Waze’s strongest distinctions from Google Maps are its community-centered reporting workflow, more specific police-report choices in some countries, HOV and eligible-pass routing, and configurable alerts paired with junction lane guidance. These are differences in emphasis and implementation—not four features Google Maps categorically lacks. Google also supports incident and camera reports, and has announced toll estimates and navigation-detail improvements. Availability varies by location, device, and settings.
How Waze’s community model affects the driving experience
Waze describes itself as a community-powered navigation app: Waze Help says, “The maps and navigation are powered by users.” Drivers contribute live information about traffic and road events, making reporting part of the app’s central workflow.
That does not mean Google Maps lacks community information. Google says Maps uses reports from both Maps and Waze communities, and its route decisions also draw on traffic and incident data. The practical distinction is that Waze puts driver reports and real-time driving alerts more prominently at the center of its experience, rather than owning an exclusive crowdsourcing capability. Waze says an active data connection is needed for current traffic information and complete navigation.
Police reports can have more specific categories in Waze
Both apps support police-related reporting, but Waze’s reporting flow can offer more granular choices, including mobile camera, hidden, and opposite-side sightings. Those options are not available in every country, and the available report types may vary by location. Waze asks drivers to report only incidents they observe in real time.

Google Maps also supports police and camera reports, so the distinction is the detail available in Waze’s workflow—not the presence or absence of reporting. Neither app’s report should be treated as a guarantee that an officer or camera is still at the reported location.
HOV and eligible-pass routing can matter on specific roads
Waze documents routing for high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes and certain subscription toll roads, with options to add eligible toll or HOV passes. When local rules and app support align, this can help drivers get routes that account for lane or pass eligibility.

Support depends on the pass, vehicle settings, location, and in-car platform. Waze’s documented functionality can differ across Android Auto, Android Automotive, and CarPlay, and not every pass or express-lane arrangement is covered. Check the current options in your Waze app and the local HOV and subscription toll-road help page before relying on a route.

Choose which alert categories matter to you
Waze provides settings for alert categories such as cameras, police, crashes, traffic, hazards, closures, and construction. The available alerts vary by location. Waze also limits and prioritizes what it shows along a route, so turning on a category does not guarantee an alert for every event.

Camera information has its own coverage limits: Waze says speed-camera data depends on partner and map-editor reports, so an unreported camera may not appear. See Waze’s average-speed-enforcement alert guidance for details.
Get lane guidance at complicated junctions
Waze can show which lane to take at complicated junctions, helping drivers prepare for a turn or split. This is not described as guidance for every road. Google has also announced navigation-detail and lane-related improvements, so it would be inaccurate to say Maps has no lane guidance at all. The relevant comparison is how each app presents guidance on a particular route and whether that information is available in your region and on your device.

Toll estimates are useful, but not unique to Waze
Waze can show estimated toll costs based on factors including route, date and time, vehicle type, passes, settings, and community information. The estimate is not an official price from the road operator; congestion-priced tolls may not have a calculated price. Google Maps has also announced toll estimates, so this is not a feature to count as exclusive to Waze. For a trip where the exact charge matters, verify it with the toll operator. Which app should you use?
Choose based on the route information you need, not on the claim that one app has capabilities the other can never match.
