Voice assistants do not normally keep every sound their microphones hear forever. A device listens for a wake word or activation gesture, sends the resulting request for processing, and may retain the audio, a transcript, typed text, and account metadata under separate rules. The retention period depends on the assistant, your settings, your account activity, and sometimes your country.

Amazon, Google and Apple all provide deletion or history controls, but their defaults are different. Audio can be deleted while a transcript remains, or audio can be off by default while text activity is still saved. The practical answer is therefore not simply “yes” or “no”: identify which data exists, where it is stored, and which control removes it.

Does a smart speaker record everything?

A smart speaker’s microphone is designed to listen continuously for an activation signal, but that is different from continuously uploading and storing room audio. Amazon says an Echo indicates when it detects its wake word and is recording audio to stream to the cloud. The indicator tells you that an interaction has started; it does not tell you how long the resulting data will remain in your account. Amazon’s device privacy guidance also explains that a false wake can create a recording that you can review and delete.

Activation and retention are separate decisions

Wake-word detection, request processing and history storage are separate stages:

#1 Best Overall
Amazon Echo Dot (newest model) - Vibrant sounding speaker, Designed for Alexa+, Great for bedrooms, dining rooms and offices, Charcoal
  • Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
  • Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
  • Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
  • Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
  1. Detection: the device or companion phone looks for a wake word, button press or other activation.
  2. Capture: the assistant records the request and may include a short amount of audio around the activation.
  3. Processing: speech recognition converts audio into a command or transcript so the service can respond.
  4. Storage: the provider may retain the audio, transcript, typed request or related account information according to your settings.

A request can therefore be processed successfully without its audio being kept for the long term. Conversely, turning off audio storage does not necessarily remove text history already associated with the interaction.

What information can be kept?

Privacy settings often use the word “recording,” while the account history contains several different data types. Check each category separately:

Data type What it represents Why it matters
Audio recording The captured sound file sent for speech processing It can contain your voice and background sounds, including an unintended false activation.
Transcript Text generated from spoken audio A transcript can remain after the audio is deleted and may reveal the substance of a request.
Typed request Text entered instead of spoken Some services apply the same chat-history retention rules to typed and spoken requests.
Interaction metadata Time, device, account, service or feature information associated with a request Metadata can be governed by a different setting from audio deletion.
Device-stored history Recent requests cached on a phone, speaker or other local device Deleting cloud history does not automatically prove that every local copy is gone.

When a policy says that audio is not saved, read whether it is discussing provider servers, your account activity, or a local history list. Those are not interchangeable.

How Amazon Alexa handles recordings

Amazon’s UK support documentation describes both automatic-deletion choices and a “Don’t save” option. The controls are available through Alexa Privacy or Voice History, where you can review and delete interactions associated with your account, including recordings caused by a false wake. The exact menu wording can vary by device and software version. Amazon’s automatic-deletion help and its device privacy guidance are UK pages, so readers elsewhere should check the options shown in their own account.

Automatic deletion choices

On the cited UK page, you can select automatic deletion after 3 months or 18 months. Amazon says the selected period applies to voice recordings, transcripts and typed requests associated with a chat, measured from the last request in that chat. A conversation that receives a new request can therefore have its retention clock measured from that later interaction.

“Don’t save recordings” is not “save nothing”

With “Don’t save recordings,” Amazon says recordings are deleted after processing and previously saved recordings are deleted. The same UK device guidance says transcripts and typed requests remain for 30 days after the last interaction in a chat before automatic deletion. This is why deleting audio does not necessarily remove the text that represents the request.

Review or delete Alexa history

  1. Open the Alexa app or the Alexa Privacy page for your account.
  2. Open Voice History and review the listed interactions, including any that may have resulted from a false wake.
  3. Delete individual entries or use the available automatic-deletion setting.
  4. Check the setting again after an app or device software update, because menu names and available choices can change.

These retention periods are documented for Amazon UK. Do not assume that the same choices, timing or legal terms apply to every country, device edition or account.

How Google Assistant handles recordings and activity

Google’s Assistant guidance makes a clear distinction between audio and text. Google Assistant Help states: “By default, your audio recordings are not saved on Google servers.” You can opt in to save audio through the relevant activity setting. Google Assistant Help explains the setting and its relationship to Assistant activity.

Text can still be saved

When Web & App Activity is enabled, Google says the text of Assistant interactions and related information from linked devices and services may be saved in your Google Account. Consequently, an audio recording may not exist on Google’s servers while a written account of the request does. The consulted Google pages do not state one universal automatic-deletion duration for Assistant interaction text; the period shown to you can depend on current account controls.

Find and delete Google Assistant activity

  1. Open your Google Account’s My Activity page.
  2. Use the activity filters to locate Assistant interactions and inspect the associated entries.
  3. Delete individual items or use the Assistant activity controls offered for your account.
  4. Review Web & App Activity and audio-saving choices separately; changing one does not automatically change the other.

If several people use a shared speaker, check every signed-in account and linked service. A device can be physically shared while histories remain associated with individual accounts.

How Apple Siri handles recordings

Apple says Siri audio is not stored by Apple unless you opt in to Improve Siri and Dictation. Some Siri processing occurs on the device, depending on the feature and device. Apple also says Siri request history and related information may be associated with a random, device-generated identifier rather than directly with your Apple Account. Read Apple’s Ask Siri & Privacy notice for the default handling and its Improve Siri and Dictation notice for the opt-in program.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What changes when improvement sharing is enabled?

For users who opt in, Apple says request history—including audio, transcripts and related data—may be retained for up to two years. A small subset selected for human review may be kept beyond two years for ongoing improvement. This longer possibility applies to the improvement program, not to Apple’s default audio handling.

Deleting Siri requests has limits

Apple’s privacy features page says you can delete Siri and Dictation requests associated with the identifier. However, requests more than six months old and reviewed samples may no longer be associated with that identifier, so they may not be removable through that identifier-linked deletion process. Device-stored Siri history has its own deletion control. Apple’s privacy features documentation describes these distinctions.

  1. Open the Siri and Dictation settings on each Apple device you use.
  2. Turn off Improve Siri and Dictation if you do not want to participate in the improvement program.
  3. Use the Siri & Dictation history deletion control to remove available identifier-linked requests.
  4. Clear device-stored Siri history separately where that control is provided.

Retention and deletion compared

The following table compares the official pages cited above. It is a comparison of those documented controls, not an audit of every country, device or account configuration.

Assistant Audio default Other information Stated duration Main history route
Alexa (Amazon UK guidance) “Don’t save recordings” deletes recordings after processing; saved recordings can be deleted. Transcripts and typed requests can remain; a selected automatic-deletion period applies to recordings and related chat data. 3 or 18 months for the selected option; with “Don’t save,” text remains 30 days after the last interaction. Alexa Privacy or Voice History.
Google Assistant Audio is not saved on Google servers by default; saving audio is optional. Assistant text and related information may be stored when Web & App Activity is on. No single universal text-history duration is stated in the cited pages. My Activity and Assistant activity controls.
Siri Apple says audio is not stored unless Improve Siri and Dictation is enabled. Request history, transcripts and related data can be linked to a random device-generated identifier. Up to two years for opted-in improvement data; a small reviewed subset may persist longer. Siri & Dictation History and Improve Siri and Dictation controls.

How to reduce what is retained

Use this checklist whenever you set up a new assistant or change phones:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Identify the account: confirm which account is signed in to the speaker, phone or tablet.
  • Separate audio from text: look for independent switches for recordings, activity, transcripts and typed requests.
  • Choose the shortest automatic period available: where a service offers timed deletion, select the period that matches your privacy needs.
  • Delete existing history: use the provider’s history page rather than assuming that changing a future-retention setting erases older entries.
  • Check local history: clear device-stored requests separately from cloud or account history.
  • Review improvement programs: opt-in programs can apply different retention and review rules from the default service.
  • Repeat after updates: account controls and labels can change with software versions or regional policy changes.

What deletion does—and does not—prove

A deletion button usually describes a particular history store. It may not cover every copy created during processing, a transcript kept under another activity setting, a device cache, or samples already separated from an account identifier for quality review. Apple explicitly documents limits for older and reviewed Siri samples, while Amazon and Google expose different audio and text controls.

  • KEEP YOUR HOME COMFORTABLE - Control compatible smart home devices. Just ask Alexa to turn on lights or touch the screen to dim. Create routines that use motion detection to turn down the thermostat as you head out or open the blinds when you walk into a room.

For that reason, treat a retention statement as scoped: note the provider, region, program, data type and date of the policy. If you need a current answer, open the controls in your own account and read the confirmation text before relying on a stated period.

Does disabling audio storage stop the assistant from working?

Usually, the assistant can still process a request when you decline long-term audio storage; processing and retention are separate operations. Features that depend on history, personalization or improvement data may behave differently, so check the notice shown when you change the setting.

Can another person hear my recordings?

Anyone who can access the relevant account, shared device profile or history page may be able to view available recordings or transcripts. Use separate accounts on shared devices, protect account sign-ins and review history regularly, especially after a false wake.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safest expectation is that an assistant may create more than one record of a request. Control audio, text activity, improvement participation and device history individually, then verify the result in the provider’s current privacy dashboard.
