There is no single VESA mount size that fits every monitor arm. Use the monitor’s specified mounting-hole pattern, then choose an arm that explicitly supports that same pattern. A VESA pattern is written as width × height in millimeters, measured from the center of one mounting hole to the center of the next. For example, 100 × 100 mm means the horizontal and vertical center-to-center distances are both 100 mm.

Check the monitor manual or manufacturer specification first. If the pattern is not listed, measure the rear holes yourself, then verify the arm’s supported pattern and weight range before buying.

What a VESA mount size actually describes

“VESA mount size” normally means the spacing of the threaded mounting holes on the back of a display. The Video Electronics Standards Association calls its flat-display mounting framework the Flat Display Mounting Interface (FDMI). Its stated purpose is “to define mounting interface standards for Flat Displays (FDs) such as flat panel monitors, flat displays and flat TVs.”

The size is not the monitor’s diagonal screen measurement, bezel width, or the diameter of a screw. It is the distance between hole centers. A designation such as 75 × 75 mm describes a square pattern: 75 mm horizontally and 75 mm vertically. A 100 × 100 mm designation is another square pattern, with both distances measuring 100 mm. If a monitor uses a rectangular layout, the first number is the horizontal center-to-center distance and the second is the vertical distance.

VESA’s FDMI overview covers displays with diagonal viewing areas from 102 mm (4 inches) to 2286 mm (90 inches). That range describes the scope of the interface document; it does not mean every display in that range uses one hole pattern, or that screen size alone tells you which arm will fit.

How to find your monitor’s VESA pattern

Check the manual or specification page first

The most reliable method is to locate the exact monitor model in its manual or manufacturer specifications. Look for labels such as “VESA,” “VESA mount,” “FDMI,” “mounting pattern,” or a designation in millimeters. Record the complete pattern exactly as written, including both dimensions.

Use the model number from the monitor’s rear label or on-screen information rather than relying on a similar product name. Variants in the same product family can have different rear interfaces. A specification for one size or revision should not be assumed to apply to another.

Measure the holes when the specification is missing

If no pattern is published, inspect the back of the monitor. You are looking for four threaded holes arranged in a square or rectangle, usually around the mounting recess. Measure from the center of one hole to the center of the hole opposite it horizontally, then repeat vertically.

  1. Turn the monitor off, disconnect its cables, and place it screen-down on a clean, padded surface if you need to inspect the back. Follow the monitor manufacturer’s handling instructions.
  2. Identify the mounting holes, not ventilation openings, cable recesses, speaker openings, or decorative inserts. A mounting hole normally has visible threads or a metal insert.
  3. Choose two holes on the same horizontal row. Measure the center of one hole to the center of the other in millimeters.
  4. Choose two holes in the same vertical column and measure center to center in millimeters.
  5. Write the result as horizontal distance × vertical distance. For a square layout, both numbers will match, such as 75 × 75 mm or 100 × 100 mm.
  6. Repeat the measurement from another pair of holes. Small errors are easier to spot when both sides produce the same result.
  7. If the holes are recessed, measure between their centers rather than between the outside edges of the recess. Measuring edge to edge can produce a number that does not match any arm specification.
  8. Keep the original units. Convert to millimeters before comparing with an arm listing if your ruler is marked in inches.

Do not infer the pattern from the screen’s diagonal size. Two monitors with the same diagonal measurement can have different mounting layouts, and one monitor family can use different layouts across sizes.

Match the monitor pattern to the arm’s listed pattern

Use an explicit pattern match

Once you know the monitor pattern, read the arm’s specification and look for that exact width × height combination. The arm must list the pattern; a statement that it is “VESA compatible” without dimensions does not establish which layout it accepts.

Ergotron’s LX Pro specification is a concrete example: it lists MIS-D 100/75, meaning support for both 100 × 100 mm and 75 × 75 mm patterns. That specification applies to the cited LX Pro model only. It is not evidence that every monitor arm accepts both layouts.

Mounting pattern Center-to-center spacing Listed on the cited LX Pro specification
75 × 75 mm 75 mm horizontally and 75 mm vertically Yes
100 × 100 mm 100 mm horizontally and 100 mm vertically Yes

If your monitor has a pattern that is not listed by the arm, treat the combination as unconfirmed. Do not assume that a plate with four slots, a similar-looking bracket, or a generic VESA label will accommodate it.

Confirm the interface, not just the spacing

Hole spacing is only one part of the interface. The arm’s plate must also physically reach the holes, and its supplied fasteners must be appropriate for the monitor’s threaded inserts. Check the arm instructions for any model-specific restrictions, such as a required recess depth, limited screw length, or an installation orientation. These details vary by product and are not established by the FDMI name alone.

Check the arm’s weight range separately

A matching hole pattern does not prove that an arm can safely hold the monitor. Compare the monitor’s stated weight with the arm’s published load range. Use the weight definition in the relevant instructions, especially if the manufacturer distinguishes between a bare display and a display with its stand or accessories.

The cited Ergotron LX Pro specification lists a load range of 1.8–10 kg. That range belongs to that model and should not be generalized to unrelated arms. If your monitor’s weight falls outside the arm’s range, select a different arm even when the VESA holes line up.

  • Record the monitor weight from the exact model documentation.
  • Check whether the arm’s range is stated per monitor, per mounting head, or for a particular configuration.
  • Stay within the published lower and upper limits; do not treat a close measurement as automatically acceptable.
  • Account for any plate, adapter, or other component whose weight the arm instructions require you to include.

What to do if the monitor has no matching VESA pattern

Look for a documented model-specific adapter

An adapter can be a valid path when the monitor and arm do not share a pattern, but compatibility must be established for the exact monitor and exact arm. The available VESA and product materials do not establish one universal adapter or verify that a particular adapter fits every display.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Before relying on an adapter, obtain documentation that identifies your monitor model, the arm model, the supported hole layout, the required fasteners, and the resulting weight limit. An adapter that changes spacing may add depth or alter the load on the arm, so follow its installation and capacity instructions rather than assuming the original arm rating still applies unchanged.

Get manufacturer confirmation for proprietary interfaces

Some displays use a proprietary rear interface or a stand connection that does not follow a listed FDMI pattern. If the holes are absent, unusual, or not identified in the manual, contact the monitor manufacturer and the arm manufacturer before purchasing hardware. Ask for written confirmation of the required adapter or mounting method for the exact model numbers.

A practical buying and installation workflow

  1. Identify the exact monitor model. Read the rear label or the monitor’s system-information screen and record the complete model designation.
  2. Find the published pattern. Check the manual and manufacturer specification for a VESA, FDMI, or MIS-D listing.
  3. Measure if necessary. Measure horizontal and vertical hole-center distances in millimeters and write the result as width × height.
  4. Choose an arm with an explicit match. Verify that the arm lists your exact pattern rather than only saying “VESA compatible.”
  5. Compare weights. Confirm that the monitor’s stated weight falls inside the arm’s published load range.
  6. Review installation restrictions. Check the arm instructions for recess, screw, orientation, depth, or mounting-surface requirements that apply to your setup.
  7. Resolve exceptions before ordering. If the pattern is proprietary or absent, obtain model-specific adapter guidance or manufacturer confirmation.
  8. Install according to both manuals. Use the supplied or specified fasteners, tighten them as instructed, and avoid forcing a screw that does not engage correctly.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming every arm supports 75 × 75 and 100 × 100

Those two patterns appear together in the cited LX Pro specification, but one product specification cannot establish a universal rule. Always read the dimensions for the arm you are actually buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Measuring from edges instead of centers

Hole diameter, insert rims, and a recessed mounting pocket can make edge-to-edge measurements look plausible while producing the wrong pattern. Measure center to center in both directions.

Confusing diagonal size with mounting size

A 27-inch, 32-inch, or other diagonal measurement does not identify the VESA pattern. Use the model specification or a physical center-to-center measurement.

Checking spacing but ignoring weight

An arm can have the right plate and still be unsuitable for the monitor’s mass. Perform the load-range check independently of the pattern check.

Buying an adapter without model confirmation

“Universal” wording is not proof that an adapter fits your monitor, reaches the arm plate, accepts the required fasteners, or preserves the applicable load rating. Require documentation for both exact models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Quick decision checklist

  • Do you have the monitor’s exact model number?
  • Is its VESA or FDMI pattern stated in the manual or manufacturer specification?
  • If not, have you measured horizontal and vertical hole centers in millimeters?
  • Does the arm list that exact pattern?
  • Is the monitor’s stated weight inside the arm’s published range?
  • Have you checked recess, screw, depth, and installation restrictions?
  • If the interface is proprietary or unmatched, do you have model-specific adapter or manufacturer confirmation?

The correct purchase decision is therefore a two-part match: the monitor’s hole pattern must appear in the arm specification, and the monitor’s weight must fall within the arm’s stated capacity. Treat any unlisted pattern or adapter combination as unverified until the relevant manufacturers confirm it.
