No—the series never confirms whether Alma is literally traveling through time. Undone keeps that possibility in tension with a psychological reading of her experiences, and its creators have said the uncertainty is intentional.
What happens to Alma in Undone?
Created by Kate Purdy and Raphael Bob-Waksberg, Undone follows Alma, who begins experiencing time differently after surviving a near-fatal car crash. She sees her dead father, Jacob, who tells her she can travel through time and asks her to help uncover the truth about his death. Amazon describes the series as exploring “the elastic nature of reality” through Alma’s changed relationship with time (Amazon Studios’ 2018 announcement).
The premise gives viewers two broad ways to interpret what they see. The show does not make either interpretation a final, objective answer.
Could Alma’s experiences have a psychological explanation?
The psychological reading draws on Alma’s trauma after the crash and her family history of schizophrenia. From that perspective, her encounters with Jacob and her sense of moving through time could be understood as experiences shaped by her mind and circumstances. The series presents this as an available interpretation, not a clinical diagnosis of Alma.

Jacob offers a different account: he treats Alma’s experiences as a real ability and invokes spiritual explanations for hearing voices. That is dialogue within the story, not a factual claim about Indigenous cultures or an endorsement of a particular belief system.
Does the show provide evidence that time travel is real?
It presents time travel as a possibility through Jacob’s claims and Alma’s experiences, but it does not give viewers a conclusive outside confirmation that settles the question. A key distinction is between what Alma or Jacob says and what the audience is shown directly. In the season-one finale, Alma sees something the audience does not, leaving viewers without the decisive evidence that might close the debate.

Co-creator Kate Purdy told Vanity Fair that the finale’s uncertainty was intended: “Our intention was for that exact thing to happen. It allows you to question internally…What do I want to be true?” She described the tension as whether Alma needs to believe in something larger to stay connected to her father or is relying on a delusion. The finale is designed to leave room for that question, not to hide a simple, confirmed solution.

The visual style helps the two interpretations coexist. Undone uses rotoscoping: actors are filmed, then their performances are transformed into animation. Amazon’s production feature describes filming performers on black-box sets and teams in Europe and Austin rotoscoping and painting the frames.

Because the ordinary scenes and the more extraordinary moments share a continuous visual world, the style does not neatly label one as objective reality and the other as fantasy. In a TIME interview published September 13, 2019, Bob-Waksberg said the creators considered what it would mean to frame the show as live action, then separate “the real world” from “the mental illness element or the science-fiction element.” Rotoscoping lets the show resist that sharp divide.
What should viewers take from the ending?
The most grounded answer is that the uncertainty is part of the story’s design. Purdy’s comments support reading the ending as a question about what Alma—and the viewer—wants to believe, rather than as proof of time travel or proof that the events are imagined. Bob-Waksberg has likewise described the show’s reality and speculative elements as intentionally intertwined.
