Start with the message state, then separate it from presence. A clock or one gray check tells you about sending and delivery. Two gray checks tell you that a destination device received the message. Blue checks, when enabled and recorded, indicate reading. Only after identifying that state should you look at online or last seen, which describe account presence rather than message activity.
Next, identify the chat type. In a one-to-one chat, read-receipt settings are reciprocal. In a group, the checks wait for every participant. Finally, account for alternative explanations: privacy choices, linked devices, connectivity, blocking, and incorrect device time. This sequence prevents a presence signal from being mistaken for a read confirmation.
