Mint Mobile’s Unlimited plan includes up to 20GB of mobile-hotspot use, but “unlimited” does not mean unlimited hotspot data or guaranteed high-priority speeds. Mint says customers using more than 50GB in a monthly cycle may be prioritized below other traffic when the network is busy. Hotspot use counts toward that 50GB threshold, and Mint does not publish a fixed speed customers will receive after crossing it.
How the 20GB hotspot allowance and 50GB threshold differ
These are separate limits with different purposes. Mint describes up to 20GB of hotspot use on Unlimited; the 50GB figure is the total-use threshold for possible lower prioritization during competing network demand.
| Term | What it applies to | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 20GB | Mobile-hotspot use on Unlimited | Mint’s stated monthly hotspot allowance. Its hotspot help page explains that eligible customers can add data. |
| More than 50GB | Total data use in a monthly cycle, including tethering | Mint may prioritize the customer below other traffic when network resources are in competing demand. Mint’s Network Management Policy describes this as conditional, not a fixed speed cap. |
Using hotspot data therefore contributes to the 50GB total as well as using the hotspot allowance. Reaching 20GB does not itself mean a customer has reached 50GB of total use.
Does Mint slow you down after 50GB?
Not automatically to a published, fixed speed. Mint says Unlimited customers who use more than 50GB in a monthly cycle may have their data prioritized below other customers for the rest of that cycle when there is competing demand for network resources. That lower priority can mean slower service at a busy time or location; it does not guarantee that every customer will notice a slowdown.

Mint says the effect may be little or unnoticeable when the network is lightly loaded. It also says network congestion can reduce speeds for customers on any plan. The threshold changes priority under congestion; Mint does not state one universal post-threshold speed. Priority resets with the next monthly cycle.
Does hotspot count toward the 50GB limit?
Yes. Mint’s policy explicitly includes tethering in the data use considered for the Heavy Data User threshold. If a customer exceeds 50GB overall, hotspot traffic is also subject to lower prioritization during competing network demand for the remainder of the monthly cycle.

Can you add hotspot data when the 20GB runs out?
Mint’s hotspot help page says Unlimited customers can add hotspot and 5G/4G LTE data in 5GB or 10GB increments, provided they have funds in their Mint wallet. The page describes these purchase routes:

What speed and video behavior should you expect?
Mint’s Network Management Policy says cellular video is optimized to SD quality, typically 480p at up to 1.5 Mbps. This is Mint’s published description of its video optimization, not a measured result for a particular customer or location.
Mint also lists typical 5G on-device ranges of 127–455 Mbps download, 6–33 Mbps upload and 15–27 ms latency. These are provider-stated ranges, not guaranteed speeds or a prediction for a specific address. Mint says actual performance depends on factors including device, signal, location and network capacity.

How Unlimited differs from Mint’s other plans
Mint’s non-Unlimited plans have specified high-speed data allowances. After an allowance, speed may be reduced to 2G speeds—128 Kbps for most plans—or access may be suspended for the remaining period, as described in Mint’s terms. That is distinct from the Unlimited policy’s conditional lower prioritization after more than 50GB when the network has competing demand. See Mint’s plan page for current plan disclosures.

What to check before relying on the plan
- Confirm your expected hotspot use fits within the 20GB allowance, or check whether a current add-on is available.
- Remember that hotspot data contributes to the 50GB total-use threshold.
- Expect performance to vary with coverage, signal, compatible device, location, cell-site capacity, weather, interference and other users.
- Check Mint’s current plan terms and account options before purchasing; plan and add-on details can change.
