USB-C identifies the connector shape, not a cable’s charging wattage or data speed. Read the separate power and data markings, then check whether the exact product is USB-IF certified if a logo is claimed. A cable marked 60W is rated for up to 60 watts under the relevant USB-C requirements; it does not make a phone, charger, computer, dock, or monitor deliver that power automatically. Likewise, a 20Gbps or 40Gbps mark describes the cable’s data capability, not guaranteed performance for every device combination.

USB-C is a connector family, not a performance rating

The reversible USB-C plug can be used for many different USB implementations. Two cables with identical-looking plugs may have different power capabilities and data rates. The equipment at both ends also matters: a charger, computer, phone, dock, display, and operating system must support the mode you intend to use.

USB-IF’s cable-marking rules therefore treat power and data as separate dimensions. Start by identifying the cable’s explicit wattage and data-rate marks instead of inferring capability from the connector alone. A cable can fit physically while lacking the power or data performance required by your setup.

How to decode the marks on a USB-C cable

Mark or wording What it tells you What it does not prove
60W power icon or “60W” The USB-C-to-USB-C cable’s stated power capability in the USB-IF compliance program is 60 watts. That every connected device will draw 60W, or that the charger and device can supply or accept it.
240W power icon or “240W” The cable is marked for the higher 240-watt power capability covered by the compliance guidance. That a 240W charger, a 240W-capable device, or a particular charging protocol is present.
20Gbps, 40Gbps, or another data-rate mark The cable’s labeled data-rate class, when the applicable USB-IF requirement calls for one. Video output, a specific display mode, or actual throughput in every setup.
Combined mark such as 20Gbps/60W Both the data rate and power capability are stated; interpret each number independently. That either connected device supports both maximums simultaneously.
USB-IF certified logo The product is intended to be covered by USB-IF’s certified-logo program. That the whole system will reach the cable’s maximum rating in your use case.
No data-rate mark on a USB-C-to-USB-C cable It may be a USB 2.0 High-Speed cable, which is an exception to the cited data-rate-marking requirement, or it may not be in the covered compliance category. That it supports high-speed USB, display output, or any particular transfer rate.

Power labels: 60W and 240W

What the 60W label means

USB-IF’s current USB-C-to-USB-C cable compliance guidance specifies a 60W capability marking. A cable carrying the appropriate 60W icon or logo is labeled for that power level. The label describes what the cable is designed and tested to carry within the applicable compliance program; it is not a charging promise for every device.

  • Durable Design: Reinforced nylon exterior and a robust core ensure this cable withstands up to 5,000 bends, outlasting other brands
  • Fast Charging: Supports Power Delivery for up to 60W high-speed charging when paired with a USB-C charger

  • High-Speed Data Transfer: Transfer files quickly with 480Mbps data transfer speeds
  • Included Accessories: Comes with a hook-and-loop cable tie for easy organization and a welcome guide for hassle-free setup

For example, if a laptop accepts only 45W, it will not turn into a 60W system merely because the cable says 60W. The charger must be able to provide the required power, the laptop must request and accept it, and the charging arrangement must negotiate a supported level. The same principle applies to phones, tablets, docks, and power banks.

What the 240W label means

The higher 240W marking covers USB-C-to-USB-C cables intended for substantially higher-power applications. USB-IF’s compliance updates record 240W logo enforcement as effective in December 2021 and the requirement to label cables before compliance testing as effective in March 2022. Those dates describe the compliance program’s rule changes, not a guarantee that every cable sold before or after them has the same capability.

A 240W mark is useful only when the rest of the chain is designed for that level. A 240W-rated cable connected to a lower-power charger or device simply operates at the lower negotiated level. Conversely, using a cable without a sufficient rating can limit charging or create an unsuitable setup for equipment that expects more power.

Why the number is a capability, not power delivered

  • Source: The charger or power source must offer the required output.
  • Sink: The phone, computer, dock, or other device must accept that level.
  • Negotiation: The USB-C power system selects a level supported by the source, cable, and device.
  • System limits: Firmware, temperature, battery state, and the device’s own design can reduce charging power.

Consequently, compare the cable’s rating with the highest requirement in your setup, but do not read the printed wattage as a measured charging result.

Data-rate labels: 20Gbps, 40Gbps, and the USB 2.0 exception

Why USB-C alone cannot tell you speed

The connector’s shape says nothing about whether a cable uses USB 2.0 signaling or a faster USB implementation. USB-IF’s guidance says cables in the covered group generally need an appropriate data-rate marking, with USB 2.0 High-Speed USB-C-to-USB-C cables specifically excepted from that requirement. Therefore, an unmarked cable may be a basic USB 2.0 cable, but the absence of a mark by itself does not establish a speed or certification status.

Reading a 20Gbps or 40Gbps mark

A printed “20Gbps” or “40Gbps” is a data-performance label. It helps you choose a cable for large file transfers or a high-bandwidth dock, provided the host and peripheral support the same standard. The figure is a signaling class or rated maximum, not a promise that file copies will run at exactly that number; storage speed, protocol overhead, device controllers, and workload affect observed throughput.

Do not infer display support from a data-rate number alone. Display output can depend on the computer’s port, graphics support, dock or adapter design, display mode, and the cable’s implementation. The USB-IF marking guidance establishes power and data labeling, but it does not make every cable with a particular data-rate mark a universal video cable.

Combined markings: read each number on its own axis

Some marks combine power and data information. USB-IF gives a 20Gbps/60W combined logo as an example. In that mark, “20Gbps” is the data-rate claim and “60W” is the power-capability claim. Neither number modifies the other, and the pair does not override limitations imposed by the connected equipment.

When comparing two combined marks, first decide the required power, then the required data rate. A 40Gbps cable may be unnecessary for a setup that only transfers USB 2.0 data, while a 60W cable may be insufficient for equipment designed around the higher power class. Choose the smallest combination that satisfies the actual requirements rather than assuming the largest numbers are always better.

What a USB-IF certification logo means

USB-IF says its certified USB logos are reserved for products that have passed the organization’s compliance testing, are currently on its Integrators List, and are covered by a current trademark license agreement. That is stronger evidence than a seller simply printing “certified” in a product description.

Certification applies to the product and the scope for which it was tested. It does not certify every charger, computer, dock, monitor, or operating-system combination you might connect. A certified cable can still be limited by a non-compliant or lower-rated device elsewhere in the chain.

How to verify a claimed logo

  1. Write down the cable’s exact product name, model or part number, and manufacturer.
  2. Open USB-IF’s public certified-product search and search for that exact product information.
  3. Check that the listing corresponds to the cable, not merely to a company or a different product family.
  4. Note the registry’s date behavior: the public search defaults to products certified within the last two years, so an older certification may not appear in the default view.
  5. If you cannot find the product, contact the manufacturer with the model and ask for the certification record. USB-IF specifically advises contacting the manufacturer when a product is not found.

The registry is maintained by member companies and can change. Treat a current listing as evidence of the logo program’s status, not as a guarantee of a particular charging result.

How to choose a replacement USB-C cable

1. List what each end must do

Confirm whether the cable will connect USB-C to USB-C or use another connector at one end. A USB-C-to-USB-C cable is the type covered by the 60W and 240W marking guidance described above. Connector fit is only the first check; the source and destination devices determine the required power and data capabilities.

2. Set the power requirement

Check the charger’s output and the device maker’s stated input requirement. Select a cable marked 60W when that capability covers the setup, or a 240W-marked cable when the equipment genuinely requires the higher class. If no device in the chain needs high power, buying the highest number adds no demonstrated benefit.

3. Set the data requirement

For occasional charging and basic synchronization, a USB 2.0 cable may be adequate. For large transfers or a bandwidth-sensitive dock, look for the data-rate mark that meets the host and peripheral requirements. Do not assume that a cable with a fast-looking connector supports a fast data mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Check the physical details

  • Length: Choose a length that reaches without tension or excessive slack.
  • Flexibility and routing: Make sure the jacket and bend radius suit a desk, travel kit, or dock installation.
  • Connector arrangement: Verify both ends and whether an adapter is being introduced.
  • Mark visibility: If the rating matters, ensure the printed mark or packaging clearly states it rather than relying on vague “fast” language.

5. Verify certification only when it matters to your decision

If a listing prominently uses a USB-IF logo, confirm the exact product in the public registry. Certification can provide useful assurance, but it does not replace matching the cable to the devices’ power and data needs.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

“USB-C means fast charging.”

Correction: USB-C describes the connector. Read the 60W or 240W capability marking and check the charger and device specifications.

“A 240W cable will charge anything at 240W.”

Correction: The cable is only one component. The source, sink, and negotiated power level can all be lower.

“The cable says 20Gbps, so my monitor will work.”

Correction: A data-rate mark does not by itself establish video support or a particular display resolution. Confirm compatibility for the computer, graphics path, dock, display, and cable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“There is no speed mark, so the cable is defective.”

Correction: USB 2.0 High-Speed USB-C-to-USB-C cables are an identified exception to the data-rate-marking requirement. Absence of a mark still leaves capability uncertain, so consult the product specification when speed matters.

“A certification logo printed on the package proves compliance.”

Correction: Search the exact product in USB-IF’s certified-product listing. The program requires compliance testing, current listing status, and a trademark license for logo use.

When a cable does not perform as expected

  1. Separate charging from data. Test whether the problem is slow charging, failed data transfer, or a display issue; each uses different requirements.
  2. Read every label again. Record the cable’s wattage and data-rate marks instead of relying on its USB-C shape.
  3. Check both devices. Confirm the charger output, device input, computer port capability, dock specifications, and any adapter in the chain.
  4. Remove variables. Test directly between the source and device with no hub or dock, then add accessories one at a time.
  5. Verify a claimed certification. Search the exact model in USB-IF’s public registry, remembering its default two-year date filter.
  6. Ask the manufacturer for missing details. If the model is absent from the registry or its data capability is unclear, request the specification rather than guessing from the connector.

Keeping the markings current

USB-IF’s cable-and-connector compliance document, Revision 2.1b dated March 28, 2025, covers mechanical, environmental, electrical-performance, and compliance requirements for USB Type-C connectors and passive cable assemblies. It is a technical compliance document, not a complete consumer decoding chart. USB-IF’s logo pages, compliance updates, and public product registry can change, so check the current versions when certification status is important.

The practical rule remains stable: identify the power mark, identify the data-rate mark, verify any certification claim, and match all three to the equipment you will actually use.
