The Cambrian explosion was a geologically rapid diversification of animal life near the beginning of the Cambrian Period, about 541 million years ago. Major animal lineages became common in the fossil record, and marine ecosystems gained burrowing, active movement, predation and more complex food webs. It was not the origin of life, nor the first appearance of animals.
Animals were already living in the preceding Ediacaran Period (roughly 635–539 million years ago). Sponges and other soft-bodied organisms occupied the seafloor, while body fossils, trails and burrows show that some animals moved and interacted before Cambrian rocks became rich in recognizable skeletons.
What the “Cambrian explosion” means
“Explosion” is a metaphor for a rapid evolutionary radiation, not an instantaneous event. The Cambrian Period lasted from about 541 to 485 million years ago. During it, most major animal phyla became established or conspicuous in the fossil record, although the diversification was concentrated toward the early part of the period and unfolded over millions of years.

| Timescale | What it emphasizes |
|---|---|
| Early Cambrian radiation | A particularly accelerated burst at the beginning of the period, often discussed as roughly 20–40 million years. |
| The Cambrian Period | The full interval from about 541 to 485 million years ago, during which animal diversity continued to change after the initial burst. |
| First conspicuous fossils | The interval when shells, spines and mineralized skeletons become common enough to dominate the visible fossil record. |
These are overlapping uses of the same term rather than contradictory dates. By the end of the Cambrian, nearly all animal phyla that exist today had been established, but many Cambrian forms later disappeared and modern species did not all appear at once.
Were there animals before the Cambrian?
Yes. The Ediacaran Period, approximately 635–539 million years ago, already contained animals. Fossils from Ediacaran seafloors include sponges and a variety of soft-bodied organisms. Some are preserved as bodies, including Kimberella and Dickinsonia; many others are known mainly from trails, burrows and other traces because soft tissues rarely fossilize.
What Ediacaran fossils show
- Body fossils: Dickinsonia had a quilted, segmented appearance, while Kimberella had a more active, bilaterally organized body. Their exact relationships to living animal groups remain debated.
- Sponges: Sponge-grade animals are among the clearest evidence that animal life predates the Cambrian.
- Trails and burrows: Worm-like animals moved through or beneath sediment near the end of the Ediacaran, leaving evidence of behavior even when their bodies were not preserved.
- Large seafloor organisms: Frond-, ribbon- and quilt-shaped forms show that life was no longer exclusively microscopic by roughly 580 million years ago.
A 2025 account from the Natural History Museum notes that many animal characteristics were already developing in the Late Ediacaran. Its scientist Zekun Wang contrasted the periods by observing that Ediacaran life was no longer microscopic but typically was not able to move along the seafloor in the way many Cambrian animals did. That wording describes a broad ecological trend, not an absolute rule: trace fossils demonstrate that some Ediacaran animals did move.
Why their classification is difficult
Ediacaran organisms often had body plans unlike any living animal. A fossil can be unquestionably biological without fitting neatly into a modern phylum. Poor preservation adds another problem: a missing shell or skeleton can make an animal look unrelated to its descendants. The most defensible conclusion is that animals definitely existed before the Cambrian, while the placement of many individual Ediacaran forms remains uncertain.
Why the fossil record looks so sudden
The apparent abruptness is partly a change in preservation, not a moment when animals suddenly appeared. Soft-bodied animals decay rapidly and are preserved only under unusual conditions. Shells, spines and mineralized skeletons survive transport and burial much more readily, so their first abundant fossils make animal diversity easier to see.

Hard parts increased visibility
During the Cambrian, many animals evolved mineralized or otherwise durable structures. Trilobite exoskeletons, mollusc shells and echinoderm elements created abundant body fossils. Their appearance can mark the first preserved evidence of a lineage rather than its true evolutionary origin.
Trace fossils precede some body fossils
Trilobites, for example, left tracks before their hard exoskeletons became common in the fossil record. Burrows and surface trails therefore extend the record of animal activity beyond the first recognizable body fossil. A rock layer lacking body fossils does not prove that no animals lived there.

Sites such as the Burgess Shale preserve soft anatomy as well as hard parts. These deposits show that Cambrian communities included many forms that ordinary sedimentary rocks would miss. Exceptional preservation does not create extra species; it exposes organisms that are normally absent from the fossil record.
What changed in Cambrian ecosystems?
The Cambrian transition involved ecological reorganization as well as new anatomy. Animals increasingly moved through the seafloor, fed actively and interacted as predators, prey, competitors and scavengers.
Burrowing transformed the seabed
Earlier seafloors were often covered by relatively undisturbed microbial mats. Cambrian burrowers mixed sediment, a process called bioturbation. Mixing could bring oxygen into deeper sediment and create new physical habitats. Once animals occupied several depths below the surface, the seabed became a three-dimensional ecosystem rather than a thin surface layer.

Predation favored defenses and mobility
Active predators created selection for armor, spines, rapid movement and behaviors such as hiding in sediment. Prey responses then encouraged further changes in predators, producing an evolutionary feedback loop. This arms-race interpretation explains why body form and behavior diversified together, but it does not imply that predation alone caused the entire event.
Food webs expanded upward
More abundant plankton and suspended particles supplied energy in the water column. Animals that filtered, hunted or scavenged above the seafloor added new feeding levels. The result was a more partitioned food web with niches based on depth, movement and diet.
Which animals appear in Cambrian rocks?
Cambrian fossils include both ancestors of familiar groups and short-lived evolutionary experiments.
| Group or example | What it represents |
|---|---|
| Trilobites and other arthropods | Jointed animals with durable exoskeletons; trilobites are among the most recognizable Cambrian fossils. |
| Molluscs | Early members of the lineage that includes modern snails, clams and cephalopods such as squid. |
| Echinoderms | Early relatives of starfish and sea urchins, often represented by mineralized plates and elements. |
| Annelid and priapulid worms | Segmented or proboscis-bearing worm lineages documented by body fossils and burrows. |
| Early chordates | Animals on the lineage leading toward vertebrates, including jawless forms. |
| Anomalocaris, Opabinia, Wiwaxia and Kylinxia | Distinctive Cambrian animals that illustrate experimentation in body shape, feeding and locomotion. |
The presence of these groups does not mean every modern branch had already acquired its present anatomy. Cambrian lineages continued to evolve, and some spectacular forms left no living descendants.
What may have caused the Cambrian diversification?
No single trigger has been demonstrated. Current explanations treat environmental, ecological, developmental and preservational factors as interacting influences.

Oxygen and environmental conditions
Increasing oxygen availability is a proposed enabling condition because active animals and larger bodies require substantial energy. Oxygen could also support deeper burrowing and more energetic movement. However, the evidence does not establish one global oxygen threshold that mechanically produced the explosion.
Developmental innovations
Changes in developmental programs can generate new arrangements of limbs, segments, shells and sensory structures. Small genetic changes that alter when or where a structure forms may produce large differences in adult anatomy. Fossils show the resulting diversity, but they cannot by themselves identify a single developmental mutation or pathway as the cause.
Ecological feedback
Predation, burrowing and competition created opportunities and pressures that reinforced one another. A new burrowing behavior could open sediment habitat; animals exploiting that habitat could then become prey, predators or competitors. Such feedback helps explain sustained diversification after the first innovations appeared.
Preservation and sampling
The evolution of hard parts and the formation of exceptional fossil deposits amplified the signal available to paleontologists. Better preservation can make a gradual biological transition look abrupt, especially when older rocks contain mostly soft-bodied organisms.
These mechanisms are not mutually exclusive. The most cautious interpretation is that changing environments enabled new lifestyles, ecological interactions accelerated selection, developmental systems generated varied forms, and improved preservation made the resulting diversity visible.

How to interpret “first appearance” claims
A fossil statement can refer to several different events, and they should not be treated as synonyms.
- Evolutionary origin: the lineage split from its relatives, usually inferred from fossils and molecular-clock analyses.
- First trace fossil: the earliest known track, burrow or feeding mark made by an animal.
- First body fossil: the earliest preserved remains recognizable as that animal or lineage.
- First abundant occurrence: the point when fossils become common enough to dominate samples.
Each date depends on rock availability, geographic sampling and preservation. Molecular-clock estimates can place a lineage’s origin earlier than its oldest body fossil, while trace fossils can indicate activity before recognizable skeletons appear.
Ediacaran and Cambrian compared
| Feature | Ediacaran | Cambrian |
|---|---|---|
| Approximate dates | 635–539 million years ago | 541–485 million years ago |
| Animal evidence | Sponges, soft-bodied organisms, body fossils, trails and burrows | Abundant body fossils, trace fossils and mineralized structures |
| Typical preservation | Mostly soft bodies and impressions; uncommon exceptional preservation | Hard parts become widespread; exceptional deposits preserve soft anatomy |
| Ecology | Many seafloor organisms; movement and interactions are present but less pervasive | More burrowing, active feeding, predation and vertically layered habitats |
| Evolutionary interpretation | Animal lineages and traits were already developing, but relationships are often uncertain | Major phyla become established or conspicuous; many experimental forms later vanish |
Did life suddenly appear in the Cambrian?
No. Life is billions of years older than the Cambrian, and animal life is documented in the Ediacaran. What changed was the rate and visibility of animal diversification. A relatively short geological interval produced many new body plans and ecological roles, while new hard parts and exceptional preservation placed more of that history in the fossil record.
The best one-sentence answer is therefore: the Cambrian explosion was a rapid, highly visible diversification of animal forms and ecosystems, built on animal lineages and behaviors that had already begun evolving before the Cambrian.
