VSCodium is a community-built distribution of Microsoft’s Visual Studio Code source, not a separate editor architecture. It keeps the familiar editor, workspaces, language tooling, debugging model, and configuration approach, while changing product-level components such as branding, the extension gallery connection, and telemetry defaults.

Those changes matter in three practical ways: the editor’s own telemetry is disabled in VSCodium builds according to the project, extensions still can collect data independently, and extension availability depends on Open VSX rather than Microsoft’s Visual Studio Marketplace. Licensing also differs between the MIT-licensed source code and Microsoft’s downloadable product. The right choice therefore depends less on keyboard shortcuts and more on your required extensions, privacy expectations, and dependence on Microsoft-specific integrations.

What VSCodium is

VSCodium is produced from the same upstream source repository used to develop Visual Studio Code. Microsoft describes that repository as Code – OSS, with source available under the MIT license. VSCodium takes that source, applies a product configuration, builds the application, and publishes binaries under the VSCodium project’s stated license.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The project describes its process this way:

“We clone the vscode repository, we lay down a customized product.json that has Microsoft specific functionality (telemetry, gallery, logo, etc.), and then produce a build that we release under our license.”

  • APPS FLY WITH APPLE SILICON — All your favorites, including Microsoft 365 and Adobe Creative Cloud, run lightning fast in macOS.*

That description is important because it explains both the similarity and the differences. The editor codebase is closely related to VS Code, but the product configuration determines which services, logos, identifiers, and default endpoints are included in the distributed application. VSCodium is therefore a distribution choice, comparable to choosing a different build of the same upstream project, rather than an entirely independent editor.

VSCodium’s build process also downloads some prebuilt extensions and Electron components. You should not assume that every file in a VSCodium installation was authored by the VSCodium maintainers or that every component automatically carries the editor’s license.

What VSCodium changes

The most visible differences are product-level substitutions rather than a different editing model. The following table summarizes the practical distinction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Area Microsoft Visual Studio Code distribution VSCodium distribution Developer impact
Upstream code Built from the Code – OSS repository with Microsoft additions and configuration. Built from the same upstream repository with VSCodium product configuration. Core editor behavior is broadly familiar, but service integrations can differ.
Branding Microsoft and Visual Studio Code names, logos, and proprietary assets. VSCodium branding and replacement product assets. Scripts, policies, screenshots, and support instructions that expect official branding may need adjustment.
Telemetry defaults Telemetry controls are configurable, including an off setting. The project says telemetry is disabled in its binaries by default. VSCodium changes the editor’s default behavior; it does not disable data collection by extensions or operating-system services.
Extension registry Microsoft’s Visual Studio Marketplace. Open VSX by default. A required extension may be missing, delayed, incompatible, or subject to different licensing terms.
Product license Microsoft’s downloadable product is covered by a Microsoft product license. VSCodium says its binaries are MIT-licensed. The editor distribution’s rights differ, while extensions and bundled components retain their own licenses.
Microsoft-specific services Official integrations and extensions are delivered for Microsoft’s product family. Some integrations may be unavailable or unsupported in the VSCodium build. Teams that depend on Microsoft-only workflows should validate them before switching.

Telemetry: what is disabled, and what is not

Microsoft’s documentation says, “Visual Studio Code collects telemetry data, which is used to help understand how to improve the product.” It identifies crash reports, error telemetry, and usage data as telemetry categories. The telemetry.telemetryLevel user setting controls VS Code’s own telemetry, and Microsoft documents an off value.

Setting that value to off silences VS Code telemetry events going forward, although Microsoft notes that data may have been sent before the setting was changed. This is a control for the editor’s events, not a universal network switch.

VSCodium’s project states that its binaries disable telemetry. Read that statement narrowly: it concerns telemetry configured into the VSCodium distribution. It does not establish that the application makes no network requests, nor does it govern software installed alongside the editor.

Extension telemetry is separate

Extensions run code in the editor’s extension host and can implement their own analytics, crash reporting, update checks, or service connections. Microsoft explicitly says that telemetry.telemetryLevel does not control telemetry collected by extensions. An extension can therefore send data even when the editor’s own telemetry is disabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before installing a privacy-sensitive extension, read its publisher documentation and privacy notice. Check whether it contacts a cloud service, what identifiers it sends, whether data leaves your organization, and whether the feature can be disabled independently. The same review applies to language servers, command-line tools, synchronization services, and operating-system components that your development workflow launches.

How to verify your intended setting

  1. Open the Command Palette and choose Preferences: Open User Settings (JSON).
  2. Inspect the telemetry.telemetryLevel value. In official VS Code, set it to off if you want to disable the editor’s own future telemetry events.
  3. In VSCodium, treat the project’s disabled-telemetry default as a distribution property, but still inspect extensions and external tools individually.
  4. For managed computers, check organization policies, firewall logs, proxy settings, and endpoint-monitoring rules. Those controls operate outside the editor’s product configuration.

Extensions and the Open VSX trade-off

VSCodium uses Open VSX as its extension registry. Official VS Code uses Microsoft’s Visual Studio Marketplace. This is usually the most consequential day-to-day difference because an editor is only as useful as the language support, debuggers, formatters, linters, test adapters, and source-control tools available for it.

Microsoft’s Marketplace terms restrict Marketplace offerings to the Visual Studio product family and services. The VSCodium project notes that some Marketplace extensions are restricted to official VS Code builds. Microsoft’s FAQ also says that Microsoft extensions published to and acquired from the Visual Studio Marketplace are not licensed for use outside the Visual Studio family of products. Extension authors choose their own licenses, and some extensions are proprietary.

What may happen to a required extension

  • Available in Open VSX: You can install it through VSCodium, although the publisher, release timing, settings, or bundled dependencies may differ.
  • Available under a different publisher: Verify that it is the same project, inspect signing and release information, and confirm the license before using it in a company environment.
  • Not listed: The extension may be unpublished, delayed, incompatible with VSCodium’s product identifier, or intentionally limited to official builds.
  • Installs but fails: It may call an official Marketplace endpoint, check the product identifier, rely on a Microsoft service, or include native dependencies that were packaged only for the official distribution.
  • Proprietary licensing: A technically compatible extension may still not be licensed for your chosen distribution or organizational use.

Do not infer compatibility from an extension’s name alone. Search Open VSX, inspect the publisher and version, read the extension’s license, and test the features you actually use. Availability changes over time, so record the exact extension identifier and version in a project setup guide or lockfile where possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Private and internal extensions

Organizations that publish internal extensions can host them separately or distribute packaged extension files through an approved channel. That can reduce dependence on either public registry, but it shifts responsibility for signing, updates, vulnerability review, and license compliance to the organization. Confirm that your internal deployment process supports the VSCodium product identifier and does not assume the official Marketplace service.

Licensing and branding are different questions

Three layers should be kept separate:

  1. Upstream source: Microsoft identifies the Code – OSS repository as MIT-licensed source code.
  2. Official VS Code product: Microsoft’s downloadable distribution adds Microsoft-specific customizations, proprietary assets, and features and is released under a Microsoft product license.
  3. VSCodium binaries: The VSCodium project states that its binaries are MIT-licensed.

That does not mean every extension, Electron component, prebuilt dependency, icon, or language server is MIT-licensed. Components can carry separate copyright notices and terms. If you redistribute a customized image, include the notices required by each component and review whether your organization’s use satisfies the extension’s license.

Branding also has operational consequences. Documentation that tells users to click a Visual Studio Code logo, scripts that check an official product identifier, and enterprise policies written for Microsoft’s distribution may not map directly to VSCodium. Update onboarding documents and automation rather than assuming that a binary with similar menus has identical identifiers or service endpoints.

Is VSCodium the same as VS Code?

It is similar in core editing experience because both come from the same upstream project, but it is not the same product distribution. Files, settings, keybindings, workspace layouts, tasks, launch configurations, and many extensions can be portable. Product identity, default services, extension registry, branding, and licensing are not guaranteed to be identical.

Portability is strongest for plain editor configuration. It is weaker for settings that name a Microsoft service, extensions distributed only through the official Marketplace, authentication integrations, synchronized profiles, and scripts that inspect application paths or product identifiers. Treat a migration as a compatibility project, not as a simple application swap.

How to decide which distribution fits your workflow

Your priority Questions to answer Likely implication
Minimize editor telemetry by default Do you want a build whose project states that its own telemetry is disabled? VSCodium may fit, while still requiring an extension-by-extension privacy review.
Microsoft Marketplace coverage Are any required extensions published only there or licensed only for official products? Official VS Code may be the practical choice unless an approved alternative exists.
Microsoft-specific integrations Do your debugger, authentication flow, source-control service, or enterprise policy depend on Microsoft’s product family? Validate those integrations first; the official distribution is more likely to be supported.
Open-source distribution licensing Do you need the distribution’s stated MIT licensing for internal redistribution or policy reasons? VSCodium’s stated binary license may align better, subject to component-level review.
Reproducible team setup Can every team member obtain the same extension versions and settings from approved sources? Choose the distribution and registry that your provisioning process can reliably mirror.

No option is universally better. A developer who needs a particular proprietary extension may reasonably choose official VS Code and disable its editor telemetry. Another developer may prefer VSCodium’s defaults and accept the work of checking extension availability. The decision should be made from a tested list of required capabilities, not from the editor name alone.

Migration checklist: moving from VS Code to VSCodium

  1. Inventory dependencies. Export your installed extension list, note versions, and identify which tools are essential for compiling, testing, debugging, formatting, and deployment.
  2. Classify each extension. For every item, check Open VSX availability, publisher identity, compatibility notes, license, update cadence, and any dependency on Microsoft services.
  3. Back up configuration. Copy user settings, keybindings, snippets, tasks, launch configurations, workspace files, and dev-container or remote-development definitions. Keep the original files unchanged until the migration is proven.
  4. Install VSCodium alongside the existing editor. Do not remove the working installation first. Parallel installation lets you compare projects and recover quickly if a debugger or extension is unavailable.
  5. Recreate extensions from approved sources. Install only the versions your organization permits. Avoid copying an extension directory blindly because native modules and product-specific metadata may not transfer cleanly.
  6. Open a representative project. Test language features, formatter behavior, linting, test discovery, debugging, terminal profiles, Git operations, remote connections, and container workflows.
  7. Check authentication and settings sync. Any sign-in flow tied to Microsoft’s official product may require a different setup or may not be supported in VSCodium.
  8. Review network behavior. Confirm that proxy settings, certificate stores, firewall rules, and extension endpoints match your organization’s policy.
  9. Document the result. Record the exact VSCodium release, extension identifiers and versions, required settings, and known limitations so another developer can reproduce the setup.
  10. Remove the old distribution only after sign-off. Keep a rollback path until all projects and team workflows pass their normal checks.

Common problems and how to troubleshoot them

An extension cannot be found

Search Open VSX using the exact identifier and publisher name. If it is absent, check whether the publisher distributes a compatible package through another approved channel. Do not download an arbitrary copy from an untrusted site. If the extension is Microsoft-published or restricted to official builds, review its license and choose between an approved alternative and the official distribution.

The extension installs but a feature is missing

Open the extension’s output or developer log and look for product checks, failed service requests, missing native modules, or authentication errors. Compare the extension’s documented requirements with your VSCodium version. A similar name does not guarantee identical code or permissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Settings or profiles do not appear

Verify that you copied the correct user-data directory and that the configuration does not reference an official product path. Product-specific synchronization may not carry settings between distributions. Import settings manually, then confirm each extension’s configuration namespace.

Debugging or remote development fails

Check the extension version, runtime dependencies, executable paths, and server components. Remote tools can make their own network requests and may require certificates or credentials independent of editor telemetry. Reproduce the problem in a minimal workspace before changing multiple variables.

A corporate policy blocks the installation

Ask the administrator whether the policy allows the VSCodium binary, its update channel, Open VSX, and any required extension endpoints. Security approval should cover the complete software bill of materials, not just the editor executable.

Does disabling telemetry make VSCodium completely offline?

No. Disabling the editor’s telemetry means that the distribution is configured not to send those editor telemetry events. It does not guarantee zero network activity. Extension updates, language services, authentication, source-control providers, crash handlers, package managers, remote-development components, and operating-system services can all connect to networks. If your requirement is a fully offline environment, enforce it with network controls and an offline software supply chain, then test every required feature without external access.

Security and maintenance considerations

Choosing VSCodium changes more than a privacy setting. You are also choosing a build pipeline, update channel, extension registry, and support model. Keep the distribution current, verify release provenance according to your organization’s policy, and monitor security advisories for the editor, Electron runtime, extensions, and language tooling separately.

For teams, standardize a small approved extension set, pin versions when reproducibility matters, and review new extensions before they enter shared development images. A registry change can alter publisher metadata, release timing, and license terms even when the extension’s name remains familiar.

Bottom line for developers

VSCodium removes or replaces Microsoft-specific product configuration from a VS Code-based build: branding, gallery integration, and telemetry defaults are the clearest examples. The editor remains recognizably VS Code-like, but the surrounding ecosystem is different. VSCodium’s project states that its binaries disable telemetry and use Open VSX; Microsoft’s distribution uses the Visual Studio Marketplace and carries Microsoft’s product license. Extension telemetry remains independent, and component licenses remain separate.

Choose VSCodium when its defaults and distribution model match your privacy, licensing, and workflow requirements. Choose official VS Code when Marketplace coverage, Microsoft-specific extensions, or supported integrations are essential. In either case, validate the exact extensions and services your projects require before making the switch.
