The black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes) is a medium-sized carnivorous mustelid and the only ferret species native to the Americas. It depends on prairie dogs for both food and shelter: ferrets hunt prairie dogs and occupy their burrows.

U.S. officials presumed the species extinct across its range near the end of the 1950s after cropland expansion and intensive prairie-dog eradication destroyed much of that system. A small South Dakota population found in 1964 disappeared by 1974, and the last known captive ferret died in 1979. Then, on September 26, 1981, a ranch dog named Shep led people to a surviving colony near Meeteetse, Wyoming. That rediscovery triggered the captive-breeding and reintroduction program that still shapes black-footed-ferret conservation.

What the black-footed ferret was

The black-footed ferret is a member of the weasel family (Mustelidae). Its scientific name is Mustela nigripes, and it is the only ferret species native to North America. The animal’s survival strategy is unusually specialized. Rather than simply living on open grassland, it is tied to prairie-dog colonies, where it finds nearly every basic requirement: prey, underground shelter and a connected landscape of burrows.

Prairie dogs are the ferret’s principal prey. Ferrets also use the same burrow systems for denning and protection. That means a prairie-dog colony is simultaneously a food supply and the ferret’s physical habitat. When prairie dogs disappear, ferrets lose both resources at once. This ecological dependence is the key to understanding why changes that seemed aimed at prairie dogs produced a collapse in ferrets.

What “presumed extinct” means in this history

“Presumed extinct” does not describe one single date or observation. It describes a sequence in which no known animals could be found across the species’ broad historic range, followed by the discovery of isolated survivors and then the loss of those known groups. The major dates are distinct:

Date Event What it establishes
Near the end of the 1950s U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service accounts say the ferret was presumed extinct throughout its range after agricultural expansion and prairie-dog eradication. A range-wide presumption based on the absence of known populations, not proof that every individual had died.
1964 A small population was discovered in Mellette County, South Dakota. The species was not globally extinct; a remnant wild group still existed.
1974 The South Dakota population died out. The known wild population from that discovery was gone.
1979 The last black-footed ferret then known to be in captivity died. At that point, the species again appeared to have no surviving animals known to people.
September 26, 1981 A ferret was found on a Wyoming prairie near Meeteetse, leading biologists to a colony. A surviving wild colony was rediscovered.
1985–1987 Remaining wild ferrets from the Meeteetse colony were captured for a breeding program after disease concerns and declining numbers. Conservation shifted from protecting one wild colony to managing a carefully controlled captive population.

Thus, the species was “presumed extinct” in the late 1950s in a range-wide sense, but the 1964 South Dakota discovery showed that presumption was premature. The 1979 captive death marks the disappearance of the last known captive animal, while the 1981 discovery marks a separate, later rediscovery of wild ferrets.

Why black-footed ferrets declined

The decline had several interacting causes rather than one isolated trigger. Federal wildlife histories and the 2015 Federal Register proposed rule describe a combination of grassland conversion, deliberate prairie-dog control and disease.

Native prairie was converted to cropland

Large areas of native grassland, particularly in the eastern portion of the historic range, were plowed for agriculture. Conversion removed the intact prairie landscape in which prairie-dog colonies could expand and connect. For ferrets, the result was indirect but severe: less prairie meant fewer places for prairie dogs, which meant fewer burrows and less prey.

Prairie dogs were eradicated or poisoned

Prairie dogs were often treated as competitors with livestock for forage. Land managers and producers used poisoning and other eradication measures to reduce colonies. Even where the surrounding grassland remained, removing prairie dogs dismantled the underground burrow network and food base on which ferrets depended.

Sylvatic plague affected both species

Sylvatic plague is a serious disease of prairie-dog colonies and black-footed ferrets. The Federal Register account describes the disease as having been introduced into North America in the 1930s. It can kill prairie dogs, reducing the ferret’s food and burrow habitat, and it can also kill ferrets directly. Disease therefore amplified the damage caused by habitat conversion and eradication.

Losses reinforced one another

These pressures formed a feedback loop. Cropland reduced available prairie; poisoning removed prairie-dog colonies from the remaining grassland; and plague could spread through or eliminate colonies that survived. A ferret population already dependent on a patchy network of colonies then faced fewer places to feed, den and reproduce. The combined effect was much greater than any one pressure considered alone.

What the historical numbers do—and do not—show

Two figures often appear in accounts of the decline, but neither should be mistaken for a modern census.

Figure Definition and date How to interpret it
About 100 million acres historically to 1.4 million acres in the 1960s U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recovery-plan figures, cited in the 2015 Federal Register proposed rule, for prairie-dog occupied habitat. A measure of prairie-dog habitat contraction, not a direct count of ferrets.
500,000 to 1,000,000 ferrets historically An estimate by Anderson and colleagues (1986), cited by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in the 2015 proposed rule. A historical population estimate, not a complete census or a current total.

The acreage comparison illustrates the scale of the prairie-dog habitat collapse. The ferret estimate provides context for how abundant the species may once have been, but its range, methods and historical uncertainty mean it should not be compared directly with later agency counts or recovery targets.

The 1964 South Dakota discovery and its loss

In 1964, biologists found a small black-footed-ferret population in Mellette County, South Dakota. The discovery challenged the range-wide extinction presumption, but it did not reverse the underlying threats. The group was small, isolated and dependent on prairie-dog colonies that were themselves under pressure.

A captive-breeding effort based on the South Dakota animals was unsuccessful. The wild population died out in 1974. Five years later, in 1979, the last ferret then known to be in captivity also died. To scientists and wildlife managers at the time, the species again appeared to have vanished.

How a ranch dog revealed the Meeteetse colony

The decisive rediscovery occurred on September 26, 1981, near Meeteetse, Wyoming. A ranch dog named Shep brought home an unfamiliar animal. His owners, John and Lucille Hogg, took it to a taxidermist, where it was identified as a black-footed ferret. The identification gave biologists a specific place to search rather than a species known only from old records.

Researchers examined nearby prairie-dog colonies and found a living ferret colony. The discovery demonstrated that some animals had survived years after the species was presumed extinct and after the South Dakota group had disappeared. It also showed why prairie-dog colonies were essential monitoring sites: finding active colonies could reveal ferrets that were otherwise difficult to detect.

Why the rediscovered animals were brought into human care

The Meeteetse colony did not provide a secure long-term refuge. Sylvatic plague was found in the colony, and the number of ferrets declined amid disease concerns. Managers faced a choice between leaving a shrinking, vulnerable group in place or removing animals to establish a controlled breeding population.

From 1985 through 1987, all remaining wild ferrets from the colony were taken into human care. The last wild ferret was captured in 1987. Smithsonian’s account identifies 18 founding animals: seven males and 11 females. Those animals became the genetic foundation of the captive-breeding program.

Captive management was not a declaration that the species had become domesticated. It was an emergency conservation measure intended to prevent another disappearance while biologists developed ways to breed ferrets, manage disease risk and return animals to suitable prairie-dog habitat.

How captive breeding and reintroduction changed the recovery strategy

The Meeteetse animals allowed conservationists to maintain a living population when no safe, self-sustaining wild colony remained. Breeding programs could track parentage, avoid pairing close relatives where possible and produce animals for carefully selected release sites. Reintroduction, however, could succeed only where prairie-dog colonies and disease-management measures were available.

That is why black-footed-ferret recovery is not simply a matter of breeding more animals. A release site must provide sufficient prairie-dog prey and burrows, enough connected habitat for ferrets to establish territories, and a strategy for dealing with plague. Ongoing conservation work combines breeding, releases and habitat management rather than treating any one activity as a complete solution.

Historical recovery criteria are not current population counts

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s 2015 proposed rule set policy thresholds for changing the species’ legal status. These numbers describe recovery criteria, not the number of ferrets alive today.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Proposed status milestone Historical criterion in the 2015 proposal What the criterion measures
Downlisting At least 1,500 free-ranging breeding adults across 10 or more populations in at least six states within the historic range. A distribution and abundance threshold for moving from the most imperiled listing category to a less imperiled one.
Delisting At least 3,000 free-ranging breeding adults across at least 30 populations in at least nine historic-range states. A larger, more geographically distributed threshold intended to reduce extinction risk.

Because these criteria came from a 2015 policy document, they should not be presented as a current total or as proof that either milestone has been reached. Population figures also vary by year, by whether they count breeding adults or all animals, and by whether they refer to wild, captive or reintroduced ferrets.

What threats remain

Smithsonian conservation materials identify habitat loss, prairie-dog decline and disease as continuing threats. Breeding and reintroduction work therefore remains necessary even after the species was rediscovered. A colony can be lost if plague removes its prairie dogs, if grassland is converted, or if management eliminates the burrows ferrets need.

Current figures should always be read with their reference dates and definitions. Conservation pages may publish one number for captive animals, another for free-ranging animals and another for released animals, sometimes from different years. Combining them into a single “current population” without checking those labels can produce a misleading result.

Why this extinction story matters

The black-footed ferret demonstrates how an apparently common landscape species can become rare when its ecological partner is removed. Prairie-dog eradication did not merely take away a prey item; it eliminated the burrow system that made the prairie usable to ferrets. Habitat conversion and plague then compounded the damage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It also shows why “extinct” is sometimes a cautious scientific conclusion rather than an observed final death. The late-1950s presumption reflected the absence of known ferrets across their range. The South Dakota discovery in 1964 and the Wyoming rediscovery in 1981 each revised what scientists knew, while the losses in 1974 and 1979 showed how quickly a tiny remnant could disappear.

Finally, the species’ history explains why recovery requires more than finding an individual animal. Long-term survival depends on prairie-dog colonies, intact grasslands, disease management, genetically managed breeding and enough geographically separated populations to withstand local disasters. The dog Shep’s discovery saved the species from being known only as an extinct animal, but maintaining that second chance requires protecting the entire prairie system on which the ferret depends.
