USDT0 on Polygon is Polygon’s current USDT deployment using the USDT0 cross-chain system. It uses LayerZero’s Omnichain Fungible Token (OFT) design: canonical USDT is locked on Ethereum, while corresponding USDT0 representations on remote chains are minted and burned as verified messages move between networks. Polygon migrated from its earlier Proof-of-Stake bridge representation to USDT0 on August 27, 2025. Official migration notices said the Polygon token address was retained and existing holders did not need to take action.
The practical implications are straightforward but important: confirm the complete Polygon contract address, select a supported route, budget gas on the chains involved, and distinguish a project-stated security configuration from independent proof of reserves or safety.
What USDT0 on Polygon means
USDT0 is the cross-chain deployment of Tether’s US dollar stablecoin described by USDT0 and LayerZero. On Polygon, it is the token users receive when they bridge USDT to Polygon through the USDT0 route. The token uses six decimal places, like the underlying USDT representation documented for the system.

“USDT0” describes a settlement architecture, not a separate dollar. The system connects an Ethereum adapter that holds canonical USDT with fungible-token deployments on other networks. Depending on the route, the remote deployment can mint or burn tokens while the Ethereum-side backing remains in a lockbox. That distinction matters when comparing USDT0 with the older Polygon arrangement, which represented USDT through the Polygon Proof-of-Stake bridge.

What changed in Polygon’s 2025 migration
Polygon announced on August 27, 2025 that Polygon USDT had been upgraded to native USDT0. Before the migration, Polygon’s USDT was represented as a child asset issued through the Polygon Proof-of-Stake bridge. USDT0’s migration announcement said the prior Polygon USDT contract address was retained, while cross-chain settlement moved to the LayerZero OFT standard and the backing supply was migrated to an Ethereum lockbox.
Both Polygon and USDT0 said holders did not need to perform a conversion. In practical terms, a wallet that already held the Polygon token did not need a manual swap solely because of the migration. Applications, exchanges and bridge interfaces still need to support the post-migration route, so an integration’s current status should be checked rather than inferred from the historical contract arrangement.

How the USDT0 architecture works
The Ethereum adapter
USDT0 documents an upgradeable Ethereum adapter, called an OAdapterUpgradeable. It handles cross-chain messaging and locks canonical USDT when tokens leave Ethereum. When tokens return, the adapter can unlock the corresponding underlying USDT after the remote-side burn and verified message.
Remote-chain OFT contracts
Other supported networks run OUpgradeable deployments. These contracts participate in messaging and implement the mint-and-burn behavior needed for a fungible supply that spans chains. A TetherTokenOFTExtension, or an equivalent mint/burn interface, provides the remote token behavior described in the developer documentation.
What “omnichain” means here
For Ethereum-to-remote transfers, the adapter locks the source USDT and a verified message causes the destination deployment to mint the corresponding amount. For a return to Ethereum, the remote USDT0 is burned and the adapter is instructed to unlock the underlying USDT.

For transfers between two non-Ethereum chains that both use OFT deployments, the source token is burned and an equal amount is minted on the destination after the message is verified. The Ethereum adapter and its locked backing do not move in that transaction. This is the documented architecture; it should not be presented as an independent audit conclusion.
What happens when you bridge USDT to Polygon
- Connect a wallet. The official Polygon widget lists MetaMask, Rabby, Coinbase Smart Wallet and wallets connected through WalletConnect. The listing does not establish support for any particular hardware wallet.
- Choose the asset and source network. Select USDT on the chain from which you are sending. Check that the selected asset is the intended canonical or supported USDT route, not a similarly named token.
- Select Polygon as the destination. The interface should show whether the route is an USDT0 Network-to-USDT0 Network transfer or a Legacy Mesh route.
- Review the quote and transaction details. Check the amount arriving, protocol fee, estimated gas, destination chain and recipient address. A protocol fee of zero does not mean the transaction is free.
- Approve and confirm in the wallet. An ERC-20 approval may be required before the transfer transaction. Confirm the spender and amount in the wallet rather than approving an unrelated contract.
- Wait for message verification and destination delivery. The destination token is minted only after the cross-chain message is accepted by the configured verification system. Do not assume a fixed completion time; congestion, source finality and route conditions can change it.
Returning from Polygon to Ethereum
The reverse path burns the Polygon-side USDT0 and sends a message to the Ethereum adapter. After verification, the adapter unlocks the corresponding underlying USDT. You need gas on Polygon for the burn transaction and gas on Ethereum for any destination-side action the route requires.
Moving between two remote OFT chains
When both source and destination are remote OFT deployments, the source balance is burned and the destination balance is minted after verification. The locked Ethereum backing is not transferred in that transaction. This is why a remote-to-remote transfer is not the same operation as withdrawing canonical USDT from Ethereum.
Fees, gas and token precision
The official Polygon page distinguishes protocol fees from network gas. Its stated fee schedule is:
| Route | Stated protocol fee | What you still pay |
|---|---|---|
| USDT0 Network to USDT0 Network | 0 basis points (0%) | Gas on the source and destination chains; availability and estimates can change. |
| Legacy Mesh involving native USDT on Solana, TON, Tron or Celo | 0.03% (3 basis points), charged in USDT | Network gas or transaction costs required by the source and destination route. |
“Zero protocol fee” therefore does not guarantee a zero-cost transfer. Gas prices, destination execution requirements and any wallet or exchange charge are separate. A 3-basis-point fee means 0.03% of the transferred amount; for example, a 1,000-USDT transfer would have a stated protocol fee of 0.30 USDT before other costs, if that route is available and the quoted fee applies.
USDT0 uses six decimal places. A value displayed in a wallet or application should be interpreted using that precision, especially when entering small amounts or checking a contract interaction.

How transfers are secured—and what that does not prove
Polygon’s USDT0 page says transfers to and from Polygon are secured by LayerZero and the USDT0 Attestation System. It describes a 3-of-3 Core Attestation Set made up of USDT0, LayerZero and Canary. The developer guide likewise describes a 3/3 DVN security configuration. In the documented design, every message requires sign-off from the configured verifier set before the destination-side action proceeds.
Those statements describe the system’s declared configuration. They do not independently verify current reserves, establish that every operational component is risk-free, or eliminate bridge, oracle, validator, key-management and smart-contract risks. The available documentation does not independently reconcile current Polygon supply with Ethereum lockbox balances, and it does not provide a Polygon-specific independent audit conclusion on backing.
Compliance blocklists
USDT0’s additional-token-behavior documentation says the shared EVM implementation includes an on-chain compliance blocklist. A blocked address can be prevented from sending tokens or invoking specified transfer functions. This is an issuer-controlled restriction and can affect an otherwise valid wallet or route.
Upgradeable contracts
The token contracts use upgradeable proxies. The documentation identifies the canonical Matic proxy for Polygon PoS. Upgradeability allows authorized parties to change implementation logic, so USDT0 should not be described as an immutable token. Users and integrators should monitor official change notices and verify contract metadata when a security-sensitive integration depends on a particular implementation.
Is USDT0 on Polygon the same as USDT?
It is the Polygon deployment intended to represent USDT within the USDT0 cross-chain system, but its settlement path differs from the pre-2025 bridged representation. USDT0 uses OFT messaging, Ethereum lockbox backing and remote-chain mint/burn behavior. A token with the USDT symbol on another chain may use a different bridge, issuer contract or representation.
For a transfer decision, the chain and contract address matter more than the symbol. Confirm that the receiving service accepts the Polygon contract listed above and that the selected bridge route supports the exact source and destination networks.

Common failure modes and how to respond
The destination balance has not appeared
Check the source transaction status first, then confirm that the message has reached the verification stage. Verify the destination chain and recipient address in the widget and wallet. Do not submit a second transfer merely because the first one is not yet visible; route congestion or finality requirements can delay delivery.
The wallet shows an approval request
An approval is normal for an ERC-20 transfer, but inspect the spender address and allowance amount. Reject the transaction if the wallet presents an unfamiliar contract or an amount that does not match your intended transfer.

The recipient may support USDT on another chain but not Polygon USDT0. Ask for the exact network and contract they accept before sending. A token-symbol match is insufficient for exchange deposits, custodial wallets and payment platforms.
A route or fee is unavailable
USDT0 route support is not universal. Reopen the official widget, select the exact source and destination chains, and read the current quote. Legacy Mesh pricing and supported networks can change independently of USDT0-to-USDT0 routes.
How USDT0 compares with the former Polygon bridge representation
| Characteristic | Former Polygon arrangement | USDT0 deployment |
|---|---|---|
| Representation | USDT represented as a child asset through the Polygon Proof-of-Stake bridge. | OFT-based Polygon deployment connected to an Ethereum adapter and lockbox. |
| Cross-chain settlement | Legacy bridge settlement. | Verified messaging with remote-chain burn-and-mint behavior; Ethereum routes lock or unlock canonical USDT. |
| Polygon address after migration | Historical representation. | Migration announcement said the prior Polygon token address was retained. |
| Holder action in August 2025 | Migration event. | Official notices said existing holders did not need to act. |
| Independent assurance | Not established here. | Current backing and security were not independently verified by the available documentation. |
The comparison describes representation and documented settlement mechanics, not a controlled speed, cost or safety test. No universal faster, cheaper or safer outcome should be inferred without route-specific evidence.
Who should use the Polygon USDT0 route?
- Use it when: the source and destination are explicitly supported, the recipient accepts the Polygon contract, and the quoted fee and gas fit your transaction.
- Pause when: a custodial service gives only a symbol without a network, the contract address differs, or the route requires an unfamiliar spender approval.
- Use extra caution when: sending a large amount, interacting with a compliance-sensitive address, or relying on a smart contract that assumes an immutable token implementation.
USDT0’s main benefit on Polygon is a standardized cross-chain representation that can move liquidity through verified messaging rather than requiring users to manage separate wrapped-token versions for every route. Its trade-offs are the trust placed in the attestation and smart-contract system, issuer-controlled compliance and upgradeability, plus the practical need to verify route support and pay network gas.
