Short answer: Canonical’s official RISC-V downloads currently shown are server images, not desktop images. Ubuntu’s RISC-V server installer does not install a graphical user interface. The exact image, storage method and supported hardware depend on your board, and Ubuntu’s ISA requirements differ by release.

What the official RISC-V downloads actually provide

Canonical’s Canonical-built Ubuntu for RISC-V Platforms page presents board-specific downloads. The choices shown are Server preinstalled images and Server live installers; the page does not list a Canonical-built RISC-V desktop image.

That distinction matters because “Ubuntu for RISC-V” describes the processor architecture, not a single universal image. A file built for one board may contain different firmware, boot configuration or device support from an image built for another board. Canonical tells users to write the selected image to an SD or microSD card and then boot the board.

The release pages checked show the same pattern:

Ubuntu release listing RISC-V downloads shown Desktop ISO shown
Ubuntu 24.04.5 LTS Server images for RISC-V ARM64 desktop ISO
Ubuntu 25.10 Server images for RISC-V ARM64 desktop ISO

In other words, selecting “desktop” on an Ubuntu release page does not currently produce a RISC-V desktop ISO. The desktop ISO identified on those pages is for ARM64, while the RISC-V entries are server profiles.

What “server image” means for a RISC-V user

Ubuntu’s 24.04.5 release page explicitly describes the RISC-V server install image with this sentence: “It will not install a graphical user interface.” A first boot therefore gives you a command-line server installation rather than a graphical login screen.

This statement applies to that server install image. It does not establish that a graphical environment can never be installed manually afterward, and it does not describe every image made by a board vendor or other partner. A manually configured system would still need a compatible desktop stack, display hardware, graphics drivers and input devices; those details are board-dependent and are not promised by the official server image listing.

The practical implication is to plan for a headless or terminal-first setup. If your goal is a graphical workstation, verify that the board supplier provides a suitable image and graphics support before buying hardware. Do not assume that an Ubuntu RISC-V server download contains the packages or drivers needed for a desktop session.

Board support is specific, not generic

Use the image matched to your board

Canonical’s download page lists individual RISC-V platforms rather than one image guaranteed to boot every board. Read the entry for your exact model and follow its stated installation method. The image format, boot firmware and supported peripherals can vary between boards.

Headless limitations can be part of the image

Canonical identifies DeepComputing FML13V01 images as headless only, without GPU or Wi-Fi support. On hardware with those limitations, installing a desktop package would not by itself create a usable graphical workstation: there would still be no supported GPU path or wireless device in the image’s documented capability.

That limitation should not be generalized to every RISC-V board. Canonical separates its own builds from partner-built images, and a board-specific partner image can contain different components. Treat the board’s listing as the authority for that model.

Storage method changes the procedure

The standard instruction on Canonical’s page is to write the image to an SD or microSD card and boot from it. Some boards use eMMC or NVMe instead. Canonical advises using a Server live installer for some eMMC/NVMe configurations, so the preinstalled image and live installer are not interchangeable choices in every setup.

How to choose and boot the right image

  1. Identify the exact board revision. Record the manufacturer, model and revision, not just “RISC-V.” Similar boards can require different images.
  2. Open the board’s entry on Canonical’s RISC-V page. Confirm whether the download is a Server preinstalled image or a Server live installer and note any headless, GPU, Wi-Fi or storage caveats.
  3. Match the storage path. If the instructions call for SD or microSD, use that medium. If your board boots from eMMC or NVMe, follow the entry’s instruction about using a Server live installer.
  4. Write the image to the required medium. Canonical’s workflow is to flash the image to the SD or microSD card, then insert it into the board.
  5. Boot and administer the server installation. Expect a text-based system. A graphical interface is not installed by the RISC-V server image itself.
  6. Check the release’s ISA requirement before troubleshooting boot failures. A board can be physically compatible with RISC-V while still missing the instruction-set profile required by a newer Ubuntu release.

Because the official instructions are board-specific, there is no single capacity, speed rating or boot procedure that can be stated for every RISC-V board. Use the requirements attached to the exact image you selected.

Release and ISA requirements

RISC-V support is also tied to an ISA profile. The profile requirement is separate from whether an image is labeled server or desktop.

Release guidance Hardware profile noted by Ubuntu What it means
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Requires RVA23S64-ready hardware Boards without RVA23 support are not the target for this release’s Canonical download guidance.
Ubuntu 25.10 Targets RVA23S64 The release notes identify RVA23S64 as the target profile.
Ubuntu 24.04.5 LTS Continues support for hardware that is not RVA23-ready Older RVA20 hardware remains supported by 24.04 LTS according to the published guidance.

The 26.04 requirement appears on Canonical’s current RISC-V download page. The 25.10 profile guidance is also documented in Ubuntu’s 25.10 release notes. If a newer image fails before installation, verify the board’s ISA profile rather than assuming the problem is the SD card or desktop support.

Can you add a graphical desktop yourself?

The official documentation establishes only that the RISC-V server installer does not install a GUI. It does not say that adding desktop packages later is impossible. Those are different claims.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A manual desktop setup would be a separate configuration project. Before attempting it, confirm all of the following for your board:

  • A desktop environment and display server are available for the release and architecture.
  • The board has a supported graphics device and driver.
  • The kernel and firmware expose the display, USB and input hardware correctly.
  • Your chosen image supports the board’s boot and storage arrangement.
  • The board has enough memory, storage and cooling for the software you intend to run.

None of those conditions is guaranteed merely because an Ubuntu RISC-V server image boots. In particular, Canonical’s documented headless FML13V01 images lack GPU and Wi-Fi support, so they are not presented as desktop-ready hardware.

What is included—and what is not

Included in the official Canonical-built choices

  • Board-specific Ubuntu images for supported RISC-V platforms.
  • Server preinstalled images and, for applicable configurations, Server live installers.
  • Instructions to write an image to SD or microSD and boot the board.
  • Release guidance that identifies the required RISC-V ISA profile for newer versions.

Not included in the listed RISC-V desktop downloads

  • A Canonical-listed RISC-V desktop ISO on the 24.04.5 or 25.10 release pages.
  • A graphical user interface in the RISC-V server install image.
  • A universal image that covers every RISC-V board and storage method.
  • A promise of GPU, Wi-Fi or other peripheral support on every platform.

The ARM64 desktop ISO shown on the release pages is not a substitute for a RISC-V image. ARM64 and RISC-V are different architectures; writing an ARM64 desktop ISO to a RISC-V board will not turn it into a supported RISC-V desktop installation.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Fix: Check the architecture label. On the 24.04.5 and 25.10 listings, the desktop ISO is ARM64, while the RISC-V entries are server images.

Expecting a graphical login after flashing the server image

Symptom: The board boots to a console or remote shell instead of a desktop.

Fix: That is the documented behavior of the RISC-V server install image. Confirm that you selected the intended image type and then consult board-specific documentation before considering any manual GUI installation.

Using an image for the wrong board or storage target

Symptom: The board does not boot, or installation cannot see eMMC/NVMe storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: Return to the exact board entry. Canonical’s instructions distinguish SD/microSD flashing from configurations where a Server live installer is advised for eMMC or NVMe.

Trying a release that exceeds the board’s ISA profile

Symptom: A newer release fails at an early boot or compatibility check.

Fix: Compare the board with the release requirement. Ubuntu 26.04 LTS specifies RVA23S64-ready hardware, while Ubuntu’s guidance keeps non-RVA23 hardware supported on 24.04 LTS.

How to evaluate a “desktop” claim from a board vendor

Canonical’s page distinguishes Canonical-built downloads from partner-built images. If a vendor advertises a RISC-V desktop image, check what that label means before treating it as equivalent to an official Ubuntu desktop ISO:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Is the image a complete graphical operating system or a server base with a desktop package added?
  • Which exact board revision and boot medium does it support?
  • Are GPU acceleration, display output, Wi-Fi and audio documented?
  • Which Ubuntu release and RISC-V ISA profile does it require?
  • Does the vendor provide updates and recovery instructions?

A partner image may be useful, but its contents and support obligations must be verified separately from Canonical’s listed server images.

Bottom line for buyers and installers

If you need an official Canonical download today, plan on a RISC-V server installation, not a ready-made desktop image. The server installer will not install a GUI, and the release pages checked list the desktop ISO for ARM64 instead. Choose by exact board, storage method and ISA profile; then treat any graphical desktop as a board-specific project or a separately supported vendor image, not as a feature included in the standard RISC-V download.
