VMware vSphere VM encryption protects the virtual machine’s stored configuration and virtual-disk data by using encryption keys supplied by a configured key provider. It is a control for data managed as VM objects in vSphere—not a promise that every byte associated with the workload is encrypted in every location or state.

The practical consequence is that encryption becomes dependent on key-management availability. If the required key cannot be retrieved, the VM can be locked, fail to power on, or fail to migrate. You must therefore plan key-provider setup, backup, permissions, snapshots, migration, and recovery together.

What vSphere VM encryption is

vSphere VM encryption applies cryptographic protection to VM configuration and virtual-disk objects. The encryption keys are held by a key provider rather than being treated as an ordinary VM file. vSphere requests the key when an operation needs to open, run, move, or otherwise process an encrypted VM.

This design protects stored VM objects against someone who obtains the underlying files without also obtaining the required key. It does not change the trust model of a running guest: software or administrators with legitimate access inside the guest can still work with data in plaintext while applications use it.

The key-provider dependency is central. Native Key Provider is available from vSphere 7.0 Update 2 and later, but it is not configured automatically. An organization can also use an external key-management server (KMS). In either case, the provider must be valid, reachable, and backed up according to the provider’s recovery procedure before encryption is used.

For release-specific details about encrypted file types, memory state, snapshot artifacts, exports, backups, and external copies, consult the complete vSphere Security documentation for the exact release. The operational support material available for this topic does not establish one universal coverage matrix for every vSphere version.

What encryption protects

VM configuration data

VM configuration is an encrypted object when the VM is encrypted. Configuration includes the settings vSphere uses to describe the virtual hardware and how the VM is managed. Protecting this object helps prevent someone with access to datastore files from reading configuration details without the key.

Virtual-disk data at rest

The virtual disks attached to an encrypted VM are treated as encrypted VM data. This is the main protection most administrators seek: datastore-resident disk blocks are not usable as ordinary plaintext files by a person who lacks the encryption key and the authorization to use it.

Encryption at rest should not be confused with application-level encryption, database encryption, or encryption of network traffic. Those controls address different paths. VM encryption protects the vSphere-managed VM object; it does not automatically encrypt every protocol connection to the guest or every copy made by another system.

Operations that require the key

Because vSphere must obtain the key to work with encrypted objects, key access becomes an enforcement point. A host that cannot retrieve the key cannot reliably perform operations such as powering on the VM or completing an encrypted migration. This dependency is a security property and an availability risk at the same time.

What VM encryption does not guarantee

Plaintext inside a running guest

When the operating system and applications are running, they must be able to read their own data. A person who controls the guest, a process with sufficient in-guest privileges, or an administrator who can inspect the running workload may be able to access plaintext. VM encryption is not a substitute for guest hardening, identity controls, application encryption, or secure administration.

Every snapshot artifact

Broadcom’s snapshot guidance explains that a snapshot can optionally include the VM’s memory and describes snapshot files. It does not, in the material available here, establish a universal rule that every memory artifact or snapshot-related file is encrypted identically across all vSphere releases and workflows.

What is established operationally is narrower: changing a VM’s encryption state fails when snapshots are present. For vSphere 7.x and 8.x, remove all snapshots before changing the VM between encrypted and unencrypted states. Do not interpret that restriction as proof that every snapshot scenario has the same encryption behavior.

Backups, exports, and copies outside vSphere

A backup product, export workflow, replication target, copied datastore, diagnostic bundle, or other external system may create a separate representation of the VM. The evidence available here does not define universal encryption coverage for those paths. Treat each destination as a separate data-protection boundary and verify its own encryption and key-retention controls.

Keys themselves

Encryption cannot help if the organization loses the key or loses the ability to retrieve it. Keep the key-provider system operational, restrict and audit access to it, and maintain a secure recovery copy according to the provider’s documented procedure. A backup of VM files without the corresponding key material may not restore usability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Key-provider choices

vSphere supports two broad approaches. The right choice depends less on a theoretical encryption strength difference than on who operates the provider, how recovery is performed, and how hosts obtain keys during normal and emergency operations.

Approach What your team operates Continuity questions When it fits
vSphere Native Key Provider Configure it in vSphere; it can be used without a separate external key server. Has it been configured manually, backed up before encryption tasks, and included in tested recovery procedures? Organizations that want a vSphere-integrated provider and do not require an external KMS for this use case.
External KMS The KMS service, its authentication, network path, backup, and administrative controls. Can every participating host reach the service? Are key backups, failover, rotation, and recovery responsibilities documented? Organizations that already operate centralized key-management controls or require them for governance.

The available sources do not provide comparative performance measurements, prices, or vendor rankings for these approaches. Evaluate operational ownership and recovery capability rather than assuming one option is universally superior.

Requirements and permissions

Provider configuration

For Native Key Provider, Broadcom’s configuration guidance applies to vSphere 7.0 Update 2 and later. It is a manual setup step, not a default service. Back up the provider before using it for encryption tasks, and protect that backup as sensitive key material.

vCenter privileges

In the vCenter Server 8.0 context, the encryption controls require cryptographic-operation privileges that include Encrypt new and Decrypt, together with VM storage-policy permissions to view and update the relevant policy. A valid configured key provider is also required. If the encryption toggle is missing, check both the provider state and the user’s effective privileges rather than assuming the VM is incompatible.

Host and network access

Every host that may run or receive the encrypted VM must be able to obtain the required key. For an external KMS, verify DNS, routing, firewall rules, certificates or trust configuration, and the service account or authentication method used by vSphere. For a Native Key Provider, verify that the vCenter and participating hosts retain the provider configuration and that recovery material is available.

Implementation workflow

  1. Choose the provider model. Decide whether Native Key Provider or an external KMS matches your organization’s key-management, separation-of-duties, and recovery requirements.
  2. Configure the provider in vSphere. Complete the provider setup in the vSphere Client and confirm that its status is valid. Do not begin encrypting production VMs while the provider is still unconfigured or reporting an error.
  3. Back up key-provider material. Follow the provider’s documented backup procedure and store the recovery copy in a protected location separate from the vSphere environment. Record who can restore it and under what approvals.
  4. Assign least-privilege access. Grant only the administrators and automation accounts that need encryption operations the required cryptographic and VM storage-policy privileges. Review inherited permissions as well as direct assignments.
  5. Check VM state. Before changing encryption state, inspect the VM for snapshots. Remove all snapshots if the operation is a state change; vSphere 7.x and 8.x can fail the change while snapshots remain.
  6. Apply the encryption setting or policy. Use the VM’s encryption control or storage policy according to your vSphere version. Confirm that the task completes and that the VM reports the expected encryption state.
  7. Validate normal operations. Power the VM on and off, perform an approved migration test, and verify that each participating host can retrieve the key. These checks should be part of your change plan, not an assumption.
  8. Document recovery. Record the provider identity, backup location, contacts, dependencies, and the procedure for restoring key access. Keep this documentation available even if the primary vCenter is unavailable.

Day-to-day operations and failure modes

Symptom Likely dependency Action
VM is locked or will not power on The required key is missing, unavailable, or the host cannot retrieve it from the provider. Restore provider connectivity or key availability first. Check provider health, host connectivity, authentication, and recovery records; do not repeatedly retry power-on while the key remains unavailable.
vMotion fails with “An encryption key is required” The destination or participating host cannot obtain a key required by the VM. Verify that the destination host is configured for the same provider, can reach it, and is authorized to retrieve the key. Retry only after the key path is healthy.
Encryption toggle is absent Missing cryptographic or VM storage-policy privileges, or no valid key provider. In vCenter Server 8.0, check Cryptographic operations > Encrypt new, Cryptographic operations > Decrypt, storage-policy view/update permissions, and provider validity.
Changing encryption state fails One or more snapshots exist. Remove all snapshots, confirm consolidation has completed, and then repeat the state change in accordance with your change-control process.

These are not merely configuration inconveniences. A key-provider outage can become a workload outage, so monitor the provider and its network path with the same seriousness as other virtualization control-plane dependencies.

How to reason about protection boundaries

Ask four separate questions for every copy of sensitive data: where is the object stored, who can obtain its key, whether it is running or at rest, and whether another system has made a copy. VM encryption answers the at-rest question for vSphere-managed VM objects. It does not automatically answer the questions for guest memory, backup repositories, exported files, replication systems, or files copied by an administrator.

  • Datastore files: treat encrypted VM configuration and virtual disks as protected objects, provided key access is correctly controlled.
  • Running workload: assume authorized guest and host administration can expose plaintext needed for operation.
  • Snapshots: follow the documented snapshot-state restriction and verify the exact behavior for your release before making a coverage claim about memory or snapshot files.
  • Backups and exports: verify encryption, access control, and key retention in the product or destination that creates them.
  • Recovery: preserve provider backups and test the restoration procedure under controlled conditions so an encrypted VM is not stranded by a lost key.

Version and evidence limits

Native Key Provider support begins with vSphere 7.0 Update 2, while the privilege guidance cited here is specifically framed for vCenter Server 8.0. Snapshot-state guidance applies to vSphere 7.x and 8.x. Other releases, editions, integrations, and backup products may differ.
